A precis of the article, please...

  • Essentially details our history associated with universities, big business and accountants (so not blue collar).
  • Details Glen Bartlett's choice to move here for work even though he played in WA
  • Poor drafting choices, contrasts Cale Morton to Lachie Henderson
  • Questions drafting both May and Lever, as they are allegedly similar types
  • Wonders about the influence or lack thereof of  Richardson on game style
  • States that everyone knows that the sweat on the gym floor at Aami Park is Melbourne Storm and not the players - ie: don't work hard enough
  • 3 A graders - Gawn, Petracca (when he works hard enough) and Oliver
  • Can't spread
  • Our bodies are not big enough to compete with the best.

post script. I'm neither here nor there on Malthouse or anyone commenting on any team. This is such a superficial sense making article, a grab bag of quotes and anecdotes (see comment re: Melbourne Storm) which I believe was from around 5-10 years ago. But it is of course the Herald Sun.

Many thanks EG.

Most points are rubbish or ancient history.  I've highlighted the ones that imv have validity.

Malthouse doesn't like nor respect us.  Nonetheless he was the only commentator that predicted we wouldn't make finals and crash badly in 2019.  Whatever drove that prediction he has a better grasp on what it takes to be a premiership contender than many of us care to admit.

Would love to make and have some success in finals this year, just to prove him wrong.

Thanks.

He hasn't said anything we don't already know.

Bit tough on the work rate jibe?

My favourite part is he mentions Salem as one of 4 quality players we have. Then says we traded the pick Kelly went for for Dom Tyson but no mention of Salem. The article cant decide whether it wants to trash our lack of culture, historical recruiting and trading or the coach and game plan. So why not a little bit from all three columns :)

The only thing I think we have wasted again is a realistic oppertunity to finish top 4.  Losses to Geelong, the Lions in particular and to some extent Richmond were games that I think we could look back on and rue as winnable games we let slip.  Our slow starts to seasons are killing our best opportunities to win flags.

As I see it, we have still got a good oppertunity to just make finals from here, if we continue build our form and start to beat teams above us like Collingwood, Bulldogs, Essendon, GWS and St Kilda that I think we are more than capable of.  If we keep our list healthier than everyone else, maybe we stand a better than average chance of winning a flag from outside the top four.  As much as anything though, realistically I'm looking at making finals as an oppertunity to test our team and game plan against good opposition to set-up a genuine crack for next season.  I wouldn't call that a wasted season.

Beyond all else, how can Mick call it a wasted season when it isn't finished yet?  A lot could play out from here.  It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Compare Malthouses article which is little more than " I have to submit a story or I won't get paid" To Jordan Lewis's article which hits the head on the nail.

Hit's the head on the nail. Interesting, painful but an unusual take on an old saying. Might even catch on.

Just a dumb article.

One sentence reads "In 2009 they took Tom Scully at 1 and Jack Trengove at 2. Nat Fyfe went at 20"

That alone shows you how lazy and ill informed the article is.

Interesting...I remember Malthouse commentating on radio.

I think it was a Friday night game at the 'G' and Scully had a purple patch in the final Q in his first season or was it 2nd, anyway...

Malthouse was asked about Scully.

"One word, Judd' said Malthouse.

I wonder if he thought we got the pick wrong then????

It’s a strange article. My big takeaway is that Mick doesn’t bother to do any recent research. Why are we still talking about Cale Morton and Grimes in 2020? Did we fluff the development of Darren Cuthbertson in 1992 as well Mick?

It’s ok Grandad. I’ll get you some milk.

Malthouse is still frothing at the gills for us beating and replacing his Footscray for the last finals spot in 1987 on their home turf. I remember the look on his face after the game. He couldn’t believe they lost.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
