Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Exit interviews 2023

If you were doing the exit interviews, what would be a key message that you would want delivered to a particular player? Where would you want them to focus in the off season to improve?

Verall: More Fitness and marking, getting to contests to be improved

Jefferson: More muscle mass and hit more contests.

Howes:  More fitness and strength to challenge for a wing spot in 24

(etc)

Then there are ones like “enjoy your retirement” to BBB, TMAc, Hibbo, Melk, etc, and ‘enjoy the Harbour views, Grundy”

What messages would you give?

The Grundy issue is totally on us. We thought we could magic him into Luke Jackson 2.0 and it didn’t work.

But it was also obvious that Gawn and Jackson were never a ruck/forward powerhouse. I think they kicked only 6 goals collectively in the latter half of 2022. I just don’t understand why we thought Grundy could be an improvement on that or why we were hellbent on replicating that dynamic.

As we all know, we were actually crying out for a competent key forward. But they don’t grow on trees, and who knows, if we had got one, we may not have had the opportunity to see what Petty was capable of.

Max unfortunately is a lone ruckman but on the downside he struggles against players that jump into him early instead of the body type contact players so in the end it was who do you go with I will say Grundy is a better tap ruckman than Max.

Ross Lyon in an interview spoke about exit interviews last week. He said players get so much consistent feedback that none of them would ever be in doubt about what they need to work on, and the expectations of them.

He said these days exit interviews are more about finding out from the players how they are feeling and think their year went, checking off procedural and governance things, and then confirming with those you suspect are out the door that they in fact are.

Most of us embraced the experiment but I cannot fathom why we excluded Grundy when neither could kick goals, surely that could have been worked a hell of a lot better. Ego’s or no ego’s.!!

I think a quiet conversation with Goodwin over a soothing cup of tea to just reflect on the way that as accumulating injuries and bad form wrecked our forward line he turned more and more to the emotionally comforting option rather than the ruthless call. He turned to his personally loved and trusted players and while it worked a treat with Melksham, once that option was cruelly taken away he never should have even looked in McDonald's direction.

It was decision-making under really terrible stress and very few could have done better. Just this season one champion coach 'retired' under stress and another took three months off due to basically a stress-related breakdown. It's easy to see how that can happen when our own coach has watched things get worse and worse on a near weekly basis.

So, I'd schedule a lot of calm reflection and care for Goodwin and coax a reset on the old mantra of controlling the things we can control.

People still think footy clubs are amateur. It's a professional work place. Players have KPIs. Teams have KPIs. Coaches have KPIs. Exit interviews are holistic views over the year. Anyone that works corporate would know what an end of year review is. You go in, talk about what you've done well, how you think you went, what you think you can improve on. Then management tells you how you went next to your KPIs and what your goals might be next year. Anyone with a brain going into these interviews knows exactly how they're going to go. They're not defined by one moment/game/week/month.

Leaders like Gawn will have different metrics than someone like JVR.

Isn't innovation a curious thing? I've just caught wind of a shiny new thread where fans can give their unfiltered opinions on player performance. A platform for fans to share insights?  I bet you've never seen anything like it, especially not every week, during every game, and every hour on Demonland.🫠

Sorry @buck_nekkid, I'm in a foul mood.

Good on you for starting the thread.

Maybe someone should start a thread about trading James Jordon… for whom we should trade him for… how much he is WORTH in a TRADE. You know, simple thread about the simple concept of trading an OUT OF CONTRACT, UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT

Maybe jump.out from behind the door dressed as a toothless Collingwood supporter?

AS stated earlier the clubs are completely professionals with regular advice with KPI's. When given end of year assessment there should be no surprise sackings or exits. Organisations just don't do that. Most of the input should come from the player re their thoughts on their achievements and what they hope to address and improve.

Out of contract players who haven't been made an offer would be concerned and injured players would have a fare idea if they can go on.

For all we know Grund may have already left the building emotionally and that is why he wasn't selected. BBB may not physically be able to continue, heck we have no surety that Petty will overcome a serious foot injury. I hope that the players have self assessed themselves and know what they want moving forward.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
