Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Should Gawn have played the percentages and tried to force a draw?

Recommended Posts

We had a much better chance of forcing a draw or chance of snatching the win with a fluke goal and maintained our top position if Gawn tried to punch the ball towards the goals.Too often I bemoan the lack of creative ruck play from Max as well as strategic thinking. He could have got 2 players to position goal side and thump the ball in that direction. We had little chance of him 3 times dropping the ball non goal side at his feet in manic congestion to win a decisive clearance for a shot at goal. Quick thinking and basic math nous could have saved us. A draw would have been as good as a win.

I wish gawn disposed of the ball quicker & didn't get caught holding the ball leading to the winning goal.

I wish the boys stuck to the structures in the last 5 minutes.

I thought why not just boot it off the ground as far as possible and he was stuck manning the mark too which didn’t help.
Just a few little things let us down, weren’t playing good but we led that game for 85 minutes out of 115.

On the thump and towards the goal, I wanted him to go towards any score. Just wondering how hard is it to do from a stand and jump as opposed to a run-up late in a game.

When defending ruckmen were allowed to rush behinds from ball ups close to goal they used to do it all the time. It was relatively easy. That’s why they changed the rules.

Gawn's been less than impressive in a whole bunch of areas for four weeks in a row.

As a captain, he needs to make less unforced errors, missed marks and spoiling his own team mates and become more physical at stoppage.

Needs a massive game on Friday night to win me back.

He's been extremely underwhelming imo for a few weeks. Some his tap work has been shocking. Get going Max.

In fairness I think he was playing the percentages.  They were still 15-20m out in the last few plays.  If he swipes and it lands in an Adelaide players hands and they clear it then it’s came over.  Damned if you do, damned if you don’t

Needs a big game to win you back? Are you kidding? The bloke has been enormous for years now and you want to bring him down for s few average weeks?
I think you need a lie down buddy.

Win me back this month, yes.

Yeh he's been immense. But he's in a form slump at the minute and if we are to challenge the best, (dogs and Brissy) we need him playing top tier footy.

The best bring the same level most weeks. Gawn has been average for a month. If we're challenging this year, he needs to be playing consistently high level footy most weeks.

And he's not presently.

No. This is a team that I want to play to win not eek out a draw. If you think that would have been the best play to create a goal opportunity then I agree.

This is a team that wants to win.
I doubt the thought even entered their minds.
Gotta go for the goal.
Thumping it over the goal line is for when the scores are level and you want to eek out a win.

I’m sure Max would want to lift - he even said in his podcast that he has been having a dip in form.

Oddly enough he attributed maturity to not going up for marks that he competes for with Lever/TMac etc.

I think he needs to listen to his own advice. He also has been ball watching in contests in the middle.

There are 100 micro decisions that players made yesterday that if different would have potentially changed the result. Max’s decisions rank about 80 on the list.

Top 50 but agree with your thinking.  If … if … and if … x100 after last nights game.

He’s an A-Grader with B-Grade output at the moment.

I think your point on his physicality is spot on. He’s a huge man but lacks a bit of presence at the moment. Could be injury or a little bit of indecision/lack of confidence.

He’ll get back to his normal output soon I am sure.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the
