Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

  • Simon Goodwin: "You just try and work through (form slumps) methodically and keep people believing in the process and understanding you can work your way through it. Deep down you're thinking 'this is going to be hard' but internally you just want to get on the board."

  • Simon Goodwin on Luke Jackson: "We see him as a guy who can play forward and we see him as the first player who could potentially plays in the midfield at 200cm. He's just such a talent and a unique type of player for our game. It's too big of an opportunity to look past."
  • Simon Goodwin on Harley Bennell: "We're really excited about Harley, he's certainly trying to turn his life around. He's 27 and he's still got a love of the game, he's emotional about where his footy has been and where he wants it to get too and he doesn't want to waste it."
  • How further advanced are Melbourne compared to this time last year? Goodwin: "We've got nearly a full playing group out there training to a real high level which is completely different to this time last year. We didn't even have our players back right now (last year)."
  • Goodwin on the potential of player challenging score reviews: "I think it's healthy and there's a lot of sports around the world where you can challenge umpires on a range of decisions. I think it's a good initiative and the players will welcome that."

Imagining a centre bounce with Gawn, Jackson, Tomlinson and Oliver. Mightn't be very effective but would tower over any other midfield

Maybe just add in Pickett to bring the height average down and add an element of a player that wants to hit players hard

The new center bounce game plan revolves around spiking the ball forward, volleyball style, until we get a player in the clear to have a shot on goal. instead of the average disposals per score of around 30 (not sure of the source), we're going to bring it down to less than 5, and really blow score sheets apart!

That is inexcusable on so many levels.

This is what I find really hard to accept. We had enough experienced people at the club who repeatedly spoke about not getting carried away with a Prelim - they know there was work to be done. Goodwin even flagged it multiple times re the Hawthorn final and then inexplicably chose to not to sit down with the team and review the Prelim (his own words).

Richmond made the prelim under Frawley and didn't see finals for another 12 years. We aren't that team but I hope like hell Goodwin has looked inside himself to unlock the issues - even if he doesn't explain them publicly.

Re the draft they have gone bold which I don't mind. Jackson has plenty of upside and Pickett could be the most exciting player since Jurrah - x-factor we have been missing.

Lets go 2020.

I assume he is trying to say - we couldn’t prepare for what the season was going to demand due to many factors out of our control

Should a game style be identifiable (at least to those on the outside)?

The successes we had in 2018 were in great part due to chaos and unpredictability.

If our plan is too identifiable then it is more easily countered.

I was pretty disappointed with the club this year like everyone, the coaches, the players the admin, it was just a very poor year full of amateur mistakes, wrong messaging, underwhelming leadership and quite frankly a rather sickening response to a poor exit coming off a good year.

So i applaud the changes, the desire to make amends and the fact we have not sat on our hands and just expected we will bounce back. Goodwin is a relatively young coach, and all coaches face challenges, he did this year and im sure he will have learnt a lot, Richo will be a great addition to teh club. The Recruiters have identified areas where we could be better and gone and got players, Jury is out on Jackson for me, but i will embrace it, i love teh selection of Pickett, its a need we have.

Im now prepared to let the last 12 months go and throw my full support behind the club. The past is behind us and the future in front of us. Go Dees.

Did you get to the interview stage in the selection process?

Thank you.

For the dopes (and they are numerous) - Goodwin was referencing the operations and the fact that the entire midfield group had delayed/badly interrupted preseasons where they could barely do contesteted work before January (some February).

Exactly. Something the Eeyore brigade would not consider before potting everyone in the club, and other supporters.

Great Post D3.

The summary of impacts of injuries etc after 2018 on 2019 at the recent forum was also illuminating and puts the 2019 in some sort of context. Josh Mahoney's stat of only 2 starting 22 player, (Gawn and Lewis completed 80% plus of preseason), whilst 10 best starting 22 completed 30% or less spoke volumes IMO.

nevertheless no excuses now for 2020 with whats going on at present training and recruiting - wise.

Likewise - Go Dees

He didn't mean it from a 'how we prepared as a club perspective, we were blindsided due to strategy/tactics etc' - it was a reference to the context of where the playing group was at from a rehab perspective.

*apologies, my rage, didn't see that 48 other posters had written essentially the same thing...

My interest is his thinking of Jackson as a midfielder. There was lots os speculation when the Dogs went early with Bontempelli a 193 cm mid. It was a calculated risk which has paid off handsomely. From the limited highlights Jackson may well go the same way. Seriously athletic and hunts the ball.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
