The answer to this is to corral, as opposed to tackle. Hopefully he continues to work on his kicking as well, which after his VFL stint he seems to be

Trouble with corralling him is that he can also laser a 20 metre handball to a running player. His hands are absolutely elite. I know that they want him to kick more and that lovely kick out of the middle to Brayshaw who goaled was great - but it is sometimes hard to kick when in the heat and like Greg Williams, if you can release a player with a handball from congestion rather than slamming the ball onto your boot and it going anywhere - I vote for handball. ( the disclaimer being you have to be very good with your handball decisions and Oliver is)

It's actually like he is performing a magic trick.

I know.  He's having his arm scragged, and he turns where you can no longer see, turns back and he somehow has the ball and both arms free.  I remember thinking at the time, "I have no idea how he managed to dispose of that legally".

Sort of surprised that the maggots, given their lack of understanding of the game, didn't think the same - "no way a mere mortal could do that so must have been a throw"

His handball technique will be scrutinised in the same way Dustin Martin's fend off is scrutinised.

You can try and copy it but not many have got Dustin's fend off ability and Oliver has shown in his short time that his handball technique is just natural. He continually lifts his body and his arms high above the tackle and handballs at eye level as he is drawing tackle(s). Not only does he get away precision handballs but because he is being tackled by one, sometimes two players, he takes the tacklers out of the play.

His handball in front of the old bay 13 as he was airborne heading out of bounds was amazing as well. Hit Viney perfectly and started  a chain that resulted in a goal. Commentators couldn't believe that he  had kept it in play.

Was reading on the AFL site talking about Riolis hit on Oliver

Rioli is a chance to be cleared after a fumble from Oliver left the two-time All Australian with no alternative but to hold his ground and brace for a collision.

What an absolute crock of shite. 2 points worth noting here. 1. Lets remember what a good bloke he is by reminding everyone he's a two time all Austrailna. and 2. if thats "bracing for impact" then lord help anyone if he decides to go the bump. Im getting sick of the love affair with this dude. As someone on this site said imagine if it had been the other way around. Oliver would have been penalised and reported on the spot.

Fair enough!! but I reckon Clarry's in and under is more dynamic and clearance breaking than Brayshaws!

Pathetic reporting! Did this gimp even watch the incident?

Pathetic. Hopefully they start losing more and the love affair ends soon. They get a seriously good run with the umpires and media. It's sickening. Sam Mitchell is possibly the dirtiest cheat to have played the game in my lifetime. Such a soft c*ck!

Great gif.

No doubt about it, he's a complete gun. Was amazed at the stats in the casey game last week. 33 disposals, of which 22 were contested!

What i love about his handball - and the above is a terrific example - is he sizes up the options and makes great choices. So many players in that situaltion would have flicked it out as soon as he gets he but Oliver didn't panic and allowed himself to be turned all trge way around before giving it to Stretch.

I suspect if there was not a good handball option he would have held onto it and allowed himself to get taken to ground rather than lose control of the ball in a dangerous area as so many players would have done.

By the by it was also brilliant play by stretch. He is really coming along

The Mitchell one was behind play so the umpires can be forgiven for not actually seeing it ( did i just say that ?)

The Rioli fine is wrong IMO or they have changed the rules for a bump to the body. If it was head - a free kick and weeks - but the MRP deemed it body  - play on is fine.

The Sicily decision  - the umpire called play on for a spoil - we laughed ( bitterly ) at the time - why did the umpire need to make any call for a spoil at all ? The spoil that was right across Bernies face splattering his nose - borders baffling and incompetent.

"careless conduct with low impact to the head"

This is what they deemed Rioli's actions. Careless? Is that a new way of saying deliberate? If that was deemed deliberate, he'd have gotten banned. I remember when they used to say if they leave the ground then it's weeks for sure. Guess that's not the case any more. Just because Oliver is tough enough to get up and keep going, Rioli gets a lighter punishment. It's BS.

Also, had a Hawthorn mad workmate ask if i was going to gloat today after the result on the weekend. I said i was better than that. He then went on about how awesome Rioli's bump was and how Oliver fell like a bag of s4!t. I replied that the best part of that unsuspecting shirtfront, was that Oliver (the just turned 19 year old) got back up and lead both teams in clearances and was second overall in tackles. The deflated look on his face was priceless.

I don't easily become fans of individual players, even though there are obviously some I admire. But watching Oliver around a contest, there is something about him that satisfies an old purist's heart. It is more than class  - it is the kind of football that thrives in any era. Skilton, Ian Stewart, Robbie Flower, but also lesser lights like Brett Lovett, Ian Fairley from the Roos, Bartel. At a contest, my eyes are drawn to him because he is such  a natural footballer.

I read somewhere that the MRP deemed it to the head, but low impact.  Regardless they had to tailor it to keep the darling on the field.

Bernie may like to chat to Pedo about that, though Pedo's assailant didn't even get cited as I recall.

Don't know if this has been posted before but oh well, high praise from the Captain.....

Jones said Oliver was “as tough as I’ve seen a kid come into the game”.

“Cyril’s not one you want to run into and probably that hit [on Oliver in the first quarter] – I was pretty close by – was the most flush I’ve seen someone get nailed before,” he said.

“To Clarry’s (Oliver) credit, he got back up and he actually got into Cyril [Rioli] later in the game.

“That shows he’s willing to dish it out, but can also take it, so it’s a promising sign for us. These promising young players that are coming through, they’re made of the right stuff...."

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
