POSTGAME: Rd 20 vs Richmond

A great game of footy. Richmond are a good team.

Some thoughts:

Our Mister Jones is a very boring commentator. I also got annoyed when he said there was nothing in it' when 3 Richmond players manhandled Gawn as JVR was about to take his kick - the last bump in particular was totally unnecessary..

Richmond played with more aggression than Melbourne.

I think our weak links at the moment are Jordon, Woewodin, amd Harmes. Woewodin will improve, but the other two are limited.

Tomlinson was a liability on the day. Surely Smith is the man.

Pickett's first quarter when he started in the centre was great. The bottom line is that when Melbourne play as well down the corridors as they did yesterday, players like Chandler and Pickett, out on the edge of the paddock, can't be so effective because the ball is always flying over them.

Salem, McVee and Bowey and Rivers are such good defenders.

Brayshaw was great.

Landon and Hunter have been two great acquisitions.

Bring on Clayton O.

Great games from Lever and May.

Isn't Dusty a great footballer?

I had two lovely normal well spoken Richmond fans in front of me, who left 10 minutes early to catch a train to Bendigo and wished us luck for the rest of the season on the way out.
I nearly fainted.

10/10 behavior from them. They were gracious and really nice!

Likewise the Richmond supporters around me were all good. Put it down to good luck. Made me almost feel bad when I yelled out ‘Dusty you’re a big sook’ when he questioned an umpire’s decision. Ah well, that’s life.

At one stage they were 7 frees to 2 and we got a free kick and the Tiger's supporter near me (with face tatts mind you) was carrying on like a European Soccer player who barely got clipped yelling that the umps have been giving us freebees all blinking day. I didn't have the heart to correct him. He didn't seem to be the kind of guy who likes to be informed that he is wrong by someone with immaculate dental hygiene.

Who were you sitting with?

Can someone please explain why we have let in 100 points three weeks in a row? It’s a concern that our rock defensive has gone to sleep. Not sure I’d be wanting to take in a shootout game plan into finals.

We have played more aggressively in the past 3 weeks against sides that are offensively v good.

Carlton and Coll we played a very high press to hold the ball in. The last 3 weeks we haven't pushed up as high.

Teams that move the ball by hand and overlap running work their way through our midfield. If you kick the ball long and high v melb you will lose. So teams try low and dirty balls as our ground ball gets in defence aren't the best.

Most goals yesterday were from stoppage which is highly unusual. Balls coming in fast are hard to defend. Particularly centre bounces

That's my 2 cents worth

It's fine to doubt JD.  I think if we're being honest, most (icluding myself), would say we were not entirely convinced up till yesterday.

The doubting and the doubters....that's part of footy until someone shows something to say otherwise.  A normal part of sport and the game if you like.

And sure, one swallow does not a summer make.  Plenty of work ahead.  But we now know what he's capable of.  And against a solid opposition defence too.

It's the ones that said he will NEVER EVER be a forward and should only be played as a defender that are under scrutiny here.

Let's not confuse the two pls.

That is also part of sport...no one is perfect and we alll get calls wrong at times.

But they are also allowed to be called out for it... there's no rule that says "Leave the critics alone!"

Petty has a dual role. He is a great mark and defender.  So he played defensive fwd on Boltaand gave us a target. He is a natural kick.

Very capable of kicking 3 and 4 on a regular basis and gives cover to JVR

From memory, Tomlinson got dropped while in-form and playing a blinder. That to me tells me he gave up on the idea, as Tomlinson should never have been dropped in the first place. But, we all see it differently and thats OK :-)

Tomlinson got dropped because he was incapable of playing on Jeremy Cameron and not trusted to play on Hawkins.

He was good for a half against Adelaide before being smashed in the second half. He was terrible yesterday.

He will now very likely be dropped again for Hibberd or Joel Smith.

I think a lot of his good stuff goes under the radar as its a lot of running off the ball, pressure work, in close contested work whereas his bad stuff is glaring so it sticks out ie turnovers. He had a couple of turnovers early in the game which would have set most people's view for the rest of the game.

Yet everyone turned a blind eye to Max’s blunders that contributed to Richmond’s first three goals… selective blindness I suspect 😉

We had centre bounces yesterday when Viney was resting and Tracc forward with Gus, JJ and Harmes. Arguably without our 4 first choice mids in Oliver, Tracc, Viney and Sparrow and with Max getting jumped over and in to by Soldo in the first half.

And going against Taranto, Prestia, Hopper, Bolton, Cotchin and Dusty which might be the leagues most expensive midfield.

I’d love to know if it was a coaches call or Max’s call to take it out of the ruck because it was the match winning move.

Tomlinson wasn’t great but he wasn’t terrible and he will only get picked when the matchups make sense.  Maybe Port and Pies. With May also struggling with mobility we can’t play both unless matchups allow.

Richmond went small forward and Smith should have been picked from the start. Tomlinson rotated between Miller when on and Riewoldt when Miller was off.  Miller was totally ineffective and got subbed for a small.  Tomlinson got subbed shortly after Miller as we were too slow with the Richmond matchups.

Petty played a very good game yesterday, I liked that he seemed to be getting under the skin of the defenders. IMO a bit of agro is necessary in a KPF.

I understand thanks Jnr.

I did mention pre the official team announcement that Goody & the SC would probably go with Petty forward for the defensive role on Bolta.  Bolta the No.1 intercept marking defender prior to this match.

Here I am on Monday morning the last of July, the sun is shinning, the Dees have won by 5 + goals against the Tigers in their GF and the world seems wonderful. For the first in the season our team setup looks capable of winning the flag in 2023. We have put two games and percentage between us and fifth. Who knows with a little luck we could finish second. Of the three above us Port are the only team we have not beaten and that was a close run game. Look out here come the Demons! .

Who are you and what have you done with the real Old Dee.

Generally that will be Max making that decision mid contest, depending on how he's bodied his opponent and opened up the drop zone of the ball.

He is, but we are also a tall forward short.

See how many intercept marks Richmond got today in our forward line.

Keep Tomlinson back, drop Harmes/Woewodin/Jordon and move Smith forward.

I agree with your thinking CB. Limiting Smith's contribution to so late in the game nearly every week leaves missed opportunities. Smith Petty and JVR makes a strong marking forward line and its where we have been weak all year. Smith is also good at ground level and competes solidly despite the odd mistake.

He can always be switched into emergency replacement roles when another sub comes on if we need it. He is too valuable a contributor to leave out. of so much game time.

He needs match time before the finals..but leave Tomlinson in the 22. He has a great first half week before last and was our best defender when Lever and May were struggling. I don't think he was responsible for much of what went on in Richmond's forward line yesterday- the way the ball came in he was not able to do much. Having said that, he played much better in previous weeks.

Ok what did I know. I didn't want Petty back. Thought he'd be unreliable and probbaly get injured again.

What I enjoyed yesterday was his leading, he always tried to create an option. He isn't your high flyer, leave that to Van Rooyen, but he was leading and moving and that's what we needed.

I really hope he can keep this going.

Also just want to give a shout out to Jack Viney. The man is a beast. Just loving his season and about time he got some credit and recognition from the media which I read today.

Waddagame.  Something symbolic in watching the last dominant team in Footy (the toiges) being overcome in the last by what could be the latest dominant team.

3 forwards kicking 14 goals between them, without Fritch.

No Clarry, Grundy, Spargs or Hibbo.

There are so many options with this team, so many ways in which they can win. Everyone knows the system, whatever it may be that week, and plays to it.

Then there are the champion players, I've been saying for a while that Clarry may be the best Melbourne player I've seen, but Max is giving it a nudge.

Viney has been a phenom this Season.

Still, I'd trade all the All Australian accolades and big bags to see us win a flag live.

Just watched the replay. Probably mentioned already, what a brilliant decision by the ump to pay holding the ball against Broad. At no stage did Kozzie get him high even with Broad lifting the arm.

Not sure why you named Spargo, Hibberd and Grundy as significant outs.

They're not even best 22.

Clarry and Fritsch are the only significant outs that we should worry about.

To win some big games without these two has been unreal.

Have just started watching the replay and the cameras panned to Dipper in the crowd who was with former Crystal Palace, Arsenal & England forward, Ian Wright. Commentators mentioned Dipper but were oblivious to Wrighty 🤦🏻‍♂️

It was good to see players lead just not lead to pockets and not all flying for the same mark and having Petty get a chance to get a one one marking situation was good to see but getting 14 goals out of 3 players is handy.  With Oliver, Fritta and Sparrow to come back in it's going to be tight for spots.

As much as we gave up goals easily at times that is an easier fix than getting goals and if Langdon and Hunter can play more inside than out I think that could help even more.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
