Watts is a class player and I find the suggestions of trading him amusing to be honest.

We are not going to get anything as good as jack in return. And his best is clearly in our best 10 players

It's always interesting to read the views of posters regarding selection. Some people have a best 22 in mind and desperately want whoever is in that best 22 named regardless of form. Some have favourites that they see potential in and want them selected (sometimes prematurely). Others use selection as an opportunity to punish often in a short sighted manner. And others have a player or two that they simply don't like (O Mac, Watts, Frost, Bugg, Salem etc . . .) and campaign for their omission.

I think Goodwin and the selection panel have succeeded in balancing the short term need to win games with the medium and long term development needs. Goodwin has also done a good job of not playing favourites. The only chink in the armour was the regular early selection of Melksham but again he seems to have got that one right. I'm really interested to see what happens now that we're within touching distance. Surely he wants Watts and Salem playing in his finals team. Surely he wants to ensure we get there. My guess is that Watts and Salem will both be selected against Collingwood and that Hogan will come straight in. It will be a gamble but one I think we need to take. I'm not sure, however, where Frost stands. He's either straight back this week or maybe out of favour for the rest of the year. Fingers crossed Viney gets up. We're so close to getting our best team on the park. If we do that and Hogan, Salem, Watts, Pertracca and Garlett all find some form then the sky is the limit.

Great post.

Interesting comments about Goody balancing the now and future development. Weed's selection is a perfect example of the latter.

But the rubber is close to hitting the road. But perhaps it hasn't quite hit yet. I said in the changes thread that i think they are 50 50 on dropping Weed for frost this week.  If they keep Weed it will be for development purposes and if so it is a bit of a gamble because it is must win game. The gamble is that if Weed competes well we should still win even if he plays to the level he did last game.

But the rubber definitely hits the road against the Pies and it is for this reason that i agree that Watts and Salem will both come in for that game. Assuming of course Watts does not bother on Saturday. That said they would be pretty annoyed with Salem for getting reported.  Both are best 22 and we want to to win a finals not just make it.

I think Hogan will also come back in for the pies game.

I dont have Jack Watts in my best 22 anymore. I dont believe he can lift to the leves he found earlier on in the year.

But dont mind me, I think Hogan is vastly overrated as well.

Just like Gary Lyon as well!

But seriously the way Pedo is playing and with TMac as another forward option I think his days maybe numbered. He would have to play a blinder to be considered for next week.

Pedo is 30 , I'd rather TMac down back and we don't know what we have with Weed just yet.

Keep Watts for now.

The last time Watts was banished to Casey, he ended up playing (arguably) his best footy once back in the 22. I would like to think Goodwin's motive is just that. Rattle ya dags Wattsy

This whole strategy with watts is absolute [censored]! He was hung out to dry in his first game for the club and continues to be a scapegoat! I find it comical and sad, if not disturbing that he is playing again for the Casey Arctics!

If he is not a better bet NOW than Weeds then if and probably will he requests a trade at years end and he goes and plays in a Premiership team I will be happy for him , but disturbed by the MFC and its inability to get a No 1 Draft pick to develop!

Astonishing Stuff!

If he learns to tackle he will get a game

it's quite simple

Oh, Ok, so tackling now takes over from match winning class?

Yeah got it!

He won't get a game in September if he can't stick a tackle.

I know how much talent he has, saw him play for BGS

But without application, talent won't go far

i hope he plays a blinder, but his tackling and chasing prior to being dropped was truly appaling

Where was that match winning class in his last three games? If you're struggling to impose yourself in the game then at least bust a gut and attempt to get a tackle.

He's at the crossroads for sure, but I can't see the club flipping him for something average.  If a club wants to give us a first rounder so we can package it with ours to get someone like Kelly, then I can see the club doing it.  Otherwise I'd rather have him on the list than see him go for a speculative pick.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
