  1. When I bought my personalised MFC number plates ( 57 MFC)about ten years ago, I didn't know 57 would be so significant. At the time, I chose 57 as it was the third of our hat trick of premierships. 55,56,57. Now, wouldn't it be wonderful if the latest 57 number would be the START of our next hat trick of premierships? Very possible I would think. Anyway, here's hoping. Go Demons!

  2. As a footballer he's a beautifully balanced player who reads the game really well and uses speed off half back to really provide that dash and carry. He's also a great link up player who'll give off a hand ball and then spread hard to the next contest to provide as an extra option. Bit like what Ed Langdon does. Not only is his able to provide dash off half back, but is also able to lock down when needed, so already has good defensive mindset in his game For someone of his height and weight 186cm 71kg I don't think i have seen a more impressive player of his size that is able to take intercept contested marks down back. Has amazing reading of the game and just times himself in going for those intercept marks. It really does remind me of Jake Lever with this part of his game. The way I'm looking at this pick is its pretty much an apprentice role to Michael Hibberd or to release River/Bowey to a future midfield role. Off field he's a really driven kid who comes from a ripper family. Mooroopna boy who i can't speak highly enough.

  3. The club have ramped up several meetings with Murray Bushranger prospect Tom Brown in the past fortnight. This has also included his family being part of the process as welll. In the past week our senior Bushies coach and footy manager have been asked once again for a reference background check on his character and off field behavior's. The feeling we have is that Tom is under serious consideration for our pick now, as they have pretty big wraps on him. My personal opinion is that we have Darcy Wilmot as our number 1 target, followed by Brown if Wilmot does not last to our pick.

  4. This is Chris Doerre’s Phantom Draft Every club, every pick: ESPN's full AFL phantom draft You may call me a cynic but it does help your accuracy to be second, a day after Cal Twomey.

  8. Have you considered the possibility that the omen went the other way? That is, if you'd bought personalised MFC number plates with, say, 48 MFC, we wouldn't have had to wait so long between Premierships? Mind you, a 48 year wait would have meant a Premiership in 2012. Even a good omen wasn't going to help us break the drought that year.

  9. Robbo kicked 419 goals and is fourth on the all time goal kicking list and only 7 behind Garry Lyon. He was the only 24 since 1964 to win a B&F (I think). I didn't see Ross Dillon play but Robbo has a much better CV for Melbourne.

  10. Unfortunately we have too many selfish people here 'hardtack'... Their freedom is so important they think it's ok to infect others. This is not what I would call a civil society or good culture.

  11. So we destroyed the Dogs AND BT. A fair day's work. Who knows what we could have achieved if the AFL hadn't stopped the game after 2 1/2 hours.

  12. Only 1 premiership player since 64'. Might well be behind a few at this stage - certainly not the flashy stuff of Robbo and Jurrah - However by the end of his career reckon young Rivers may be the best of the lot. The kid just gets to the right spots, a ball magnet from half back as a 2nd year player. No sign of 2nd year blues - so much upside to come

  17. cama is a mate of my brothers, started the year about 188cm and has just blasted up, kicked 9 and 6 in seperate school games this year and i guess is just sort of coming to grips with what to do with his newfound size, definition of a project player but has the skills around the ground from his midfield days so would be a good prospect

  18. No - but you can list them as Cat B if no one bids on them in the draft and you nominate them. If you don't nominate them, you cannot put them on a Cat B list.

  20. 1: Dillon: 85 injury-interrupted games in a very ordinary side in which he won regular Victorian selection. 2: Robertson: 228 games, great player but one dimensional, mark but no chase... 3: Jarrah: the complete freakish footballer, but only 36 games... Trent Rivers will be number one by the time he's finished.

  21. I found a bloke on the internet doing his own graphic designs of MFC premiership stuff, and printing them onto clothing. THIS is what I wanted. A simple white tee shirt with this moment on it. P.S. I cut my head out of the image to ensure I didn't frighten any Demonland juniors!

  22. Caught up with a Dad at my boy’s first cricket match this morning. His 15yo footy mad Tiger son was in a boxing gym last week for fitness not really knowing what he was doing and throwing haymakers at the bag. It wasn’t a staff member, but another gym user saw him struggling and came over without prompting to give him advice for a few minutes. The kid didn’t need an introduction, he knew it was Jack Viney and couldn’t believe his luck. Class act Jack, great to hear!

  23. Thanks Dazzle. Think you’re spot on re: Wilmot, seems like a few clubs have rounded on him as the preference in that range, he could well be the target of clubs seeking to trade up the order a touch. He qualifies for the draft by a single day, so a heap of potential for growth.

  24. I find this interesting also. Their was a article on a guy in the Age saying he was happy to have a Flu vaccine but not Covid. Really makes no sense to me. The Flu vaccine is different each year, new strains identified and added each year, it does not go through stringent clinical trials before release and yet people are OK with this but won't take the covid vaccine??

  25. Starting to see reports from around the World that the booster take up is substantially less than the original vax rate. For example in Malaysia 40% of people eligible for boosters haven't turned up. The human race never ceases to amaze me with its stupidity. https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2021/11/747859/govt-has-booster-shot-plan-b

  28. Another rant. Again prefaced with happy to support the club financially and understand that some of these delays are out of their control. I preordered the Pictorial Book of the Grand Final on the 3/10. It was the only item in the order so there are no other items holding it up. As far as I'm aware it has not shipped as I have not received a notification like I have with some other items so it's not stuck in transit with Australia Post. I purchased the same book for my dad on 11/11 over a month after mine and he received it today. He received shipping notification either the same day of the order or the next day. Again not blaming the club. Just venting my frustration.

  30. Fritsch's biggest strength is his ability to play on the opposition's intercept defenders and make them accountable. We've seen that a good defender (especially talls) can keep him out of the game if they stick to their defensive task (because he's undersized and only a mediocre athlete) but you simply can't cheat off him to help out your team mates because he's so great at finding the space a turning that into a score. He's especially good at being threat from the goalsquare, which takes these offensively minded talls/mediums out of their comfort zone and anxious to get up the ground to help team mates. He makes good decisions about his positioning that force his opponent to gamble. The intercept game is so important in modern defences and his role is useful to breaking that down.

  31. Ross Dillon had a Schwarz like career .After his first game against Richmond he was touted as being a future super star .But he did the knee soon thereafter and although he became a valuable player on his return he was never quite the same both here or in SA .As good a judge of the flight of the ball as you will ever seer

  33. excellent summary. I'd describe a lot of his grand final as 'blink and you will miss it', and only on a second viewing do you see when the ball was up for grabs, he was as influential as anyone. It was well set up by the end of the season as we used the athleticism of Clarry and Petracca break away. Like the forward line it clicked at the right time. Agree with an earlier call he was top 5 across the finals series after being our best in 2018. So I don't know why people bother to bag him when he returns from injury and doesn't dominate.

  35. Cal > Knightmare. Knightmare spent 2 years bleeting that Melbourne made a big mistake not drafting Tom Green in ‘19 (simply because he didn’t rate Jackson as highly as others did). Appears to have quietened on that front since The Grand Final. edit: he also failed to acknowledge the fact that Melbourne couldn’t have landed Green even if they wanted to

  37. Not to mention the fact that it also reduces the risk of passing on influenza and other airborne illnesses; the things that have an enormous impact of productivity by loss of man hours, over many many years. People have been wearing masks as a common courtesy in Asian countries for many decades.

  38. Been mentioned a lot already but Clarry's goal might be the single most hype moment in MFC history. The last of 3 goals within the last minute of the 3rd. The visual of watching Jackson, Viney and Clarry stream towards goal unimpeded like a red and blue tidal wave. The pinpoint handball from the future of the club, to the present. The full-speed shot on goal that sails directly over the goal umpire's hat. The slow-mo point from Clarry and the elation of Dogga and Sparrow trying to catch him - what an iconic piece of vision. The burial of 57 years of history, and probably the apex of one of the most dominant periods in any football game. And the cherry on top, the shot of Treloar and English in the centre square looking like they've been slapped across the face with a dead fish, unable to comprehend what the F is happening. What an incredible moment from an incredible game.

  40. That song would be attached to an overall storyline that Goodwin has used all year. The song I'd imagine would be a very small part. Goodwin himself admitted the need to be himself to bring out his strengths as a coach. I get the impression that he made a conscious decision to do it his way so if he did get the flick there'd be no regrets. Coaches do weird things to tick those boxes of ethos, pathos and logos in their storytelling. Beveridge used a kids book in 2016, Salty Dog, to help the players overcome their fears. But I agree with you Skuit. Used in isolation, a song from what is a fairly lame movie wouldn't appeal to 40 guys aged between 18 and 33. Used to provide an emotional overlay to a bigger message and it is a fairly powerful thing.

  41. For followers of rugby, in 2016 Eddie Jones produced a presentation to England players on how we will beat the All Blacks and win the 2019 world cup and trained that game plan for 3 years. Come world cup time they smashed the All Blacks (but lost the final to the Springboks). Goody mentions he shares a mentor with Eddie Jones on this interview.

  44. Interesting when they were speaking about grown men brought to tears, this is me. When I was in the queue to meet the cup yesterday and turned the corner and there it was. When I gave it a hug. Every time I watch the replay (even the third quarter of the prelim). When I hear our coach talk about getting some feedback from champions of different industries on what it takes to back it up and win again. Bang. Bang bang bang. I'm a bloody mess, but a happy one.

  45. In fairness it is always challenging to see and value defensive efforts when watching on tv. But, anyone who says kozzie had a poor game, doesn’t understand his role or value to the team. Kozzy, well and truly did his job, despite what the stats sheet says

  46. lots of great goals in the gf but i would opt for clarries. not because it was the most spectacular or difficult but just because it was absolute perfection and exactly how any team would strife to score. straight from the centre bounce, straight down the centre line and straight through the big sticks, all in seconds efficiency and power ........ perfection

  47. Also along club lines is this article in today’s Melbourne Age:- How your club stands ahead of the 2021 draft MELBOURNE PICKS: 17, 37, 49, 57, 94 KEY DEFENDERS: Steven May, Jake Lever, Adam Tomlinson, Harrison Petty, Joel Smith SMALL/MEDIUM DEFENDERS: Christian Salem, Trent Rivers, Jake Bowey, Michael Hibberd, Jayden Hunt, Deakyn Smith, Daniel Turner MIDFIELDERS: Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver, Jack Viney, Ed Langdon, Angus Brayshaw, James Harmes, Luke Dunstan, Tom Sparrow, James Jordon, Oskar Baker, Fraser Rosman KEY FORWARDS: Ben Brown, Tom McDonald, Sam Weideman, Mitch Brown SMALL/MEDIUM FORWARDS: Bayley Fritsch, Kysaiah Pickett, Charlie Spargo, Alex Neal-Bullen, Bailey Laurie, Jake Melksham, Toby Bedford, Kade Chandler RUCKS: Max Gawn, Luke Jackson, Majak Daw It is an obvious take after a flag triumph, but the premiers could not be more primed for a sustained run at success. Headline midfielders Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver are only 25 and 24 respectively, while there is a mix of young and senior depth. Luke Dunstan provides an experienced back-up option as James Jordon and Tom Sparrow establish themselves. Precocious half-back winger Jake Bowey is yet to lose a game, Kysaiah Pickett is already one of the best pressure forwards in the league and Luke Jackson will be a frightening ruck prospect for the next decade. Winger-forward Blake Howes would offer something different with his height and athleticism, while Campbell Chesser would provide more slingshot and speed off half-back. Sam Butler could come into the Dees’ thinking as an attacking outside player. A key forward is not out of the question given the senior ages of Ben Brown, Tom McDonald and Mitch Brown, and West Australian Jack Williams would be a fine option if he slid into the third round. Melbourne are committed to father-son Taj Woewodin, who may not attract a bid until later in the draft. The son of Brownlow medallist Shane is skilful on both sides of his body and can adapt to multiple roles.

  49. JV is my favourite player. 5s into the game after he crunched MacRae I thought this will be fun today. The last 15 mins in Q3 was an unbelievable team effort, but my view is Viney was key in 4 goals and without him we enter 3Q time probably behind. His contribution hads’t been recognised well enough. 9 minutes before the toe poke he started it all when he crashed the pack on the wing where the ball bounced off his chest and then he got a foot on it where the ball fell to Harmes who delivered to Fritz and 8 minutes before the toe poke at the centre clearance he bullied/pushed Treloar right into Martin creating space for Oliver to swoop in, give to Trac, and get the second in a minute and 30s before the toe poke at the centre clearance he got his foot to a ball that Bont looked about to pick up, then picked it up himself, gave to Tracc, who gave to Clarry, who gave to Sparrow who goaled. Then the toe poke. This all happened with LJ and that isn’t appreciated either. LJ was excellent at getting the ball to his feet where Viney was key. And it happened with Libba in there who usually gets first hands to those balls but Viney beat him to it. My view is Viney had as much to do with that 15 minute burst as anyone, and if you look at it closely his work started it and allowed Tracc, Clarry and others to do their stuff. Yet he was probably credited with only one possession.
