Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

2 weeks in a row sides get done by the Goal Umps

The Adelaide Fiasco is a bloody disgrace to the game called AFL. That two weeks in a row, teams can lose because of serious mistakes by either the goal umpire, or the so-called 'Replay' system, in Adelaide's case costing it engagement in a Finals Series is a catastrophic blight - as though there ain't enough already - on everything the AFL stands for.

And then, for the CEO of this Fantasyland called AFL, to admit a serious mistake had been made and offer no redress to the victim of what can only be called an atrocity, makes me shake my head and ask myself, Why bother following a game which is so loaded with injustice.

Think about it:

A. How often do the E Colli Wobblers play interstate?

B. Ditto Geelong.

C. The irrationality of the Fixtures, rational only from economic points of view.

D. The fact that Fixtures are NOT based on fairness in that the Draw is staggered; in other words, in each season, each team should either play the same team twice, and if that extends the number of games, the gaps between matches, so bloody well be it.

E. The irrationality and inconsistency of the outcome of Match Reviews regarding 'Reportable' offences.

D. The changing of the rules, almost as regular as The Changing of The Guard.

E. The fact that 4 umpires is like having 4 Pontuis Pilates, all with different backgrounds, affiliations, viewpoints and whistle capacity.

D. How a boundary umpire can stand next to a ball blatantly  out of bounds, visible to a whole effing arena apart from the umpire's myopia, and for play to be allowed to continue?

E. How certain teams are allowed to throw the ball instead of 'handpassing' when there are so-called Laws forbidding the practice?

F. How come there is a set of rules which an umpire can either overlook or ignore if and when it suits them? All bloody 4 of them!

I could go on...

..... and don't even mention holding the ball. These days it seems that a player can take the ball, run 10m and then get tackled but if he immediately drops the ball at his feet the umpires let it go, presumably on the basis that it was "knocked out in the tackle". Just rubbish.

Agree with a lot of OP post but what goes around comes around for Adelaide -

Leigh Colbert mark

MFC wrongfully handicapped after thrashing them in 98 Final - AFL later admitted they wronged us.

If the AFL wasn't corupt, we would not have lost last week, and Carlton doubtful of making finals again. Cripps wouldn't have a Brownlow, after the disgraceful effort to give them as much assistance as possible last year in the final round. Collingwood would have to travel to Geelong. Geelong would have their salary cap and entire organisation audited by an independent body. The MRO/Tribunal would be consistent in their rulings regardless of club or status of player. The draft would be uncompromised and the academys a duty of the game not a leg up for who they want (I'm looking at you nthrn states and bulldogs and don't get me started on the rule change for salary dumping AFTER Geelong got to benefit).

And worst of all, I wouldn't be loosing my love of the game!

Just watched a bit of the world cup. Contentious penalty in front of goal.

Ref jogs over to the sideline and reviews and discusses decent high definition footage on a screen with those in the bunker and then makes the correct call after a proper review.

Each team could be given one or two review calls like this each game if required.

E.g both last week and this week. The Melbourne or Adelaide captain could have conferred with their players and then have asked for a review of some sort of footage that didn't look like it was filmed through a 1990s handicam.

It's not that hard AFL. But yeah, they're both inept and corrupt.

Soccer and NRL are coming for ya.

Yes but the review tonight took way too long, should be done inside 60 seconds.

I honestly think the umpires might be straight-up fatigued.

The strain of dealing with 'interpretations' and wave after wave of rule-of-the-week and fluctuating levels of enforcement instructions would burn anyone out.

I think the additional field umpire has also backfired in this regard, because it requires an additional umpire every game to go through that surge of continuous mental and emotional load.

If I were an umpire, I'd be talking about industrial action to demand reasonable working conditions. It is a legally recognised form of workplace harassment to assign tasks to someone without appropriate support or realistic prospect of adequate performance.

A time has to come where the AFL cannot be run in detail by the whims of the marketing department.

I’m struggling with Gil throwing the goal umpire under the bus for a mistake rather than reviewing how the AFL can fix a potential future recurrence by amending the review system (procedures for initiating a review, quality of the review footage) to look after both the teams, the umpires and the paying members/supporters. It’s just lazy management, asleep at the wheel.

Yeah, there's both technology and process improvements that need to be made.

Why is this bloke still there?

This.

It would have been a lot more noble if he apologised for the human error and then addressed the need for changes.

This guy has been hung out to dry now and guess what? We're going to get a lot more reviews in the next few weeks because goal umpires see stuff like this. Who would want to make a bold call?

The only way the AFL changes is to brought to that kicking and screaming... and that will come when someone decides to sue the AFL for a false outcome having cost someone a packet in wagering.

That day will come.

Montagna said on first crack that he'd like to see a review while the play is going similar to Soccer. So if the quick play on kick in is taken they will review and if they need to reverse it they will do so and put time back on the clock.

Mixed feelings about it, I don't actually love this about Soccer but I will say it's usually less likely that they have to do this and bring the play back. More often that not the umpires are right but if this eliminates that 10%, 20%, or whatever % of the ones like this that are tragic then maybe it's something to consider.

I don't believe we should stop the game and prevent the full back from kicking in every time a review is done, that's horrible.

The Adelaide decision was obviously a blunder.

Is there categoric and undeniable proof that the umpire made an incorrect decision in relation to the Petracca goal decision last week?

They have frozen 2 weeks in a row, how much clearer can it be?

They need to put there hand in their pockets and find a 💯 percent correct scoring system.

I disagree with your last sentence. Part of the problem is the AFL's obsession about speeding up the game. If defenders have to wait for the goal umpire's decision for a behind to be confirmed every time (and most will take a millisecond to confirm) before kicking in, what's the problem?

There is also a big difference between the Adelaide decision and the Petracca decision last week. The Adelaide decision was a "howler" - the reason that the review system was introduced in the first place. The Petracca decision was debatable and not the reason why the system was introduced.

  • Demonland changed the title to 2 weeks in a row sides get done by the Goal Umps

So we once again are blaming the a-end of a problem

So goal umpires have to make decisions in completely chaotic situations and we want exact results?  Ludicrous

The goal umpires cannot consistently get into the correct position to adjudicate correctly (for obvious reasons) There's often a mass of bodies where the one goal umpire should be ... how do you fix that?

For a start, there should be 2 goal umpires and maybe even 4 at each end if points scraping in near the behind posts are to be adjudicated correctly

And then backed up by a state of the art camera system, VAR style

Also, the football should have a chip in it so as to see the balls actual path

The AFL are cashed up to their eyeballs so why are we still asking goal umpires to adjudicate in 19th century type conditions.  It's insane

The goal umpire in question should be given a written apology, not sacked

It's pure amateur hour once again

Steven Quartermain implied over the weekend that one of the issues with the ARC system is that the AFL expects the broadcaster to pay for and provide the equipment.

That can’t be right, can it? I was shocked when I read it.

Agree with all of the above.

I'd actually be in favour of each captain being able to call one or two goal line decisions per game. A bit like cricket.

The players would know if it was worth a call.

The umpire in question has almost certainly made similar calls when not in the right position to do so.  And probably got it right on most occasions, if not every time

But the AFL asks him to make judgement calls under duress so therefore, mistakes are going to occur.  It stands to reason

So it's an impossible situation where the umpire has been shunted away from the correct position through no fault of his own

We've got our pound of flesh but the problem will remain

Nothing has been solved because the next time we see a mass of bodies near the goal line, the goal umpire will probably be in the wrong position to make the correct call

Some would call it a toxic environment but because of the universal hatred of umpires in general, we prefer to blame the a-end of a major problem

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. OOZEE by The Oracle

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
