Max Gawn’s goal - the commentary

Surprising to me was the balanced KRock commentary ….. is that a 21st century  version of 3GL?

And looking at it for the 50th time it looks more and more like it should have been a double 50 with Dangerfield and then Close encroaching on the line.  Would have lessened the excitement and drama of Lever’s absolutely inspired brilliant pass to Max in space.

Also, to get picky, that long blond haired Geelong guy had both his arms around May right in front of goal as Lever sent his miraculous kick on its brilliant way.

Boy oh boy how pi553d off would we be had May Lever Petty Max Jacko Brown Tom all stood around and left Hawkins to mark uncontested were the rôles reversed?

On reviewing the footage, almost looked like Brad Close could have made it a double 50m for Lever as he ran into the protected area while Cameron stood on the mark.

I thought that at the time and still think it should have been. We've been penalised before in situations where the player's only chance to not be in the protected area would have been to vanish into thin air.

Prior to this, my favourite goal on replay was Jack Watts goal in 2017 ( Queens Birthday). This is now my official favourite ❤️

So many great things about the Jack Watts goal but, for me, the look of exhaustion and relief after he slots it, as he puts that rather infamous QB debut (and the ridiculing by Pies fans throughout his career) finally to rest.

The ABC -

Thanks heaps for these 5 commentaries to THAT video Whispering Jack! Very impressed with your IT skills! My favourite of the 5 you posted is the one from the ABC. With no fake crowd sound, you can hear the Melbourne players unite in a magnificent roar the moment of Max nailing his history making sausage roll after the siren to clinch the minor premiership in 2021. An epoch-making moment forged forever in my memory, and without doubt for countless other Melbourne supporters also. Bring on the finals and GO you MIGHTY DEES!

I was on a WhatsApp group exchange with 3 die hard Geelong fans during the game.

Lot of goading and ribbing during the game going on. In the morning I received another message saying they couldn't believe they'd lost.

I followed up saying I couldn't believe it either. I said I keep replaying the final sequence but the results don't change.

Told them the best part was the reaction of the Geelong players.Such an enjoyable experience and they should watch it again too.

Magic, WJ. Kudos.

And is it time for a 'Like' button that likes every post in a thread? I've been having daily guilt pangs this week...

Press play, close your eyes and picture it like you're listening on the wireless. Wonderful!

I was in the mid west of WA, by the camp fire, on my own listening on the ABC and it was Wonderful. I loved how quickly the Grand Old Flag came on it was a stunning confirmation, I reckon the ball had barely landed in the grandstand!

The ABC one is good coz no fake crowd noise but who is that clown laughing at Max and saying he’s gonna miss?!?!

Brendon Goddard, to me it was in a, "I hope he doesn't miss" context.

As the ball sailed thru I could imagine you screaming frightening the wild camels. Take care out there.

Absolutely.

I didn't pick that up live, but if lever had made any move to play on it had to be 50 metres. He was basically directly in front of lever

Watched Levers kick to Max a dozen times now. Can't fathom him being unmanned.

Cats perhaps thought Lever going the long kick for goal.

Poor footy as well as smart footy from Max and Jake. Although Kozzie could have got in the way if he ran into that space.

Really poor play by Rhys Stanley - yet given votes by Scott. Unbelievable

For a bit of extra fun, watch the replay of Lever's kick and Macy's mark several times and watch the reactions/ body language of different Cats players each time. For mine it just adds to the joy of the thing exponentially!!

I have done that! In fact, it’s my new hobby.
I’d love for this to be my new wallpaper, but I don’t wanna feel nauseous every time I turn my phone on…

Should have been a 100m penalty, but then hey, we wouldn't have gotten that incredible ending.

The ABC commentary...wow.

I had no idea their commentary box had devolved so much.

Was waiting to hear the gurgle of a bong while Max lined up for the kick.

Also watch for Neal-Bullen's early start to the celebrations - he was confident!

Now I’ll HAVE to watch it again.
Thank you for furnishing me with an excuse. I may have to watch it several more times just to make sure I see ANB’s reaction. 😉

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
