We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Why? Robinson’s an overrated plodder

Ill never forget the comments he made when playing for Carlton years back, that he enjoyed playing Melbourne because he thought we were soft

That was 9 years ago.

He wasn't wrong.

mcdonald is poor below his knees.

Very good point. That means bring jones in for vandenberg.

I'm not that fussed if it's Jackson or TMac. Perhaps the best wet weather footballer if it's going to be wet. Jackson will be a gun. His ground ball work is already better than TMac's but he's not really clunking them yet and a wet slog wont help. I think we'll need Jackson over the next month to give Gawn a decent chop out - not just a couple of minutes here and there. So, I'm happy if Jackson misses and comes back in on Thursday.

this - "best wet weather footballer"  (maybe footballers plural)

I hope Viney smashes him into the ground this week!

Ah good old Bruise Free Footy, still would enjoy seeing Viney smash him into the ground (fairly of course ?).

I watched last week's game again and couldn't see the turnovers from Lockhart that everyone talks about.  I saw them in our match v Geelong (or maybe it was v the Tigers).  He doesn't get a lot of the ball but has all the attributes to be a good small defender.  I thought there was a couple of plays last week that he made the right gutsy calls to leave his opponent and impact the contest which lead to a score for us - I think he wouldn't have been credited with a possession though.

With the setups of most forward lines, there's room for him and Jetta at the  moment.

Interestingly, I felt he was scared of contact where he could have marked it and Wingard got his running in to goal, goal. That was my first response and after looking at the replay, it still felt the same. I'm all for players developing capacity - and clearly the FD see a range of other things that I am not. But, good luck to the bloke.

So no Stef Martin.....that is a big blow for the Lions. Oscar mcInerny to ruck?

I'd leave Jackson out and bring in Jones and Neal-Bullen. If its going to be a slog we want runners.

Tend to agree; I'd also think that Salem could be rested this week - for him, there have been a few pedestrian efforts across the last couple of games (and all players in a competitive, almost full list, should be 100% mojo-equipped).

That could provide a role for someone on the bench at half-back flank. Jetta possibly could be reviewed, as well but he did a fair job across the game last week - it was not just as decisive as we know The Jet to be on game day.

My preferences for the bench / onfield rotations would therefore be:

  • Jones,
  • Jackson,
  • Tomlinson (particularly for flank run and carry), and
  • Neal-Bullen.

Brayshaw would be my preferred slot for Salem on the HBF.

Another reason for these selections, in my view, is that these players could provide multiple roles in various positions against varied opponents across the ground. Smith is also worthy of consideration ....

However, whilst this is the nominated team on a Thursday night, the actual playing slots will vary somewhat.

Massive blow for the Lions with Martin out. Could potentially see Jackson dropped which would be a real shame.

Lions have been playing two rucks all season.

Mostly Martin/McInerney but in the couple of rounds a few weeks back when Martin was out injured they brought in Archie Smith to pair up with McInerney.

I would settle for just Tomlinson onto a wing for AVB. Jackson stays in but takes a break for the next match on Thursday and TMac comes in. I can’t see first year players being able to front up every 4 days! There needs to be revolving selection of a group of younger players over the next 4 or 5 weeks.

I wonder if Jetta is in trouble? I thought he was okay last week.

They could bring in a McDonald/Tomlinson/ANB for Vanders and Jetta.

Agree Daz did his job But showing signs.

Nev himself ... Ripper Bloke!

We are playing Sunday night, and then back at it Thursday night vs Port.

I think LJ will be rested this weekend so he can be cherry ripe for Thursday.  Would be very hard for an 18 year old ruck to play off such a short break.  Stefan Martin being out has made the choice an easier one.

Bench

T McDonald, Jones, Jetta, Brayshaw

Tomlinson could come in to man Robinson on the wing.

The all-day runner, Tomlinson. If sighted by our defenders, he could open a reasonable gateway to the forwards, rather than our reliance on Gawn EVERY time.

Salem won't be rested this week as he is named in the starting 18.  The final four players will come from the extended interchange.  It's the same every week.

With the forecast of rain Id bring in Tomlinson, keep Tmac fresh for next Thursday.

It is heavy rain forecast all week end the oval will be chopped up badly.  Bring in a big runner that can play big minutes so we can ease workload on others

Jones for VDB

Initially I was leaning towards TMac for Jackson but then I started questioning it. The only reason to bring him in is experience and a bigger body. If it's wet he's not likely to be clunking more marks than Jackson, Jackson is better below his knees and also offers a proper chopout for Maxy in the ruck. Keep Jackson in for this one then rest him against Port and bring in TMac then.

Makes sense..my thinking re Tom Mac was that he could use his strength to bring the ball to ground whereas both Weid and Jackson can be questionable in that regard.

Jackson's ground play is very promising as is his ruck follow up... reminded me of a young Natanui

Well my good Earl it will indeed be interesting to see how the compressed fixture is handled

You’d  reckon training and rehab will be tailored for this. They’re not going to do Tom Haffey style post drawn grand final floggings So I reckon there won’t be large numbers of changes week to week

I probably should open up a seperate thread for this but why is harmes no longer being used as a tagger or is he and i just haven't noticed.

i think we could all agree that he plays his best footy as a tagger and certainly not across the half back flank.

I would love to see him shut down Neale on sunday, and simply tag the shït out of him.

as for the team, i would think that one of jonesy or tomlinson comes in for vanders.

hasn't been across the back flank for a host of games now

he's a midfield rotation who can play forward as well at the moment

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
