We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

POST GAME: Rd 04 vs Sydney

I'm a fickle watcher. I also can't stand the sight of blood, I faint if I nick myself shaving. In the meantime, because of an accumulation of post 1964 trauma I can hardly bear to watch a game if it looks like we are back on the frittering away boat. My motto is, I watch the replays if they win, otherwise the pain is too great.

Finished watching the replay and I have great admiration for a very gutsy and determined win. Everybody had a red hot go and, yes there were 'issues', but it proved that these lads have commitment and a will to win again.

What stood out most for me though - and this isn't an example of seeing a half full cup half empty - was the way Melbourne won despite very rarely taking advantage of Gawn's dominant ruck work. It would seem to me the lads need to do a bit of radar connection therapy  because mostly they were where Gawn's taps weren't. Great win, though it must be said, the Swans are not a top side at the moment.

Wouldn't mind seeing a front view of the hit Jones laid on Oliver, miles off the ball.  Oliver was kneeling in pain on the field and when he went off.  Commentators dismissed it as he just being winded.  Looked more than being winded - there must have been a backhanded, clenched fist or elbow.  Jones is a repeat offender and deserves to be cited.

Chistian's Decision  It was Clarrie's fault.

"As Oliver turns, he collides with Jones who braces for contact!"

I wonder what Jones' braced with!!

Can anyone do one of those video things to show the episode?

Do we no longer get an “all the goals” compilation, brought to us by Haymes Paint? I will be sad if that’s no longer a thing, I loved looking out for it the day after a win.

I don’t even mind if someone other than Haymes Paint brings it to us.

It usually comes out Monday after a game. Must not be used to us having a game before the weekend. There's been a video for each of the first 3 games.

Channel 7 are so frustrating to listen to, i lost count on how many times they swapped between Swans are just hanging on, Melbourne are just clinging to their lead.  There was 14 points in it at that stage.

WHY DOES LING ALWAYS SHOUT?

I thought it was because he was on the boundary line and couldn’t work out that with a microphone it wasn’t required but I realised last night he was in the box. Do these blokes not get a performance review now and then?

I have to wait until Monday?! This playing on a Thursday thing sucks! At least I know it’s coming through.

Great to see Trac playing better.

Omac seemed to find himself a few feet out of position.

Frost was very good and Jones showed he is still more than relevant. Funny to see him have words with Zac. Brotherly love.

Honestly there was nothing much in it

And if we bitc£ed and moaned about May's suspension then we can't complain about that hit being let go

Sydney appeared employ a lot of NRL tackling styles, which were fair and I wouldn’t have minded it if it was Preuss Almighty or Trac doing the same.

It just added to the pride I felt watching the game that our boys, especially Clarry, got up and hurt them where it counts. The scoreboard.

I was out well before 8pm last night and im bummed I missed it now.

Watched the highlights and was pretty impressed with the group as a whole.

Tracca looked far more physical than ive seen and that goal he kicked was a pearler. Was he on, or was it just select editing?

Frosty was great on Buddy. I feel when Goodwin gives him a specific shut down role he does really well.

Buddy looked like he was being stalked and harassed by a dog all game. Always looked hurried and put off his usual confident game. A reason for those atypical easy misses perhaps?

Hore for Oscar next week if Nev is back..  Oscar's height advantage means jack, he can't time a spoil at the moment anyway.  Had enough chances in 2019 and going backwards, zero confidence.

Hore is more nimble, a better mark and can rebound.  Please Goodwin, there is no way you can justify not making this change.

Good to get the first win on the board for the season and excellent that it was against the Swans in Sydney.

I have watched the replay a few times now and there are a few things that stood out for me.

To my mind there was less overt celebration when a goal was kicked. It was more "ok. now we look for the next one.' rather than "that's great let's jump and whoop and leave ourselves open to a counter."

I loved the way we structured our attack on the ball in the second half. We looked much more like the team of last year. We attacked in numbers at the ball carrier with a number of team mates around the scrum waiting to receive or step in if required.

I liked Petracca's game and it is a significant building block for him for the rest of the season and seasons to come. He is starting to realise that he has the power and skills to do a hell of a lot more than he has been doing.

Preuss was interesting. He filled a very good role against Alir. It may have been a role that was formulated by the coaching staff and if so, well done and well done that man for doing it so well. In the next couple of pre-seasons I would get him to shadow Max in his training. The way that max has matured in his training and body management is a credit to him and should be a profile for our developing big men.

Pert: "its good for the supporters"

Would be nice to hear him say "our" supporters.

You're one of us now Gary

Yes, l have heard Pert on the media since he took the MFC job and he seems incredibly full of himself. It seems all about him, and not the team. His cameo during the Pies practice game on the video was simply narcissistic nonsense. It was all about him and he did not ever talk about “us”, meaning the MFC.

Such a contrast with Jackson, who was so completely committed to the Dees. It won’t end well...

I went down to Milawa squash with hesitancy.

Decided to confront the potential humiliation with confidence and relaxed humour. Ready to accept defeat but only with honour. Ended with I think support and respect. There was recognition that when our backs were against the wall we responded.

ALL GOOD

BUT

Why do we have to be in this position. I am not sure that the players will bring the same effort and consistency next game .

Wil be interested in seingfre kick count. Umpire intervention did not seem to have the negative impact on offensives and defensive systems. Same actions did not seem to receive th same disruptions.

Fantastic feeling and if able to be continued I may have a better life.

Yes, watched on FOXTEL the first two quarters then went to bed. Woke up at 4.30 and then looked at my iPad. Did not sleep after that watching the replay. Just confirmed to my beloved how “mad” l am!

Possibly on this? Doesn't really look like his head hit the ground but maybe it did?

I hope Oscar is ok but I think it showed we're a better team without him.

No it didn't. A classic a case of confirmation bias at work

That incident occurred half way though the second. Oscar was concussed late in the 3rd quarter (4.36 to go) in a huge spoil that repelled a Sydney inside 50. In the intervening period betwen the buddy incident and when he got concussed we played our best footy of the match, kicking of 8 of 10 goals.  And in that period Oscar worked super hard and his gut running was big factor in creating that web zone Sydney struggled so badly to penetrate.

Omac has not had a great start to the season but was ok on Friday. Not great, ok. His opponent for much of the game had one mark inside 50 for the game and a solitary point. And  had the equal high number of one per-centers with Hore (who played one more quarter than Omac). He did his job.

Cheers binman, just finished watching the third quarter and was looking to see how he was concussed. Jumps to spoil successfully, gets pushed while in the air by a Sydney player and cops an elbow to the head from Oliver coming back at him.

Hard hit and might have butted heads with Sinclair too after the spoil.

He was on from the get go DSP.  Made his presence felt, harassed and pressured when he didn't have it.  When the Swans started getting on to in the first quarter he was getting involved and standing up which is a great sign.

Seemed to fade a little in the  2nd half but quite a serviceable game overall.

Just back from the game and what a great win from the boys.

Gawn just so dominant and Preuss a great foil.

Oliver as prolific as ever.

Jones a real captain's game.

Harmes a great job on Kennedy.

Hore isn't as useless as I thought he was a real surprise packet.

Great job dees have to keep it up against the Saints.

Who was the poster who said Frost was poor?

Thought he did a great job on Buddy and used his pace to advantage at times. Only stuffed up twice, but I’m pretty sure most of the other players stuffed up at least twice.

I’m not a big fan but as was proven late last year, if you give him some continuity of games, he can be quite serviceable.

When Lever and May are back and in full swing, Frost will be even better.

O Mac will surely be the odd one out.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
