I reckon they have gone into complete rebuild mode.  Brown won’t be there in 2051 when their next premiership window is open, so moving him on is ok. The way it has happened (split with the club) is poor business as it lowers his market value.

It’s interesting that we’ve ruled out using pick 25, I’m quite happy for us to be keen to go to the draft with it but at the same time I would like a trade for Brown that is low fuss. 

Going to be interesting to see what our first offer is and what it ends up being.

The art of negotiation is don't tell them what you're prepared to give up, if we say we will give 25, they might say and a player, but surely the next pick won't do, hopefully GWS give us a good pick for pruce.

Think someone suggested on here that we intend to offer our future 2nd instead. Can see multiple picks being swapped in this deal.

They Were great days. I saw Stuart Spencer’s first game in 1950 ,thereafter he was my absolute hero. I recall the Adams/ Healy clash very clearly. We were marginally in front in the last quarter of the 1955 GF when Adams came on as 19th man and headed straight for Healy. Healy had the ball and was bouncing it down the outer side of the centre. Because he was carrying it, every eye was on him. Adams simply crashed into him without any evasive action or attempt to grab him so their heads clashed . All of the 100,000 at the ground saw the incident which was sickening as both players lay motionless on the ground until both were carried off.

Bluey was a marginal player that year, but he became much better than marginal . Spencer left after the winning GF in 1956, because someone offered him a Service  Station in N Tasmania!!!! He later said it was a terrible mistake. . Spencer was undoubtedly the best rover in the VFL , taller than most, with a raking left foot kick . But when he left , Bluey became the second rover, alongside Ian Ridley. 
we were thrashed by Footscray in 1954 GF but thereafter won them all, until and including 1960 , apart from the infamous 1958 blood bath. Then we won again, with a far less superior team in 1964. That was Norm Smith’s greatest coaching triumph .

Baker is bigger than was Adams and his hair is not as red. I hope he makes it, he tries v hard .

Yes it would be exciting if Bakes could develop into a class winger with his skills Pace and potential. Fitness is a key . Let's hope we develop Oscar but also go after Phillips or Polec.

Great post Farmer. I enjoyed the memories you share very much. We seem to have had quite a few players who moved on a bit too early.

The days of low player payments meant that an offer of coaching interstate or a country club in Victoria must have been enticing. Hassa Mann was one amongst quite a few. Players also seemed to retire earlier than today too..like at 28-29. Maybe the  medical expertise wasn't there back then to help them play on. 

I remember sitting with Dad in the old Bay 13 on the wing. INnthe early 60's they changed the numbering system and it became Bay 15. We sat upstairs. I remember Dad pointing out the members on the other side wearing their gaberdeen coats and hats.

Boys selling unshelled peanuts from hessian bags ( and boy did they leave a  mess) and men lining up at the bars and toilets. I remember I used to collect all the  beer bottle tops to use as boundary markers for home games of penny footy!

They banned beer bottles after the umpire, Ron Brophy, got hit in the back at a  match one day by a bottle.  Glad  you lived through that era too Farmer and have those wonderful memories.

Great you have those memories,  thanks for sharing them. It’s seems so hard to believe we were ever strong, so I’m def jealous. i went to my first game in 71! 

It hasn’t been all dark though. The first 2 finals in 87 were like living  in a dream and the 88 prelim was prob my happiest memory as a dee. May we all live to see another flag!

I was only 7 when Stuart Spencer retired, but I thought I remembered him as a right foot kick. I remember he did long drop kicks, and was good overhead for a rover.

Are you dead sure he was a left-footer?

Smashing North in 87 was special! My cheeks hurt by the end of the game from too much smiling and laughing. Beating Carlton in the prelim the year after was the best!! I’d also have add Elimination final 2018. Sitting in the G pre game and seeing a sea of Red and Blue thinking FYeah we’re back! Discussing with the family where all the Geelong supporters were?

That's my usual MFCSS thought.  As I've posted years ago, can Brown fritter away time at the end of a close match using his long run up? 

I cannot see anything in the rules about that (or anything related to 30 second rule!), but it seems as long as the player starts walking in before 30 seconds, he can then take as long as he likes.  Does the clock starts again as he walks in? I think so but not sure.

The rule says something along the lines of starting their usual routine. It’s the reason why those who are lining up for snaps are more likely to be called to play on as they get caught looking at the clock. 

I confess that whenever I used to watch him as a kangaroo is was a constant source of annoyance but if he puts it through the big sticks as a demon I couldn’t care less!

My guess is that we'll use whatever we get from GWS for Preuss and pass that on for Brown. There are some teams with early academy players and also first rounders that need to get rid of them in order to get the points to match. Having our 2nd rounder  plus extra 3rd rounders mean that we can move up the order, which may be one of the options we're looking at.

I'd rather think that this is a part of the modern game (his aptitude for free kicks against infringements) in which the snot goblins have regularly failed to penalise some rather ordinary, unsportsmanlike spoils by backmen over a series of years.

Brown does not tolerate these and because of his tenacity for the ball, it is not too difficult for backmen to put him off his attack and strident efforts for the ball under such circumstances with balletic non-poise. I do concede that some of his choreographed demises in such attempts are far more graceful and predetermined than expected when challenged, now that he is a Demon forward, absolutely all is forgiven and if he gets a six-pointer or enables another mighty Demon to so do, that all is well, as you suggest.

Whichever way one looks at such circumstances and the respective outcomes of the competitive duels that emerge, if it's our team and our players that benefit, it has merit. Selwood, not so much a pure forward, is a classic example of the hundreds of favourable outcomes that can emerge from what was previously known as 'staging'  - and there are a myriad of considered champions that we all can recall who have the same approach to the game. A bit of this, a bit of that to get a nod and free kick, that is all that is recalled. Yes, it has frustrated us for years; now it can delight us for a few seasons, I'd suggest.

Oskar Baker has immense potential for such a role. His sense of space mixed with his speed and agility in close are tremendous assets so it is strongly hoped that he is intensively developed by the FD for such functionalities. Game time will be critical.

Yep, evidently we will rely on further development of our existing quicker speedy outside players which is good. Throw down the gauntlet and see who picks it up.

Probably not a bad idea to get an elcheapo tall Forward/ruck on a 1 year deal as emergency cover. eg, Mc Kernan

Maybe the wrong thread for it but I don't think I see what everyone else sees in Baker.  His GWS game was good... but he barely played this year.  He's been on the list for a few years and wasn't suffering major injuries throughout the season.  It's not as if the club wouldn't have trained him up to play on the wing this year.

I hope he is the answer... but think its crazy to be putting all our eggs in his basket and that of Hunt etc.  Surely bringing someone in to play this role would not hurt
