MAX GAWN RE-SIGNS

Recommended Posts

Fantastic news, I thought Gawn acquitted himself well against Goldstein last weekend. Sure, he had his colors lowered, but he was competitive. This time last year he was getting thrown around by Minson, and was easily pushed off the ball. So his improvement this year has been massive. If he can improve again coming into 2016, he'll give Goldstein hell

He was nowhere at the start of this season, or even 9 rounds into this - his 6th season. Now he is setup to play good footy from his 7th onwards.

I expected it to take this long - so don't complain about how long this has taken - this is about the time it takes for a 208cm ruckman to get going.

#don'tdraftteenageruckmen

And, well done, look forward to the next 5 years with an excellent tap ruckman who can mark and kick a goal.

I agree on the timeframe, but I have to confess I was surprised at the "flick of a switch" manner in which his improvement occurred. I remember a comment from one of the coaches (Plapp, perhaps?) that they were pretty worried about his early season form.

He was immense against Geelong and hasn't looked back. It's been great to see.

Especially taking into account his knee recos.

Just watching the Max Gawn highlights on MFC web.

2nd Q v Pies Gawn at boundary throw in taps over back directly to pederson who in turns gets the call from Bernie and swivels and hits him on the run full tilt...GOAL!!!

Probably the best bit of ruck work since Jamar used to hit Moloney full tilt T centre bounce.

I believe he has the potential to be the greatest ruckman of all time. Dempsey, Madden and Cox are probably the three historical standouts but this kid is going to be something very special. When I first saw him live I thought they were b'sing about his height. He looks way too balanced, athletic and agile for his height. Sandilands is the closest in height and never had the mobility around the ground. His height is already showing a massive advantage where he can easily outreach "normal" sized 200-203cm ruckmen but is also more athletic than them around the ground. Biggest weakness is his tank. If you look at this stats most possessions are in the first half. Once he has the km's up and gets the tank he is going to be special. Don't know what was wrong with him in the first qtr last week but in the 2nd & 3rd he more than matched Goldstein in the centre taps and the whole game changed.

Great news! Love the big guy, and have been waiting impatiently for him to start to deliver. Think he's only whetted our appetites so far, and really look forward to him being a dominant part of our move up the ladder.

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some positive news on Howe too http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-08-14/demons-restart-jeremy-howe-contract-talks

I don't want to derail the thread - I was rapt when I saw Max had re-committed, especially since some worry rats on here were bothered at all the praise Dermie was throwing at him previously and figured the Hawks were going to make a play - however I take it as a good sign that the club has started talking up the Howe re-signing prospect. So good news in both respects.

It's a great bonus for any team to have a few funny buggers in it to lighten the mood and keep the others smiling.

It's a good thing he's rucking well too.

Worried about how many clubs will try and take him after we win the 2018 flag tho.....

You worry too much... worried about Max leaving if we win a premiership, worried about Hogan being distracted if paid millions... rest assured that if we win a premiership, Max will want to stick around to have a hand in our quadrepeat as will all of our other stars... not to mention we will become the destination of choice for everyone else.

Can we saw the same about Spencer or nah?

http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2015-08-14/gawn-commits-until-the-end-of-2018

"A lot of the guys are in the same boat – we’ve been through a lot together and we don’t want to miss out on hopefully what’s at the other end.

“We’ve got some good young players coming through – we’ve seen Angus Brayshaw this year and James Harmes and Alex Neal-Bullen and players like that – who are playing good footy and there’s Christian Petracca still to come, which is exciting.”

Obviously doesn’t rate Jesse Hogan.

With all due respect, this is classic MFCSS. The link between Dermie rating him and Hawthorn making a play is tenuous at best.

I always thought Gawn would re-sign, purely because there was no reason why he wouldn't.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
