Don't know about the kind of talent you would be getting in with those last few - with Frawley tying our hands in FA we won't be getting any FAs in.

Mark Stevens@Stevo7AFL 50s

One of footy's best feelgood stories will roll on. Daniel Cross, who looked done and dusted at the end of 2013, to play on in 2015.

Mark Stevens@Stevo7AFL 1m

Cross had a 15-game trigger to guarantee another year ... he's two short of that after a broken leg, but it won't matter. All sorted

Even before he got injured I would have thought it would make sense to have him for another year. He has been great.

Great news and Cross has been huge for us this year. That fact that his absence over recent weeks is so sorely missed just highlights how far we have to go.

Tapscott - DELIST

Blease - DELIST

Strauss - DELIST

Bail - DELIST

Byrnes - Retired

Terlich - DELIST

Clisby - DELIST

Nicholson - DELIST

Thats 8 spots open right there, plus Chip who is likely gone which makes it 9.

We are lucky that so many of our spuds are out of contract at the same time and so soon. Will be a very quick list rebuild and freshen up.

plus clark makes 9 (or 10 with chip)

2017

Dunn, Hogan

2016

Dawes, Grimes (RFA), Watts (RFA), Michie*, Vince, Tyson*, Kent, M Jones, Spencer, McDonald, Barry,

2015

Clark, Trengove, Jamar (UFA), Garland (RFA), McKenzie, Howe, N Jones (RFA), Evans, Gawn, Fitzpatrick, Viney, Toumpas, Pedersen, Salem, Kennedy-Harris, Hunt, Cross

2014

Frawley (UFA), Tapscott, Blease, Strauss, Bail, Byrnes, Terlich, Clisby*, Riley*, Nicholson, Harmes ®, King ®, Georgiou ®, Jetta ®

McKenzie is very fortunate to be contracted for 2015.

Clark and Byrnes are gone. Frawley will join them.

Strauss surely is gone. Nicholson too.

To them, I'd add Tapscott, Terlich and Blease. That's 8 spots. Jetta takes one. Of the remaining 7, I'd look to FA or trading to bring in two. I'd upgrade Georgiou, and I'd draft 4 (or not upgrade Georgiou and draft 5).

Bail, Clisby and Riley all get one more year (Riley maybe gets two).

Posted

Frawley's gone. Aside from Jetta and Riley (both haven't cemented their spots mind you), the rest can go with him. After 8 years of re-building, it's amazing how many extremely sub-AFL standard players we still have on our list.

Posted

Far out. We have a guy who can't kick a goal from 8 metres out straight in front on our list for another year.

Posted

Must, must payout Evans and McKenzie.

Top clubs will delist better players than these two. Take them as a delisted free agent and you might just jag a Simpkin. Heck GWS or Gold Coast might even delist another Anthony Miles as they trim their lists.

Mckenzie and Evans are just park footballers.

I don't think you should be painting Jetta and Riley with the same brush! Jetta has well-and-truly cemented his spot, he would be close to first picked. Riley on the other hand... everyone makes mistakes but AFL players don't make the kind of mistakes we saw from him today. He probably deserves a pre-season and a (tentative) one-year extension, but if he's cut I certainly wouldn't lose sleep over it!

We have plenty in front of them to get rid of who won't cost a years wage

After todays effort and the disgust and surprise expressed by Roo's at his presser I would be surprised if any of the out of contract players gets asked back (except the rookies). Have never seen Roos so grim

Since then Byrnes is confirmed retired and the other guys I listed are surely 100% gone

I thought I would make a new one as the old one was getting a little long.

2015

* = Best guess of contract length. Would love confirmation...

This would be a good thread as a reference for contracts and also future list management if one is so inclined.

Frawley - Gawn

Tapscott - Gawn

Blease - Gawn

Strauss - Gawn

Bail - Gawn

Byrnes - Gawn

Terlich - Gawn

Nicholson - Gawn

Clark - Gawn

I suspect one contracted player will be traded, at least. Watts should be traded to up draft position, and then pass on those draft picks + top 10 pick for an experienced, committed player. Or maybe even one of Patton or Cameron. No point sticking with Watts anymore. Guys like Watts, Dunn, Frawley, Grimes, Garland, they are unfortunately, losers and will never be at the forefront of a successful Melbourne team. They define this era and ultimately, they must be slowly chopped and moved on. Yes, the likes of Dunn are one of our best, but we need game winners, not passengers.

Boy oh boy, year on year we have the same discussion: the entire list needs to be turned over!

Bail has played every game so far. I don't think Roos shares the popular view on this particular player.

Steady on Nasher, don't let the facts get in the way of a lynch mob!

I can't see Bail going anywhere, he has clearly been playing his role

Barring injury, Bail definitely should be given another year.

But we continue to make bad decisions with fringe players. Two year contracts for Barry, Matt Jones and Spencer are repeats of the mistakes with McKenzie, Evans, Blease, Tapscott etc.

Bail had 7 significant errors on the weekend. He led the team in this stat. This is what Roos was bemoaning, so how can he keep this guy?

He's one of the few players that has some decent run. He'll stay on the list until someone with better ball use and decision making (as well as run) pushes him out

Posted

For mine...

DEFINITELY DELIST

Blease, Strauss, Clisby, Nicholson

VERY THIN ICE TO DELIST
Tapscott, Terlich

TRADE BAIT IF THERE'S INTEREST
Fitzy, McKenzie, Evans, M.Jones

ON THE TABLE FOR A DECENT OFFER (MIGHT BE CONTROVERSIAL)
Jamar, Grimes, Watts

ALREADY GONE
Clark, Byrnes, Chip (probably)

That's up to 16 spots to fill, though more likely we'll be looking at 10-12 spots to fill. Jetta will be elevated, Georgiou might be if Chip goes too. So at a rough guess we'll be looking for about 10 new senior players and 2 rookies.

Posted

That about sums it up Stuie. I'd also add Howe to the trade bait for decent offer group. I also don't think Georgiou has done anywhere near enough to be elevated and will more than likely be kept on as a rookie even if Frawley goes.

Why do we suddenly not rate Clisby? Has looked the goods when he has played and is that driving half-back flanker we need. Much rather him than Terlich.
Clisby has been injured and/or coming back injury, definitely think he is a keeper. Look at what they have shown, not what they haven't been able to do due to injury.

I've never been very impressed with Clisby.

He's average at a lot of things, doesn't seem to be good at anything.

Please, someone, tell me what his hidden strengths are.

Being a good bloke?

I can't see them.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
