Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Have heard this rumoured and am curious to know peoples thoughts. Personally I'd do it. I know it's not ideal to wait another year for an early pick while we're in our window but it's potentially pick 1 next year, hard to see it not being top 3 at least.

If you chose depends who is available let us know who you want in the comments.

I’d be in favour of doing it if we can also improve our remaining draft hand this year. Pick 23 and maybe 37 would have to be involved.  I can see WC finishing in the bottom two again next year even if they get Reid and Curtin.

Take curtin and use him as leverage when Harley Reid wants to come back to Victoria

I know that’s a tongue-in-cheek suggestion, but it’d be seriously long play with a lot of risk involved.

If we really think Curtin is likely to draw WC’s interest to return home post-draft, shouldn’t we be strongly considering selecting him for our own benefit regardless (which I don’t think we do)?
And the inherent risk is that his exposed form on our list would only deter WC from such a trade... and us stuck with him.

No, I want Reid. If trading rights to drafted players was a thing and WC were happy with player available at 6 then it would likely happen, but not for mine under the current rules.

No way! I don't see any upside to this at all.

There will be a good player available at six - take him.

Why take a punt that could go wrong?

Agreed. Taking a good player at 6 this year means that we get a year of development into him whilst we are still in the window for 2024. And we all know windows don't stay open forever

Keep 6.

If anything, I'd offer our F1st + 11 for 7 or 8 this year. Curtain and O'Sullivan would be a great haul

No.
If we can’t manufacture the Reid trade then we use 6 and hopefully get Watson now.

We need to do everything we can to build a high potency forward line now whilst we have the other pieces in place.

I also don’t think the Eagles will be much chop next year but what if they do manage a mid table finish and we end up with egg on face?

A player available at pick 6 is not the leader of the draft pack. There is a reason for this, most likely. It is because that player is still on a learning curve, albeit a reliably skilled fella in comparison to a pack leader who is further advanced currently and who, perhaps, has less to learn/develop at the tender age of recruits.

To my thinking, any one player coming into the Mighty Demons team(s) and procedures has a great many Club adjustments, systems, methods, personnel (etc) to still learn (ie: not yet a largely finished product) ready for the game plan, particularly if alternative plans are to be made available within a team that has traditionally been rather pedestrian in its on-field options in recent seasons. That No. 6 new player would realise these learnings and adjustments, and be more driven to achieve new demands than one who alternatively could assume changes as automatic, relying of past successes to 'get him through to the truly reliability stage' in the big time.

Some 'kids' develop great skills; other 'kids' do the same but overlapping this development with great parenting provides exceptional skills and enhanced readiness.

Not really a fan of reading pick 6.

I would however contemplate trading pick 11 + future first in exchange for the Cats pick 8 + future second.

Oh, now that is an excellent death ride. And actual 'off a cliff' death ride.

If our future first is 18, and their future second is from the bottom 4, the laughs would never end.

As for pick 6; if it is Curtin we're talking about, I'd hold him and think we got lucky with the draft flow. Would be a key figure in our 2028 premiership.

Curtin and O’Sullivan? No way we’ll take two key defenders. I don’t think we’ll even take two talls. One of 6 or 11 will should be a midfielder wether it be inside/outside. Would be shocked if one of Wilson Leake or Windsor isn’t a Demon. We went tall last draft with Jefferson and Adams

Lotta people seem to be forgetting we brought in KPF, KPD, Ruck (rookie), Ruck (rookie) last year

Without a shadow of a doubt, the strong likelihood is that pick would be top 2 in 2024 draft and could well be pick 1.

the likelihood West Coast somehow improve well enough for us to not get a better return than pick 6 is very low in my view

Can't say I'm a fan. We've done exceptionally well to get pick 5 off freo this year, can't see it being  worth a gamble to improve our draft position by a few spots next year.

West Coast are no certainties to finish bottom two next year either in my view. A large reason for their horror two years has been their injury list obliterating their player availability. While the overall list isn't in a good state, you still have Allen and Darling fwd, McGovern and Barrass back, Sheed and Kelly in the midfield with some developing talent and mix of experience around that.

They won't challenge the top 8, but with a full list and a significant home ground advantage it wouldn't surprise to seem them score 4-8 wins and finish as high as 12th.

Throw in a potential top 3 f/s in Levi Ashcroft and we're looking at a serious possibility of our pick being equal or worse than this year. And that's before we understand if there are any free agents that may leave low clubs for high compensation or NGA and f/s talent that may establish themselves as high end prospects (welsh for ade - Camporaele twins for Carlton, Marshall for bris).

The only way I see us being keen on this swap is if we don't rate the talent that's left at pick 6 (Curtin/caddy/leake) and we want to have multiple first rounders next year to trade for an established player which we may be engaged in conversations with now (JUH/King/McCluggage etc)

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
