Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

I’ve been waiting for this combination to try out with JVR, Schache and Fritsch.

I think it’s the perfect balance and very mobile , let’s hope it bears fruit.

Tbh I thought he was 28 or their abouts. 25… I’m surprised.

He was in the same draft as Oliver. In fact both teammates and close friends at the Murray Bushrangers.

I've always been a bit bias on Schache just from dealing with him back then.

Some people forget that during his draft year he was rated the best key forward in his draft year by a fair mile ahead of the likes of Charlie Curnow, Harry McKay and Eric Hipwood. So the talent is definitely there. Being at Brisbane at a time where they were one of the worst teams going around didn't help his development. Then having to go to the doggies where he's had no continuity due to form, injuries and Bevo being an odd unit hasn't helped either.

If it was me I'd give Schache 5 games in a row at AFL level to see how whether he's up to it and just advise him that they have zero expectations, but also just wanting him to compete hard each game.

The compete hard and help pressure the opposition when they have the ball is his Achilles IMO - hopefully he can improve in that area and perform well

He should realise its now or never

Still only 25 , plenty of upside good kick at goal . Hope he goes well. Bbb and tmac will be done by the end of next year if not before

He has a lot to play for and I hope he has been listening to Goody. Whilst you dont see it on TV what he does off the ball and after the drop will be important.

Good luck Josh Schache, try and enjoy your first game in the Red & Blue at the G. Stay in the moment work hard, beat your man, kick a couple and open up the forward line for Fritta, JVR and Kozzie and hopefully stay in the team.!!!!!

I hope he finds good parking around there.

CM

Well, if he can find good parking near Hardware Lane he will at least have proven he's developed a bit of mongrel competitiveness!

Personally, I'm setting my Schache expectations at; kicking a goal, getting a bundle of long-lead marks to help us link up as we move the ball, and having a really good view as Van Rooyen feasts on the 1-on-1 contests created by the faster ball movement and extra space created by Schache's unselfish team-oriented play.

So, to summarise the thread thus far, Schache will:

  1. Have a scrumptious breakfast.
  2. Transmogrify into a competitive beast.
  3. Kick 3 and a half goals.

Go Josh!

4th possibility: he will mark on the goal line with 10 seconds to go and the Demons 3 points down, and will refuse to take the kick until the AFL acknowledge him as Living Person Josh Schache, Freeman on the Land.

Good luck to the lad. Weids is playing like a man at the bombers so I have hope Shaq will reinvent himself too.

Who would have thought we'd line up without Ben Brown or Tmac in the F50 without injuries being an issue. I'm stoked that the FD are taking a look at the whole squad and aren't scarred to mix things up.

OK but I believe that although BBB and TM are playing VFL, and may have underlying 'fitness'  their underlying chronic injuries are the reason they are not performing up to scratch.

I recall we gave the two ex bulldogs different contracts.  Hunter got 2 years but Schache only 1.

So this is it . Couldnt have been given a better game for his debut although Hawks and Eagles just raised their hands and said Hold my beer!_

Hunter wasn’t given a contract by us, it was his original contract he signed at the Bulldogs that had 2 years to run that they’re paying a large portion of over the duration that he’s on.

Schache is also signed on for 2 years.

Does he have a nickname?  If not, I'll nominate "Love" 😁

(I hope I don't have to explain why)

Anyway, his second efforts and doing the little things when he doesn't have the ball is what I'll be most interested to see tomorrow night.

On the few occasions I've watched him at Casey, those were definite areas for improvement.

I'm excited by the fact we're in a no.lose situation with Josh. He either comes in ajd performs a role or he's a bust, but protects Jefferson's development and allows BB and Tmac time to gain form themselves.

But there are a couple excellent posts on this thread that make me intrigued. I've always felt Schache gets pushed off contests far too easily, but Ben Brown does too. But BB and Schache are both excellent kicks and have a height advantage. The thing BB struggles with his ground level and agility, particularly at his age. Schache has him covered there.

In tandem with JVR and Fritsch, with protection from Max/Grundy, Schache will hopefully be able to form a functional part of our system. And if he can, it's a stroke of genius recruiting. I also trust Mark Williams' development credentials to get the best out of him.

Like @dazzledavey36, I hope they give him a bit of time / continuity.

I thought he was serviceable tonight, and did enough for the role.

He isn't our target going forward: that's Fritsch, or Roo, or Gawn, or Grundy, or Pickett even.

So when Schache was our target it was a bit like kicking long to Ben Brown and hope it's neutralised.

What I thought he did well though was when he marked on the flank, too far out to score, he wheeled quickly and kicked very well to a target. The ability to move it on quickly with good foot skills from that position can't be overrated: holding it up is costly.

He finished with 9 disposals for 5 score involvements, including a goal and a goal assist. 4 marks, all outside 50, and 3 i50s. He had 2 stoppage clearances as well (from stoppages he was ruck) and is credited with 2 score launches: I'm pretty sure both of those clearances resulted in shots at goal. This from 76% game time.

I think that's a serviceable first game back in the firsts and think he is worth persisting with.

His ability to take forward ruck work means that the undersized JVR doesn't do it, and Gawn and Grundy can both set up a kick behind play. TMac can't do this, BBB can.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
