Nine Goals, One Gale, One Glowing Report. If Christopher Cross had wandered into Casey Fields on Sunday afternoon, he would have felt right at home. The wind howled, the jumpers flapped and every kick required a meteorological assessment before leaving the boot. Yet in conditions better suited to kite-flying than football, Melbourne produced its most complete performance of the Willow era, defeating Port Adelaide by 51 points to remain unbeaten in 2026. The scoreboard suggests a one-sided contest. It wasn't. FEATURE: 2026 Trade Period
The curtain fell prematurely on Melbourne’s season, leaving us to wait until October and November for the theatre of trading, free agency and the draft to begin in earnest although it is already a major topic for discussion. This is a strange and unfamiliar landscape, reshaped, almost overnight, by Steven King’s coaching philosophy. The spine of the 2021 premiership list was already being quietly dismantled: Jackson, Harmes, Jordan, Brayshaw and Neal-Bullen were gone, Spargo was going, then King’s bold conviction in his own methods bled into the club’s biggest, most expensive names. Oliver, Petracca and May were summarily replaced by a different breed of player, one recruited not for reputation, but for purpose. AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide
There are hoodoos. There are rivalries. And then there is Port Adelaide's proud status as the only AFLW club with a winning record against Melbourne. Before anyone starts lighting candles or consulting ancient football scrolls, the entire evidence base consists of one game at Alberton Oval last season, decided by two points. That's it. One upset, one result, one statistic that has somehow survived a whole year. By mid-afternoon on Sunday at Fortress Casey, that particular entry should be headed for extinction.- 0 replies

Weary from war, 1920s Australia reached for modernity: new homes, new suburbs, electricity and running water threading into daily life, bitumen roads humming under new buses. Jazz became the decade’s pulse in music halls, alongside picture shows and newsreels, and through the radio sets finding their way into ordinary parlours.
But the era’s optimism was not shared equally. Aboriginal Protection Boards tightened their grip, forcing First Nations peoples from their lands onto distant reserves, stripping language and custom under the banner of “assimilation.” Even those who had fought and returned from war found the nation’s gratitude did not extend to them. AFLW REPORT: West Coast
The wind was up, the clouds were down and Waalitj Marawar looked like they had put a few bob on themselves. For a quarter, the Eagles brought the heat, won the contest and had Narrm looking decidedly mortal. Then the Demons found the accelerator. With Meggs and Grandma Meggs stationed around the television, the lawns mowed and the curry ready, all that remained was the football. Grandma immediately approved of Narrm’s red and blue Indigenous guernsey. Magnificent was the verdict, and no argument was entertained.- 1 reply

AFLW PREVIEW: West Coast
Narrm heads west as the raging favourite, but Meggs knows complacency can leave a nasty aftertaste. Last game of Round 4 and we must wait until 5.05pm on Sunday. Plenty of time to mow the lawns, cook a week's worth of curry and prepare for a relaxing evening of football analysis from former Eagle Will Schofield. Unbiased, of course. Cough cough. Waalitj Marawar, the Noongar name meaning “Eagles of the West”, is used by West Coast during the Sir Doug Nicholls rounds. Narrm in Woiwurrung language is the traditional Indigenous name for the area where the city of Melbourne now stands. So, we Demons are called Narrm this week, full of #demonspirit and on fire in 2026.- 2 replies
