Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Clayton Oliver now 2022 Brownlow favourite?

Don't share the optimism of some on here.  I think Gawn has to poll at least 15 votes.  If you run the line through his coaches votes up to the last time they were reported he had 50 - including 4 10's and an 8.  That's pretty close to 5 best ons.  Oliver gets a lot of coaches votes obviously, but they can regularly be outside of the top 3 on the ground.  For mine Oliver, Petracca should get mid 20's, Gawn and Brayshaw likey mid to high teens.  Forget anyone else polling substantially from us.  Miller has got literally nobody taking votes off him and they won 10 games this year.  Miller often polls well in losses going by previous counts.  I reckon he's the one.  Neale will get plenty and I thin those two will finish ahead of our guys.  I expect we'll go close to the highest aggregate votes (likely with Geelong) but I also expect that by the time the count is done we'll all have bigger things on our minds.

I agree that Gawn might take votes off him, but when it comes to the coaches votes I think they often recognise unheralded players who played very well, including defenders, and those in opposition. Those guys don't get Brownlow votes, so as the 4th or 5th best player on the field Clarry might still get the 2 votes as the best midfielder in the winning side.

If I was a betting person I would not be putting anything on Oliver to win the Brownlow. If he didn’t win it last year I can’t see him doing it this year. He will probably still win the B&F but I don’t think that’s as obvious as last year either. Hope I am wrong and he wins the B&F, Brownlow and Norm Smith.

I can’t see a Melbourne player winning it.  Too many stars taking votes off each other.  The 3,2,1 system really hampers players playing on star studded teams.  A 5,4,3,2,1 system would be better but it can’t be changed now.

The AFLCA award is the only one the really counts for anything.  It’s hilarious when supporters bemoan their own players not getting votes in the AFLCA award, blissfully unaware it is their own coach who votes in every single game that player plays in.

I think Freos Brayshaw will win the Brownlow, while Clarry might sneak b2b in the AFLCA.

I'm with ya. Freo only won half a game less, and Brayshaw doesn't have much competition to steal votes.

I agree and Clarry is the best in the league imo, but unfortunately plays alongside 2 other once in a generation type players in Petracca and Gawn, plus some other extremely good players (Gus, Viney, May, Lever and I could go on).  3,2,1 voting systems don't work for teams like that.

I could not give a fig about the Brownlow anymore. Yes it has individual prestige but it is a much flawed assessment. Umpires have enough trouble adjudicating a game let alone giving their opinion on who deserves votes. I suggest winning or finishing high in the coaches votes surely would matter more to players. They are assessing the players that impacted the result and whilst mids still dominate they are more likely to recognise the impact of other roles.

Either way I would prefer our players just add cups to the cabinet than  get distracted by Charlie.

Isn't there an MVP based on the Players votes? I'd suggest that would be pretty high up on their wish list

There was a time after Howe left for Collingwood and I would get annoyed that we no longer feature in MOTY awards - a recent stat showed that How has polled for MOTY more than our entire club (and many other clubs) over the past 20 years, and that includes the years he was polling for us.

While the Brownlow is more coveted than such junk awards, I'd rather we have a team that can compete for Premierships over 5+ years than win the odd Brownlow, Coleman etc.

Slightly off topic but I was watching Pies Vs Blues yesterday with a rabid Carlton supporting mate when he started to rabbit on about how Clarrie is good but Cripps is a footballing god.

So I watched Cripps closely, particularly the 2nd half. He was immense but I’ve never seen a bloke stuff up so much by taking the entire Collingwood midfield on by himself. Especially late. He basically tried to stomp on anybody trying to stop him. Admirable but ineffective.

I had a bit of a chuckle and told my mate, Clarrie may’ve gone down a similar path of not for a small intervention and some brilliant development. Hence, Clarrie is #1 and Cripps is somewhere in the top 10-15. Probably won’t win the Brownlow for reasons repeated in this thread already BUT Clarrie is the Death Star without a built in critical, exploitable weakness. I hope he receives Norm Smiths and Premiership medallions like I do junk mail requesting bank details and a $5k deposit.

So was I but gee I feel sorry fro Cripps.

He's a great player but no Clarrie in that yesterday just showed his lack of success and what he's yet to learn, never played finals etc really puts a player at a disadvantage.

Just look at how Pendlebury plays and leads in difficult circumstances.

Not at the expense of the Dees but I hope Cripps sees some success in rest of career.

Feeling sorry for Cripps??, Should not have even been playing the last two games, so no I dont feel in anyway sorry for him at all.  Look at the way he thought he was Superman, trying to take on all comers instead of using other players. Selfish player IMO

The brownlow goes to a good midfield player playing in an average team. That's why the best players of our generation don't win, Buddy/Carey.

Wines, Tom Mitchell, Priddis are good players but nowhere near Oliver.

It would be nice if the Brownlow was given to the best player in the league for that season.  pretty simple.

I doubt Clarry will get up this year due to Trac and Viney in particular but also the injury that slowed him down.  I reckon we might get a record number of players above 15 votes though!

I know, you spotted him getting a free kick on Friday night.

What! Clarrie got a free kick? Bulltish! Who, when, what, why, where? I saw a few cheap punches from behind, one kick, seven 'holdings', three knees into the groin and a deliberate trip or two - nothing remarkable for Clarrie - but no compensatory frees! I thought I had good vision across the entire game. What am I missing out on?

Would rather win the Normie in the winning GF team than the Brownlow. Basically a fashion parade with all the players wives and/ or girlfriends flopping about on red carpet.

Remember Jo Bailey and Steven Silvagni arriving at the Brownlow. Sam Newman could barely control himself. Years later there was ( i think) Judd with a dropdead gorgeous woman under his  arm. I had to go and take a cold shower.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
