POSTGAME: Rd 02 vs Carlton

Well yeah it got a bit hairy but we got the points and stood up when the game was on the line.

Bennell is going to be good for us, classy touch.

Rivers has poise and moves unbelievably for a first gamer. Huge impression.

TMac was poor and lost nearly every contest, he seems to take a few games to get going. Hang in there.

So many new faces, we got the 4 points, if we can get some early wins whilst the team builds cohesiveness then we'll be threatening again in the post season. Brayshaw Oliver, Viney, Petracca, Gawn, Bennell, Harmes is a helluva midfield unit.

Can we not underestimate Carlton, they've got some quality out there now and fought back in similar fashion against the Tigers in round 1.

Go Dees!

Has anyone seen the post game footage of Harmes with the camera? This is why the sung the song without Max; Harmes was revving them up to sing it as soon as they got in the rooms.

Honestly, it's cringe worthy.

How do we fix it faulty? Say we get rid of Goodwin, who replaces him? We'd want to make sure it's a home run and not another Neeld. Ross Lyon could be an option but do we risk a Malthouse at Carlton situation?

Problem is, unless you poach a star coach from another club, it's always a case of hire and hope.

And I honestly think we have deep seated cultural problems in our club. How many other clubs can give such depressing wins? I've been watching the Dees do this for decades. Smash a team early then sit back and get rolled. We don't often put the foot down, and that is what good clubs do.

Sometimes I wonder if this club would be too much for even the best coaches. Why are we so hopeless at maintaining 4 qtr effort?  Is it the list? Is it the coach? I honestly don't know, although I lean towards coaching/culture.

Stopped watching midway through the third. Could see where the game was heading happy to see we somehow won.

I cannot remember a team that can look like a top 4 team then a bottom two team in the space of a quarter.

Gary Lyon is also impossible to listen to, the constant negative comments about Melbourne (even when we were flying) is just so draining

I know! It’s like self-flagellation for him - he obviously gets a perverse pleasure out of it. He is the epitome of MFCSS!

Messiah complex.

When the players perform like stars for a quarter then take their foot off the gas once the pressure comes on, that's nothing to do with the coach. If you want to judge Goodwin, judge him on the first quarter - when everyone on-field was doing what they were supposed to do.

Agree with this. Realistically it's been this way for the majority of the days since Northey.

Yeah, that wasn't impressive.  They really took the foot off halfway through the second and it nearly cost them.  Once that hard contested pressure was removed Carlton was able to get their skillful players on the outside and started to move the ball through us.  They are soft as hell, but if you give them the time and space they have the ability to hurt you.  Hopefully the players learn from this and keep the pressure up for an entire match next time.

Exactly you could sense trouble with about 5 minutes to go in second quarter, we started to lairise and Captain Max was number 1 culprit, then we had May trying for a specy off the back of the pack that led to their first goal. Added to that we stopped running and dropped tacking pressure. In short we dropped back a gear then found ourselves besieged and had no idea how to regain control. Worrying signs for me. Their is a lot of potential talent there but big questions on player selection, game plan and leadership.

Roos got four quarter efforts pretty regularly. Not always, granted. But more often than not. That’s my recollection anyhow.

Can't believe players like ANB and Hunt getting a free pass here. They were non-existent after quarter time. 7 and 9 possessions, and most of those were in the first quarter. OK, not helped by disposal coming forward, but they were poor for most of the match.

Also, Jackson. He might as well not have played. He's a KPF/ruck, and took one mark? OK, young, OK great to blood him early, but there's a price to be paid, and we paid it. No accident that Pittonet and the other Carlton talls got on top. Also no accident that we then have to pull Petracca out of the middle to play deep forward to provide the target that Jackson didn't. The consequences of someone like Jackson going missing in action have a flow-on effect all through the team and the structure.

Same with Rivers. OK again, great to see him out there, for a first gamer he was a revelation. But he also made at least a couple of stupid mistakes that cost us majorly - the kind of thing that if O'Mac had done them, there'd be burnings at the stake. You can forgive his inexperience, but that doesn't make the cost of those mistakes go away.

I just don't know what people expect. You have players out there who are not performing/absent/making mistakes/missing, and you're all surprised that the other team managed to put together some kind of performance?

I agree to an extent Bing. Think you're being a little tough on ANB but I certainly don't think Hunt does enough. He's a very good front runner imo and I'd prefer to eventually see a gut runner such as Bedford win selection over him. We should also remember that two players were debutants and one hasn't played for, what, three years? Those three weren't going to run the game out all that well, although pretty happy with Rivers. May, also is probably still short of a gallop.

Here's the thing. We're exactly where we thought we'd be, one win, one loss. Back on the G' next week and with a good opportunity to be 2:1 up. Kozzy will want to make amends and it's a game that we can win.

I've been waiting for them to learn and keep the pressure up for an entire match for about 3 decades

Yep, spot on.

Ad to the above our kicking went back to normal. Terrible. And tat was die to the increased blues pressure. Nothing exposes poor technique as much as pressure.

Remarkable we won. Te blues fans will be furious they didn't. Some sort of game of footy when both clubs fan are angry.

Don’t underestimate Carlton under Teague. They improved immensely in the last half of 2019 and won plenty of games during that time.

I think we’ve also lost the edge in fitness that we had during the preseason as a result of the Covid19 break and that will come back with a few more games under our belt.

One advantage I can see is our depth - there are three or four players who can come in and replace others which I think is going to be a crucial factor this season.

The other thing is that it’s mid June and we’re out of the top 8 on percentage. How good is that?

I don't necessarily disagree but pretty rough to single out the kids when it was our leaders who failed to assert themselves and take control back after half time.

I got used to no footy during lockdown. I kind of missed it, but it wasn't like I was chomping at the bit to see us back because the game against the Eagles was a painful reminder that we learnt nothing in the off-season and Goody clearly doesn't know what he's doing.

And here we are. Footy is back. My team just won and I'm sadder than I have been in the last 3 months because it's painfully obvious that we are a very, very average team.

I guess what I'm saying is that during lockdown my team was terrible but at least I couldn't see them be terrible and I could pretend they aren't, or at least it didn't matter (i.e. there are bigger things than footy etc.)

Sigh, tough times.

I need a drink.

Exactly how I felt.
A very MFC like performance today.
Proved they have learnt absolutely nothing and are as mentally weak as ever.
Having said that they did surprise me by hanging on.
Was sure our total humiliation would be completed.

One thing that really struggle to reconcile with our club is how poor a return we get from our players in the 'experienced` bracket. I'm not talking about leadership, I think that word is overrated. I'm talking about pure football output. Over the last 20 years I can think of so many MFC players who's output is just hugely inconsistent as they go through their physical peak. I would have thought the one thing you should get from an experienced player is consistent output. The whole idea of gaining experience is that players get comfortable with what they need to do to make their contribution to the game.

It must be a freaking nightmare for our coaching staff. You expect a lack on consistency from the young guys, but with us you have no idea what you're going to get from these supposed experienced guys. Nathan Jones over his career has been an exception to this, and it seems we get pretty consistent output from Oliver and Gawn. But most of the rest of them are confounding. I cannot see how someone like Tom McDonald can be as poor a contributor as he is right now. I always thought he perhaps just wasn't good enough when he was playing in defence, but his season forward a few years back was exceptional. How can he now be this bad? Do these guys get ahead of themselves, stop doing the work, and fall of a cliff??

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
