Set shot goalkicking

Both Melk and Trac and pretty gifted and skilful players - we see that time and time again particularly with field kicking

However their set shot goal kicking is really poor. I can’t recal the game last year but Melk basically played on and kicked around his body from about 20m almost in front - when he had the option to simply go back settle and kick a drop punt

I think the problem is not only between the ears but also technically they are far better when moving - Tracs set shot yesterday showed his ball drop was terrible - way too high and lacked control into the boot

i guess no easy or quick fix but I hope both are getting plenty of individual coaching on addressing this

in the interim maybe get a Fritter or Harmes to run past and take shots on the run

I think we really need a kicking coach.  Someone mentioned trying to get Yze back to fill the role, and I think this game showed us just how badly it is needed.  One of the things that the top sides all have in common is that they don't miss the basic shots on goal.  We need to be much, much better at this skill if we want to consistently match the top teams.

Can not believe Tracs kicking issues haven't been addressed, they're so obvious, his ball drop is so high. One of the commentators  even said he dropped it from almost head height.

I though Trac played very well on Saturday and has been building nicely over the past few rounds but his set shot goal kicking is letting him down. I reckon he needs to practice kicking set shots while under water.

I'd keep him above ground, myself, and just give him some tips on how to kick a footy. I recall when I played Under 16's the coach took me aside and gave me some tips. My kicking improved overnight.

Muscle memory is hard to overcome. And tracs technique is awful. Check out how his hands are holding the ball when he took that set shot.

Yze reportedly very happy at Hawthorn. Bugger.

It's the basketball background. He's slam dunking it onto his foot

Technique is one thing, performing under pressure is another. Mostly between the ears I think, amazing how the basics drop away when you have doubts filling your mind.

They need to practice set shots at training with some real consequences. Tracc has to eat tuna salad for a week should get results

Kicking is an exact art. Salem's ball drop is flawless. He holds the ball all the way to the boot and it is inline with his head. None of this can be said for Petracca.. Huge drop, ball well out in front.

Correct. Ball drop is the key. Both in the starting point and in control onto the foot. The guiding hand should control the position and posture of the ball before it comes into contact with the foot. Note that it is "guide" not "drop" and should be gentle.

Tracca is of the school that believes that if he slams the ball onto the foot it will go further. He needs some one-on-one practice guiding the ball onto the foot to produce perfect drop punts starting with short kicks and building up. Develops muscle memory.

Not hard to fix but takes time.

I'm more concerned with how often our players look to pass the ball when they mark inside 50.

If you can't kick 50 metres you shouldn't be on an AFL list, so go back, take some responsibility and kick the goal.

Melk hold the ball almost horizontal to the ground when he is lining up for a drop punt - its a bizarre way to kick a footy. Our better kicks - Salem and Fritsch - hold the ball on a more vertical axis and drop it low to the foot before releasing their hand.

TMac holds the ball very steady and low down minimising also the potential skew to his foot - the exact opposite of Petracca. TMac lifts his leg straight and high. Petracca slams the ball from so high on to his boot it rarely connects cleanly.

Clarry kicks for goal with a real cross kick angle. His right leg goes from way outside the line to way inside the line. As a result his set shot kicking is terrible.

Drives me spare that these guys don't practice technique more.

I can understand that pressure can cause problems with set shots.  But if someone like Petracca has been shown how to do a low ball drop (I presume he has!) I cannot see how pressure would cause him to revert to a high ball drop.  It might mean he is too stiff with his action or something and he still misses, but I can't see how pressure would cause him to revert to a high ball drop.

Its a shame because he has a serious football brain and doesn't ever lack endeavour.

BUT... in the Hawks 1st semi last year his excellent work in short kicking was undone by inability to hit a long target into attack. Trying to kick the cover off as you allude to.

This issue has potential to limit his career and/or prevent reaching potential  (as is now occurring)

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
