Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Billy Stretch again underwhelming!

When he fires he is awesome.

I wonder if he has lost pace. He certainly has shown how its done in the past and is an alternative to a couple of others.  If he doesnt     fire than it may be end days. I would  take a punt at a large ground like the Mcg.

Stretch wasn't that bad, I'd give him at least another match or two to find his feet (again?) at this level. It's a big step up from VFL.

Re other changes, two factors that will probably come into play are:

- we have a very short turnaround (as noted)

- Casey have a bye next week

IN: GARLETT, LEWIS, JETTA

OUT: SPARGO, STRETCH, J.WAGNER

The outs very unlucky J.Wagner to come in if Jetta isn't fit.

Garlett for Spargo...

Spargo had some nice little cameos but can't lay a solid tackle and opposition players know & expose him....

If he can't tackle then he needs to get a lot more possession & hit the scoreboard regularly, neither of which he does.

Oscar probably rested with concussion.

Nah, ANB already kicks better than Greg Parke, just nowhere near as good at marking.

Pretty sure you wouldn't be able to Vape on the G just before the first bounce either 56.  Stamping them out would become an expensive habit also eh.

Those changes look beautiful on paper.

I wouldn't play Lewis with the 4 day break into the Tigers game,  hes no spring chicken anymore and coming off a hammy..

I think Spargo may eventually be a bit Caleb Daniels like,  he is generally a good user of the ball, but 7 possessions and 1 tackle really doesn't cut it.

Garlett to get one more chance based on his BOG performance at Casey. Any other changes  will depend on injury and fitness. Stretch needs to do better though of he wants to keep his spot .

I’d hold fire on Garlett. It’s great that he had a big game for Casey. Spargo is already likely to make way for Lewis or Jetta; I’m happy enough with how the other players went not to feel the need to change it. If he keeps playing like that in the VFL his time will come, it’s just not yet.

I think we should roll the dice of 1 tall defender against the Saints forward line. I'm a big Petty fan but last year against the Saints he was exploited for a lack of suitable match up and poor team defence and that has to be the focus again.

Lewis and Jetta in to the backline means 2 defenders have to make way or be reassigned. I think it might be time to try Salem up the ground, can always swap him with Fritsch or Lewis if it isn't working.

T. Smith for Preuss if we want to maintain a bigger forward line, or we could go small. Unsure who gets the last couple of forward spots. I like Spargo because despite the slipped tackles and limited ball winning you can see he's a smart footballer who gets to the right spots, which then makes it easier for everyone else.

FB: Jetta  Hibberd  Hore
HB: Lewis  Frost   Fritsch
C: Salem   Oliver  Stretch
HF: Melksham T Mc  Petracca
FF: Hunt  Weid   T. Smith/small
Foll: Gawn  Harmes Brayshaw
Int: Viney, Jones, J. Wagner, C. Wagner/Spargo/Garlett/Lockhart

Nasher, I reckon when Jeffy plays a game like yesterday , his confidence soars! I wouldn't risk an extended break given Casey has a Bye next week. I think we pull the trigger and give him a chance, sooner rather than later. Next week ideal and if it works I reckon we go a long way towards a win. In a team lacking seriously good finishers with goal sense and pace, against the AINTS he must play! How many games has Stretch, Spargo, et al taken and become match winners. ZERO. Jeffy can and has done this for us and so he plays.

In: Garlett

Out: Spargo/C Wagner

I think it’s Jeffy time. In the JLT and the scratch match against Pies he looked more likely than Spargo to be playing Round 1 until his injury. He was on a club-mandated restriction on his game time in VFL 1 but did show a bit of class when he touched the ball. By all reports he was great yesterday. Look at the way Richmond won yesterday, their small lightning forwards destroyed Port on the rebound and with their forward pressure. If Jeffy can reproduce his defensive efforts that had him the number one pressure forward in 17 or early 18 it could help us get on a roll. He can make something happen from nothing too.

Spargo did set up a couple of goals with his low disposal count and isn’t too bad in traffic with his little sidesteps, maybe that will save him ahead of C Wagner although his lack of tackling is a concern.

Not sure about the readiness of Jetta and Lewis. Might be best to save them for Richmond.

Petty in for OMac if still concussed.

I thought J Wagner was pretty good - playedhis role and disposed the ballwell. Would be surprised if he was dropped. Jetta must still be in doubt.

Good point CF

i thought it was the most rounded and composed game from Josh W. ( must admit I am not one of his fans)  but he hardly made an error and his ball handling  on a dewy night was very good. Not to drop for Saints at least.

Tigers will need defence of speed speed and more speed! Though.

I think he will always be a backup option but if he plays like that he’ll get opportunities.

Breakout game for a now confident  Hore against Sydney, Oscar to go, May to come in, move around, and get his act together. Forward line is now open and functioning.

Saints have pace and Billy needs to stay in. No good dropping him after one game every time, it is destroying any confidence he needs. I would give him 2-3 games at least and give him the opportunity.

I agree they made us look hopelessly slow last year we must go with our fastest possible team and play full four quarters to win

Sydney are not really traveling well at all so we can’t get too carried away with that win albeit a positive step

I like Petty for OMac but still have nightmares about his debut game last year where he really was found wanting big time largely due to zero pressure up the ground

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
