Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

When JV gets back I hope they don't have he and Oliver on the ball at the same time.

They can get in each others way what a quandary to have. What a plethora of midfield riches we have. Yesterdays game showed that a team of hard contestants will beat a team of quality primadonnas  everytime. What a great game to watch live and get soaked in beer spray in the bullring after the game Fantastic day!!

What a delicious dilemma though.  I am sure they can arrange rotations / forward stints / bench time to keep them out of each other’s way.

I really hope Smith gets up for the Casey game this week and does enough to come into contention for the senior team. He would release Fritsch from the backline, and put him back to wing / HFF where he has played his best football. JKH was okay yesterday, but it is an easy choice to make the switch.

If Tyson is fit, he definitely plays - probably for Spargo, who was also okay yesterday, but is next in line. If not Spargo, then perhaps Vandenberg.

In: Viney, Hannan, J.Smith

Out: Tyson (inj), Kent (inj), Kennedy-Harris

As an aside, I'm not sure that Kent has a future as an AFL footballer. He hasn't made it through three AFL matches in a row for two years now. Perhaps his body just isn't made to play the sport at the highest level.

VDB!!?? The beast?

And as far as Kent’s propensity for injury goes, what he suffered this week wasn’t in that category.  Pure impact.  Could happen to anyone unlucky enough to be there at the time.

Completely agree. He isn't perfect, he makes mistakes, but he runs hard, and gets to where the ball is (which sounds straightforward, but it is not something that everyone does well, such as modern times Garlett, the guy being touted as a replacement - who can, and often goes, missing for entire games). On that note, I'm genuinely concerned that I'm seeing his name as a potential replacement for a kid who's having a dip and contributing nicely to a winning team. Garlett has been tried a couple of times this year and has done no such thing, save a couple of moments.

Yeah the bump was fair. Just more sheer bad luck unfortunately :(

On the other hand, me might have been lucky that the head knock between Harmes and Melksham didn't appear to have any consequences (other than Melksham's immediate discomfort).

In fact, perhaps we should remind ourselves how tough all AFL footballers are. If I get a paper cut I'm out of action for hours.

This has been my worry, because our mid field has really gelled over the last 6 or so weeks. Viney must accept that he has a supporting role and that we are lucky to have him up our sleeve.

If Dom Tyson is fit then a tough decision will need to be made , because Tyson has been running into some terrific form so the "fringe players"such as JKH may miss out despite having his best game because of the way he covered ground.

Young Spargo has been a really good team player and he is one of the reasons our defence (yes I am talking defence) has been functioning so well because the pressure applied by our mids and fwds. AVB ,Spargo, JKH ,ANB  are all 2 way runners which is something we did not have/do earlier in the season. These blokes are our lesser lights and their efforts are helping OMac, Frosty etc contain opposition targets because they are not getting left 1 out in half the ground. We are NEVER going to stop good sides ALL the time, but at the moment we are restricting them enough to let our scoring ball movement to show through.

Antbody calling for Spargo out should go and watch the replay

Time and time again his pressure assisted our defence and he was involved in numerous score movements

Tha players seem to love him and he has become too important to drop at the moment

Assuming they pass fitness tests, there are three key ins for the Cats clash.

1) Viney - the skipper has been preparing for his date with Joel Selwood for over a month now and barring a hiccup it will happen.

2) Hannan - we all saw what he brings against the Eagles. Could he be Mr September, rather than Trac. Sounds like he will have to be nursed all the way through though.

3) Joel Smith - provides pace down back and gives us the flexibility of having a third tall option. Geelong is a tall side and Stanley and Sav, along with Taylor may all play, although I suspect Taylor will play on Weid. Frosty get TomaHawk, OMac gets Sav or Taylor and Joel Smith ensures we are not caught short via rotations down back and can pick up Danger when he rests up forward, assuming Jetta goes to Menzel. If they send Henry forward, he's the perfect match-up for him as well. We also need Smith in because he gives us options if things go wrong or we have injuries. He also is a right-footer and in a side that already has three down back, he's a better fit than a fourth leftie in Bayley.

Two of three outs have already been decided - Kent and Tyson.

The third is between three players and all are hard calls but one will have to be made.

JKH - The most likely switch, but he was very impressive against GWS and will stay in if one of our three back from injury doesn't come up in time.

Charlie Spargo - Our little Ricky Jackson dynamo was at his creative best against GWS and would be very stiff to miss and given he's our best forward crumber, I'd be surprised if he cops the bullet.

Bayley Fritsch - In terms of structure, Smith gives us a genuine third tall defender and that means Bayley goes back to wing/forward. Then it's a battle with JKH to decide who gets Dom's spot on the wing. It's a lineball, but having a right/left combo with Vanders is probably the key to him winning out over JKH.

B: Jetta (Menz) Frost (Hawkins) Hibberd (Henry/Taylor)

HB: Salem (Narkle/Jones) OMac (Esava) Lewis (Duncan)

Centre: Vanders (Kelly) Harmes (Danger) Fritsch (Menegola)

HF: Petracca (Koladazwhatever) Weid (Taylor) ANB (Tuohy)

F: Melksham (Stewart) T.Mac (Henderson) Jones (Bews)

Ru: Gawn (Stanley) Brayshaw (Ablett) Viney (J.Selwood)

Int: Oliver (start off to bugger up Scott Selwood tag and fire him up) Spargo J.Smith Hannan

They are my preferred choices as well, IF fit,,,  despic.

Not dropping him now to late to rest him, other then this bye week.

He's an important cog in our transition wheel.  midfield distributor.

His agility adds defensive pressure to the opposit... and he gives us great help with ball in hand, inside F50.

We need him in. I wish we had another of him.

Can’t believe people are suggesting unforced changes to a winning team. Absolutely ridiculous.

Hmmm. ... Smith back for kent allowing Fritsch to go to the wing or Fwd where his laser passes will create scoring opportunities...Viney in straight swap for Tyson

Hannan might be unlucky. His game against WC was excellent but you can't take injured players into a final...

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
