What did Jack do in Round 23???  Or the other 100 of the 150 he has played. Needs to grow up. He is 26

Named in our best. Don't blame him for our insipid display.

206 pages on Jack Watts lol

If he was picked anywhere else besides pick 1, most people wouldn't care he was being traded out.

Cases in point - Morton, Sylvia and Toumpas.

Stupid post the above.  I couldn't care if he was no 1 or number 100.  He is amongst our best 10 players.  Bottom line.  And we are giving him away.  None of this is complicated.

The Weid?

perhaps OD but as he will probably spend most of the year at Casey I cannot see him qualifying as a regular whipping boy.

I was starting to think Lewis was making a late run for the role this season but I suspect his B&F position will keep the wolves away for the first half of the season at least.

No.

Not bottom line at all.

He might scrape into the top 15.

Do you really not understand that Motlop is a restricted free agent and compensation rules apply?

the compo rules still effectively grade a player

the compo rules have changed since frawley, sylvia et al days and are now less generous

iirc correctly an end of first round pick (a la motlop) indicates an 'A' grade player which motlop hardly is and $600k (if true) post new cba is hardly a large salary or indicative. Dawes was supposedly on about this pre cba.

but we all suspect this is just the afl playing favourites with the big$ picture in mind as usual. Pick 19 for motlop stinks.

pick 30+ for watts plus paying % of salary stinks even more

Top ten for sure! Even if he was only 15 as you suggest we are still giving away a player in our best 22. Can you be sure pick 30 or whatever will be top 22 next season?   Don't think so. Thus we are a  missing a good player from our best team. Crazy.

I don't post here very often but this appalling post has motivated me to do so.

I don't think any of us here know the full extent of this story so for you to come out and attack Mahoney's and Goodwin's character in defence of Watts, using his apparent 'loyalty' as an excuse - is really poor. He has been a well paid employee over this time and appears to be (see how I don't portray this as fact?) the type of character who was happy to go along for the ride, or do the easy thing. You have no idea if Jack has always had the best interests of the MFC at heart. Zero idea. If he did, he certainly had a strange way of showing it by in my view picking and choosing when to perform.

The one thing we have been told is that after 9 years and 150 games, his inconsistency cannot be tolerated any longer.

Given we failed as a club this year due to inconsistency (was not rd23's fault, not Adelaide's fault, but the losses to NM x2,freo,haw that stood between us and top 4 - let alone finals), i think that whether they are right or wrong on Jack it is clear they are trying to address why we came up short. That is their role and they should not be attacked for it or have their motives questioned.

Personally, I had held some hope he would stay and turn it around, but his little video he has released eroded that hope and replaced it with anger.

Lovely for him to respond to a young concerned supporter yes, but to use that as a chance to overlay a swipe at the club and go on to essentially pisstake the club (my interpretation, others may differ) left me furious.

How many other 26/27 year old 150 game players would release that when moving clubs? Compare to Jarman Impey's message to PA supporters - classy and gracious. Jack's approach to me is childish and immature. Perhaps that is why he is so well loved, perhaps  it is also why he's always been inconsistent. There have been a few other indicators of this over the journey.

Do keep in mind Paul Roos was in a highly fortuitous position during his tenure. He was to be judged only a little on wins, moreso observed cultural change. He needed to build mateship and unity - I have little doubt Jack is top notch in these areas. We are through that stage and now need to break the ceiling. Evidently the FD think Jack, who appears to have developed so poorly and slowly on field and arguably (per video) off it, is not the best exponent of the breakthrough year.

Whether we make top 4 next year will have nothing to do with Jack, and him thriving elsewhere will not mean this was a bad decision.

And that’s why you don’t and should not post. It was about inconsistency being accepted. If we dismissed players for inconsistency, then a lot more players would be traded.

It was about the way it has been handled. Most agree it is very poor.  Watts has been dismissed and whilst I don’t agree with his latest post, it was probably due to frustration and hard to argue with that.

I don’t agree with the way MFC have managed departures like Woewodin, Spalding, Green & James McDonald. All loyal until they were discarded like yesterday’s newspaper.

A few have hinted at some secret reason why Jack has been given his marching orders.

My spies have gone to work and discovered this "secret truth".

  • it wasn't Brock McLean who sicced the AFL on to us re tanking, it was Jack Watts
  • it wasn't Joe Gutnick who dobbed us in to the AFL re salary cap, it was Jack Watts
  • we were going to draft Ollie Wines but Jack Watts said if we did, he would upload "those" photos
  • Jack Watts personally organised the player protest on the day of 186. (The plan failed, they were supposed to lose by 200.)
  • Jack Watts introduced Steven Dank to the MFC doctor and directed him to give us his best gear. Then called ASADA.

But the one that tipped the scales was on the night of Mad Monday. He threw up on Max Gawn's bed and said "I've been waiting five years to do that!"

Thing is ...  we've finally got to the emerald city and now we can see what's behind the curtain. It's not an elite player yet to fulfill his potential after all. It's a decent player with good skills but middling impact.

If he stays at MFC next year he will be in and out of the side like Kent and Bugg. Brought in based on matchups and VFL form.

*** Personally, pick 21 or 24 is fair for Jack. We paid 23 for Vince, 31 for Hibberd and 30 for Melksham who are all the equal or better players than Watts and were similar ages when traded.

Thank you for sharing.

I'd suggest Port are giving up a fair bit in that trade. I assume Melbourne must be paying a fair chunk of his salary to get it over the line.

SWYL. Sentiments understood.

Much angst is leveled along a notion he's running away. He woke up one morning and found himself outside !! Many dont or cant see this. Remove the bullshlt rhetoric from the club. Just look at what is. This also goes to fair price.

Its a fair price from Port for Scrap !!

Jack is undoubtedly responsible for his own life and actions, as far as he ( or we in our own )can affect them .

There's a bit going on and Jacks just collateral now.

We'll settle for #30 or there abouts...and that's not even the purpose of this exercise.

Often in footy we suggest lowering of eyes. I can only suggest to some...lift and open.

No sure why i bother though. The Inquisitors have spoken. Burn him.

You keep alluding to "something else" going on and for people to lower their eyes as if you're in the know about something. Either front up and say what you mean or stop spinning conspiracy theories while hiding behind a veil of vagueness.

In some order:

Viney, Oliver, Jones, Gawn, Hibberd, Jetta, Tom McD, Hogan, Hunt, Petracca, Garlett, Tyson and Lever are above Watts in our 'player rankings'. That's 13 players.

Lewis is declining but an argument could be made.

ANB is rapid rising and so too Oscar for the specific role they play.

If Brayshaw can stay on the park he could be anything.

Jack Watts is a role player, which isn't a slap, I love role players - have enough of them do their job and they will win you flags when the stars cancel each other out. But the suggestion that he is amongst the top players is incorrect.

It is one of my issues with the club throughout all our admins and many FDs - we never treated Watts like the role player he is. Get a question about Watts - 'Jack is a role player at this footy club, next question...'

As it stands, this deal is on the table and will be close to signed off tomorrow or Tuesday:

Melbourne
GAIN - Pick 21
LOSE - Watts and Pick 66

Port Adelaide
GAIN - Watts and Pick 66
LOSE - Pick 31 and 34

Gold Coast Suns
GAIN - Pick 31 and 34
LOSE - Pick 21

Port are effectively parting company with picks 31 & 34 for Jack.  All things considered,  that's a bit more than what they'd ideally want to pay.

But as @Watts Jurrah Dunn? indicated above,  we may have agreed to pay a fair chunk of his salary for next year or for both the next 2 years.  And if the only way to get pick 21 was to pay part of Jack's salary,  so be it.  Clubs have to pay 100% of the cap these days so we may well have had a bit of free cap space anyway.

Otherwise, getting back pick 21 allows the club to draft 3 players in the 2nd round of the draft ... or, we might bundle the picks up (21,  27 & 35) into a different configuration by way of other trades with perhaps a view to getting back into the first round of the draft.

n.b.  I've stated previously that I would have kept Watts but can fully understand the want or need to trade him too.  There's a few players who might fall into that category.  You've got to spend money to make money and all that ...

Both Goodwin and Roos have tried that at various times but he's always been a media favourite and he's either played too well or too inconsistently to be a traditional role player.

Having a game based on skills isn't really suited to just being a standard role player. If he routinely was the back up ruck and made some contests forward or if he was a hard running half forward every week then it would be easily to control the narrative about him. Unfortunately he's floated around different roles depending on the season/week/game and not got that continuity. A fresh start in a defined role makes that easily to control.

It takes 30 on your list to win games through the season and it's how you play as a team that has a far greater impact than one player from the 30.

Especially not a top 5-10 player and Watts can't be a top 5-10 player because he's not a consistent performer that the side is structured around.

With Hogan, Tom McDonald and Pedersen we have 3 good options to be the 2 key forwards who the forward line works around. Watts isn't the high level goal kicker who gets special consideration inside 50. He's not a gun half forward in the mould of Tom Lynch (adel) who controls ball movement.

His class will be missed but in terms of winning games he is easily replaced by a player who contributes more in other areas.

Basically yes. although "motivate" is a very limiting word that suggests a short-term event such as a rousing speech at halftime, rather a full year of developing an individual about life & footy and dealing with all aspects of their make up. Most of the "trade JW" posts seem to point the finger of blame at JW and absolve the coach(s) of any responsibility. I suspect both Watts and Stringer will pop up at another club and emerge of the next few years as great players and both the dogs and dees will regret their decision.

here is some interesting reading.

"2012 represented a step backwards for Martin both on the field and off. On 3 July 2012, Martin and teammate Daniel Connors missed a mandatory training session at the club. According to a statement released by Richmond, the pair had taken prescription sleeping medication the night prior and had overslept. Martin had also been drinking that night and had the medication prescribed. The club said both had failed to uphold team standards and Martin was suspended for two weeks for the incident. Meanwhile, Connors, who was on a final warning under coach Hardwick, was sacked.[11] After fourth and third place finishes in the club's best-and-fairest the years prior, Martin would only manage 10th spot in 2012"

We all know what happened after - the coaches at Richmond, mostly Hardwick I would guess, clearly decided to take on the challenge and work with Martin "to become the best he can be" and it worked.

The easy, soft option would  have been to trade him

They tried: nobody was half interested after DDiligentia.
