First list update for the year 2025!

I am listing Moniz-wakefield as a "Cat.A Rookie" I know there is some confusion as to this, It is possible he is still a "Cat.B Rookie"

this means we have 1 position available for a "Cat.B' player (this is to be confirmed as it may actually be three "Cat B" positions now!)

OR

we have 1 "Cat A" rookie spot left (and possibly 1 "Cat B" if the AFL have indeed increased the limit to three)

Hopefully the Club will Update us at some stage as to Moniz-Wakefield's Status

Quote

In addition to these six rookie-listed players, each club can include up to three additional players (now referred to as Category B rookies) on its Rookie List provided the player either:

How did Lindsay and Langford get 3 year deals? I thought it was 2 when you get drafted?

Rule Change this year... 3 Years for picks under 20, 2 years for the rest :)

To clarify the rookie tenure rules.

Somewhere on DL it was assumed the new 5 year/10 AFL game rule does not apply to B rookies.  I've found nothing from the AFL/AFLPA nor any club to support that assumption.

The assumption was that, because a media report listed AMW as an A rookie, the new rule doesn't/can't apply to B rookies.  That 'logic' doesn't compute as there may be other reasons AMW is no longer a B rookie eg because the club needed two B rookie spots to draft Andrew and Mentha.  The status change for AMW would be a timing coincidence not because the new rule doesn't apply to B rookies.

so I am unsure if this is new and we can have 3 B rookies?,

either the 2023 CBA is out of date, or the AFL website is out of date...

The AFL often do not date their releases so should be used with caution. That link is very old; definitely pre covid.

The 2023 CBA is the current 'bible'.   It runs until 2027 with adjustments as and when announced.

Can someone clarify if we can list Noah Yze? Surprised no one has asked JT.

As AMW appears to be an A Rookie the answer no, as we don't have a list spot.

Can anyone confirm if we have a full list, or do we still have room for potential SSP or mid season spots?

We only have 1 Cat B rookie spot available

Agree. We didnt have a pick in the rookie draft which meant our a list is full. If we had a spot we cpuld have passed to keep it free.

We are rolling with 43 players this year including mentha as our sole cat b.

Complete buffoon when it comes to these things but we lost 8 players and only gained 6…. So if we only have one spot left I’m utterly confused

The buffoons are the AFL that have so many vague rules around player categories and list management.

Your count is correct for end of season changes.

The difference is Kentfield was our notional 'replacement' for Brayshaw in the mid-season draft.  Brayshaw remained on the list giving an overall list of 45, one over the allowed 44.

So now we need to 'lose' one more than we gain to get back to 44.

happy to be called out on this for being wrong or jumping too early, but i like to document my thoughts a year out and see how close i think to the actual list managers

for EOS 25

Retire: Melksham, McDonald

Delist: Hore, Fullarton, Billings, Howes, AMW, Sestan

Laurie to move down to rookie list too with a 2026 contract

McDonald could get another 1yr, Campbell could be 1 and done

Feel like Howes, AMW and Woey are playing for one maybe two spots on the list, woey the most versatile

Could also see a McAdam pay out like Hunter this year, its not beyond us to make these moves

Agree with a number of players Turner  but not on Howes and AMW believe these two are in our long term plans as is Woey but time will tell.

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
