Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

So Riewoldt and Watts are as talented as each other with the same predispositions in physicality and courage? With the same god given endurance and marking ability?

@Dr. Gonzo - the difference between a Watts and Riewoldt or a Kennedy and a Viney are intangible and tangible.

The tangible differences between Watts and Riewoldt are so marked and numerous that the difference in intangibles don’t even register. Don’t matter.

The intangibles that Watts didn’t live up to - commitment, application, ‘giving a [censored]’ - only meant he didn’t become a better version of Jack Watts.

Not some delusional fever dream that he shat away the chance for us to have a great of the game play for us.

Yes, he was taken to task on more than one occasion around training efforts (or so we have been told and I accept it) but this seems to have evolved into a narrative where 24/7 he didn't give a shite. I call absolute BS on that. It's keyboard warrior stuff where judgements are made from hearsay. I have watched enough live games of Jack Watts to feel disappointed with the out of kilter assessments about him - maybe they are a reflection of the world we are now in.

I just want to say that Jack did not come back to pre season under done, in fact he came back in the same shape as 2016 which was good, he had a great year. His 3 k time trial was his best ever, you can check it.  All his other figures were good too.  He came back with blue hair which was a mistake and put him I all the papers which [censored] off Goody.  He went to Byron on a Tuesday night, Wednesday was a day off, got back Wednesday night. Missed no rehab. He did extra sessions every week.  It's a furphy.  Jack is not like Viney, Jones or Macca, he doesn't live breath football 24/7, he is a normal person like 80 percent of the team but he loves MFC and will be sad to go but he will.  I don't know how many of you would have thought we would dream of trading Jack after round 13 this year

He had a very good 2016 and the first half of 2017 before injury. The Collingwood QB game was a highlight of his career and the Dees’ last 11-15 years. I think he should stay, commit and progress. I’ll be disappointed if he goes to the bodies in the barrels area just because he had a few beers.

People recall that time on the wing with some distortion.

3 Collingwood players were intent on roughing him up ,which is true, it's a game for bullies if we are honest.

What happened was that he drew a free kick through their stupidity.

He was not hurt and indeed had a slight smile as he took the kick

It's funny how people repeat things they think to be something when they are only partially so.

It was a time when the club was a revolving [censored] house of mercenaries drifting through without aim or purpose.

What I like about Jack is that he became an extremely loyal man-and I am a very loyal person myself.

Goodwin is just a foreigner to me at this stage and I think presentation night was somewhat of a shock to him at how much our Jesus ,I mean Jack ,is loved after his 9 year input, no matter how inconsistent.

If Marlon is Biffen I understand your love for Jack. Say no more.

I love Jack for other reasons: I think he plays good footy for the MFC.

Having said that if he's gotta go, he's gotta go.

As Iggy said, you've got to deal with the real.

The 'real' is that Watts has become a scapegoat, a scapegoat who I'm afraid may come back to haunt us.

I wish him luck. I like his attitude to life.

( There is also a part of me which acknowledges he's probably never had to struggle to achieve anything. That's probably the craw which has made Goodwin come unstuck. Goodwin had to fight for everything. A classic case of the street-fighting man's envy of the naturally talented. Also a classic case of the differences in the priorities of human beings. To some mere mortals AFL or any other sport is not everything. There's also the beach, the love of being with friends, the sheer joy of being talented and able to enjoy life. I doubt Mr JW has enjoyed much of his time under the scrutiny of the likes of Demonland supporters, let alone the scrutiny of the Goodwin's of the world. )

Agreed.  But appears to be a lost cause.  Kent had a few beers, copped a suspension and stays!! Obviously on less coin!!

Really ? Getting dropped in the final round of 2015 wasn't a rocket? Getting dropped late this year wasn't a rocket? Getting dropped for the pre season games wasn't a rocket? FFS Watts even dropped himself a few years ago.

selective memory...

No that wasn’t a Rocket. He was still the number one boy.

Now he is getting the rocket

now he knows he is out of luck. It’s either Hard Work or he walks away....

He needs to go for the hard work option or he’ll be remembered poorly.

personally, i'd still like jack to stay, work his butt off and win back a regular spot in the side

i do however wonder if there isn't something else going on (or went on) that we don't know about. maybe, maybe not, maybe we will never know. i also can't but think it could have been handled better. seems a lot of cutting off the nose to spite the face

still we must all move on. four more days at most

I say this with the utmost sincerity and without wanting to sound cruel,

Sadly for the Ablett family, the real reason for Gary Jnr to return to Geelong no longer exists.

I wonder what emphasis Gary Jnr places in his return now given this sad happening?

I also recall Roos being heavily invested in "player welfare" and note Goodwin's apparent lack of concern in this area.

Call bullshyte on that, there is now more reason for Gary Jr to come home, the family needs to be together and he needs to be there for his family

We had to live through the machinations of 186 - and the politics of that day nearly killed the club.

I hope to high heaven this isn't political or personal.

Like most of us, I just don't know. Some on here seem to suggest they know stuff...

Me - I think he's improved, and I wouldn't trade him

I totally agree Biff. I've never understood the mythology which has developed around that tackle. I saw it on the day and a number of times since on replay, (as recently as about 6 weeks ago).  As well as posters on here, the same story about the effect on him keeps getting thrown up by commentators in the media when reflecting on why Watts hasn't met expectations.

Even if it had been a brutal, bone jarring tackle, it's pretty cleat that Jack Watts has the character to have easily got over it.

I'd swing it around and name it differently.

FB: DBJ, Hombsch, Jonas
HB: Hartlett  Howard  Broadbent
C: Polec  Rockliff  Westhoff
HF: Motlop  Watts  Boak
FF: Neade  Dixon  Wingard
Foll: Ryder  Wines  R. Gray
Int: SPP Ebert  S Gray  Pittard

Backs: Clurey, Houston, Austin, Bonner
Mids: Atley, Amon, Drew
Forwards: Johnson, Marshall
Ruck: Frampton

Interesting list. Lots of young defenders who will have to play at times and backline seems the weakness.

Midfield and forward they have so much flexibility and should be able to play a really good ball movement style of game plan. The question mark will be if they or will they defend.

I thought Goody's postmortem observation that we started to fall away as a team from Round 15 is interesting as it also coincided with Jacks loss of form and him being dropped to the VFL...

How much can a team trust and rely on a player who went missing in one of the most crucial periods for the MFC in the last 5 years?

Why did he go missing? He was injured, he had 2 bulging discs and a hammy

Not a bad team at all,  it makes me wonder  what kind of money their top half dozen are on when they can fit Rockliff and Motlop in there.

I agree, they’d be a lot weaker if they had no Jack Watts and had to play Westhoff forward, Clurey and Howard showed a bit this year and Hombsch and Broadbent can be excellent. So many options through the middle.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
