Post Match Discussion - Round 12

Demonland

Awesome win. In that second half we looked like a team that deserves a top 6 spot or better. Trac and watts so good - and Jones fought the good fight for us in the first half when we struggled in the stoppages. Then viney in the second half was awesome - I think he was a big factor in our turn around today. For a first live game at the g in years - it doesn't get much better than that!

Omac went from playing like Tom Gillies in the 1st half to Matty Scarlett in the 2nd half. What a turn around, i was very critical of him.

Harmes and Jetta won some critical one on ones that got it going forward for us.

Tracca loves a big stage as does Watts. How many times has Watts kicked clutch goals in close games??

I did the same last year as they were walking out before the game ended. Except i also sang the Collingwood theme song (very slowly with as much satire as I could). [censored] them off even more.

Great win.

I have not missed seeing a QB match live for years but had to this weekend as i had to go away for a basketball tournament. Got back just in time to watch it on TV.

I never go on DL during a match, usually because i'm at the game, but stupidly did so today at the end of the fist quarter, albeit very briefly. Predicable bagging of Omac for his two errors blind clearing the ball with rushed kicks from deep inside 50 (on his left foot both times interestingly). No mention at all of his other excellent defensive efforts in the quarter. An i wonder if there were comments about the defensive errors by Salem and Frost x 2 that cost us goals. Or the woeful kick inside 50 by Trac that cost us an easy golas. Or t later in the game the three other times in the game we blindly kicked it from deep inside our 50 (Jones, Lewis and someone else) that didn't come back purely because of luck (one of those times because of a brilliant spoil from TMac halved a contest he should have lost)

I had to laugh because at one point he took a defensive pack mark and one of the bone headed commentators said it 'fell it into his lap'. Not geez, he read it well, unlike the other players flying for it. I wondered if DL had somehow infiltrated the commentary box such was the obvious confirmation bias.

Omac was excellent today. As i have said many times i acknowledge his weaknesses but some of the comments on this site about him not being up to AFL standard, wouldn't get a game in any other team, woeful, etc etc are so of the mark they border on weird. As i have also said many times the coaching team keep picking him and that can only mean one thing. they rate him.

Actually two those things. Those that say he should not be in the side  because he is not up to it are wrong. Plain wrong. They had the opportunity to drop him this week by bringing in Spencer (or Wagner for that matter). Many argues they should have. A season defining game with a top 8 position on the line. With only one big forward in the magpie side. But they didn't. What does that say about how highly they rate OMac?

And OMac repaid that faith and proved his knockers wrong.   And by by the by may miss next week because he hurt his abductor near the end of the 3rd or near the start of the last and played under severe duress.

I would've hoped those who read the interview with Matt Jones in the Murdoch rag this week would think twice about angry, sometimes personal attacks on ANY player. But I guess there will always be thoughtless vilification of players who are giving nothing but their best by gutless posters.

A bit disappointing that this club once again needs some form of external motivation to fire up, but I am still glad that they dug deep for my milestone 2000th post. :)

I'll let Jack and Oscar chair me off. Or across the head. Whichever they see fit.

Nah I let everyone know about "typical Howe mark of the year then turns it over"

I was absolutely surrounded by ferals in the AFL members today, one threatened to hit me, another elderly gent was cracking the sads on the way out having a go at me while I belted out the song at the top of my lungs. Took me back to the good ol days.

I normally sit in the Olympic stand, but got free tickets to the AFL members on level 2A today. I was absolutely staggered at the Collingwood fans up there. Almost constantly whinging about the umpiring or something one of their players had done. I honestly don't know why you would go to the footy if you can't enjoy the good things your team does, and just focus on the negatives. I actually felt uncomfortable sitting there they were so aggressive and rabid. Nice to get free tickets, but that will be the last time I sit up there.

Worth watching the Watts interview on the site re reaction and instructions from the coaches at half-time. We're in good hands.

Everyone should be.  He knows what success is, regardless of whether or not he plays a stinker.  Everyone has them.  You would have to be an idiot to ignore his instructions and advice during game day.

A few notes from the stats:

  • Jack Watts also laid 4 tackles today. Plus the efforts at both ends of the Ground. Everyone is excited with the return of Jesse, but having Watts as the 2nd or 3rd tall forward will be the big bonus , with Tracc as the biggest small fwd, we have got the icing on the cake.
  • Love Hannan's endeavour
  • OMac 2nd half in particular was great. Evn in the first half a lot of mistakes made by others get overlooked or get labelled onto OMac. Showed a lot og mental guts today.
  • TMac only took 1 mark today, so the wuicker we get him out of the ruck the better we will become. This not to downgrade his effort in the ruck where he operated as a huge midfielder rather than as a ruckman.
  • Grundy was close to best on ground today because he gave the C'wood midfielders a free ride in the 1st half but Tom's bullocking efforts around the sdtoppagers enabled our mids to get back into the game.
  • If only Jayden Hunt lowered his eyes , because opposition sides have their pants down when he carried the ball into the 50m area. Just needs to assess his options better. See Point 1 above.
  • Nathan Jones will retire as one of the best players NEVER to have been an AA purely because he is not fashionable. If ever a player has been loyal to MFC, he has.  Well done.
  • Jordan Lewis provides structure. Stats wise today was not one of his brightest, but he knows the areas to cover and marshalls people very well. We need the old blokes in Nathan, Bernie, Jordan and Cam to let our younger brigade play an exciting brand of footy. Today's game was a terrific contest which ever way you look at it.

Umps helped us in the end.

Missed a hell of a lot of incorrect disposal throughout the game, both ways.

About time for us to get a bit of "luck" especially after the Norf disgrace.

Even Oscar did some good things in the second half

He looked mature and composed after half time.......to all his many critics, he does have it in him.  Patience needed.  Could this be his "breakout (half)game"?

Why this team refuses to play 4 quarters is beyond me. Do they just expect to turn up and for it to fall our way?

Do we expect that we will still work our way back into games when we are behind? (we have been in every game this year)

For the sake of your supporters' physical and mental health, how about playing good football right from the get go then continuing to do so for the full 4 quarters Dees?

A win's a win, but i reckon i have had my life shortened by 5-10 years this season.

Young team, playing without forward structure due to injury to our two best talls........we managed to grab a win when it looked unlikely.......take it and enjoy it.

Yes.....frustrating the inconsistency, but then which club has put 4 quarters together on a regular basis this year?

Just reported that Oscar carried a hip injury for the last three quarters. Might not be OK for next week.

All the more kudos to him.  Maturing well.

Kudos to Goodwin.

He said at the half time break that we were being obliterated in the midfield, around the ball etc.

Yet again, he pulled off some half time masterstokes!  The main one being putting TMc in the ruck.  Masterstroke!  We started winning clearances and turned the game.

Throwing the team around a bit at half time gets the opp coach by surprise.

Coll played better in the first half but Goodwin outcoached Buckley!

Nice change to see a Demon coach with plans b,c and d.

To all those in this thread going on about the umpiring I recommend you go back and watch these moments:

Early last qtr Collingwood (Howe?) player takes possession at the top of our goalsquare runs, does a don't argue, gets tackled, tries to kick, misses ball, definite holding the ball to Melbourne, not paid, certain goal missed.

Treloar taken by Viney in a tackle drops ball on ground, no disposal, HTB missed, picked up by Collingwood goes inside for Collingwood goal.

Levi Greenwood drops a mark in the centre square, not infringed, tackled properly by Viney, ball heading forward for Melbourne, either the dropped mark or a free paid and a FIFTY paid to Collingwood. Pies score when Dees would've had a certain score.

First quarter Watts taken out in a marking contest on the Wing, pies player takes the ball while Scharenberg barrels him over with what looked like a tackle in a marking contest without his eyes on the ball. Pies goal, no free for Melbourne.

There were many other holding the ball frees missed for us, soft high tackles paid to them at crucial moments and many other moments.

The Hibberd and Hunt ones should've been HTB, but they missed plenty to us as well. Also both managed to hit the ball so the argument is whether they threw it first and that has barely been paid for 5 weeks. Should've been HTB and we got the rub of the green on those two but so did they, many times, especially in the first half.

It was a magnificent gutsy win and to claim the umpires won it for us is ludicrous.

great game Dees! Being on Gawn, Hogan and the doggies!!!

Edit: Not to mention Oscar perfectly bodying a contested mark on the wing to have it reversed then a pies player does the exact same thing in our forward fifty.. NO FREE!!

Good summation - many HTB and incorrect disposal on both sides.

At least we weren't screwed for once.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
