Sam Reid

Recommended Posts

Forgot to mention but Jay Clarke mentioned on the Sunday Rub that Melbourne along with Collingwood and Richmond are circling Sam Reid from Sydney.

Is a free agent so won't cost draft picks.

Thoughts?

Could be a handy depth player either forward or back.

Who knows if Garland will be any good after his ACL. Reid would certainly bring great experience but can't help but think his best years are well in the past

edit

you know what, scrap that last part. Didn't realise that he's only 25. Get him

Injury prone player that shows glimpses, has talent but where would he fit in our team?

forward - Hogan , Watts, Reid??

back - Frost, TMac , Reid

pushes Omac / Weid out...

would be competing with Weideman for the key forward spot.

Nah, he'd be competing with Pedo as depth next year and if Cam keeps going with similar outings to yesterday's, I think the need for Reid will be obsolete.

Very good player when up & about...

Could play forward or back and give a chop out in the ruck.

Well I think we will be in the market for a tall forward at trade time this year, whether it's Reid who knows.

Wants to play in a premiership, does he?

would want to see what he is like as a 2 way runner.  Any player we pick up has to fit - and enhance- the system.

he is a boy from Bright, and Collingwood have has brother.  Go home factor would suggest they would be in the lead for his services.

Would be perfect as the second tall forward for Hogan and second ruck to give Max a breather. He's the kind of player we are looking for structurally. It would mean Weiderman can develop at the right pace instead of being throw in and not having an impact when getting a game. He can build strength and gain confidence in the VFL without pressure to come in and be number 1 tall target when he is still a teenager.

Reid could also swing down to key defense if needed due to injury. As a free agent he costs us no draft pick so at worst he is good depth. Good target for us IMO

It's always nice to hear our name is in the mix.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with key position depth. I'd be all for it as it would take the pressure off the likes of Weideman and OMac.

Reid has shown some ok signs this year. Also, 25 is still very young for a key position player.

Hard to know where he'd fit if we've got faith in Weeds coming on quickly in the next few years.

If the Swans offer up the money to keep Reid I wonder if we wouldn't be better off making a play at Tippett just for a couple of years as a Pedersen upgrade and quality ruck/forward until we fix that position. Same concerns over durability but you wouldn't have to keep him for as long.

I like Weed but I doubt he's going to come on quickly.

Reid is younger and less of a f log. Suits us more.

Great mark and kick.

Not a fan of his athleticism and ground work and this mitigates his value in the modern game.  This is why he struggles to consistently influence games.

Interestingly I see Weideman as developing into a similar type.

As a free agent, I definitely think he's worth the risk. If he could get continuity of games, he's a massive upgrade on where Weid or O Mac will be at next year.

Let's not forget that we haven't got Hogan locked away for life, and at the end of 2019, he may look to go home. We'd be derelict not to factor that into our recruiting and drafting strategy.

Our key position depth is basically non existent at present, so I'd be interested in anyone who can give us a boost in that respect.

Is Reid the best option? Not sure, particularly given his injury history, but his best football is very good.

I don't see Weideman being a regular contributor until at least 2019, so there is plenty of football to be played before then.

Tippett? He ticks a lot of boxes, but he goes missing far too often. You'd certainly want the Swans to pay half his salary.

I wouldn't go that far.  We're missing Gawn, Spencer, Hogan and T. Smith (third tall forward) and we went alright on the weekend.  There is certainly room for improvement, but it's not as bad as some may make out.

As for Sam Reid, I'm torn.  If he came for free then I'd be happy to take him on, although if there is a fight for his services then that may push his price up higher in terms of dollars.  His injury history doesn't exactly fill me with confidence though, and I could see us recruiting him and then having him go down with injuries early on.

One of the most athletic forwards I have seen. Doesn't necessarily translate into being an effective footballer, but in Sam Reid's case it translates into being an above average forward, and a part time ruck man - exactly what we need. Reid could ruck full time if he wanted, has been pinch hitting in the ruck with Tippett out, and regularly beating established ruck man. Very good player.

What is his injury history?  Recurring soft tissue, or impacts?

I don't know enough about him - does he offer as much as Sunday's version of Pedo?

As far as I'm aware, like his brother, it a mixture of bad luck (impact) and soft tissue.

His strongest asset is his marking and was seen as one of the most promising KPF in the league a few years back.  Is currently seeing out a five year deal that Sydney signed him onto which is indicative of how the Swans viewed him.

He is largely an unknown due to his recurring injuries and not having a good run at it since Tippet, then Franklyn arrived.  When he's on, he's very, very good IMHO.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
