Injury update from the Club 08/03:  vandenBerg to miss start of season

Is one or two Intra-club runs with Casey sufficient to get some of these guys like Kent sufficiently match hardened to face up against the Saints.  Doubtful in my view.  We could maybe get away with one only (Garlett?), I reckon .

Like others have said, there are injuries and there are injuries.

Not great for the players concerned, not great for depth, but barely a ripple on the best 22.

Hopefully Kent can play in at least one of the remaining two games (JLT or Casey) and mount a claim for round one.

given his injury history, i would be very conservative with kent and give him plenty of time.

The Demonland sniffer dogs were all over this one, with the lack of any updates coming out of the club.

Disappointing outcome, but not altogether unexpected.

Ankle last year; heel this year.  Poor guy

Plus a 4 week hammy in mid 2015 and an ankle in late 2015.

Feels as though injuries are going force him out of AFL.

Hope he gets an injury free run at it after this one as he's played some good games when fit. I don't necessary think he's in the best 22 every week but around the mark.

Great. Just great...

Can't take a trick this guy.

Agreed! He's certainly had his fair share of bad luck.

He's a bloody good bullocking player potentially. Love to see him have a consistent go at it.

Love his work to  date. I imagine that he  can still do a fair  bit of pool work to  keep his aerobic  capacity on par

This is not perhaps as bad as seems.. Seeing him limp off at the intraclub, I though the pre season ankle surgery has not done the job. It appears to not be the old ankle issue.

Hopefully this is just bad luck and he will be ripe for mid season.

It's a shame to see him injured again; while his output was down last year I suspect that was more about him being injured than a lack of talent or ability, and I was hoping he would get a clean run at it as he's held in high regard by the FD.

I also noticed in the article that Jetta is fit again, hence him missing the JLT series.  He will probably get a run with Casey to get his fitness up, but it's clear Goodwin is looking to play the guys who are match fit and ready to go.

"Versatile defender Sam Frost is another in extreme doubt for the club's round one clash with St Kilda at Etihad Stadium due to a toe injury"

So I guess his season is over again.

AVB and JKH seem cursed.

Maybe these three initial nicknames are a curse in themselves - like JFK?

Not sure that it's quite over but wasn't he kept out of action for a good part of 2015 (his first year at the club) by a toe injury?

I think that's the joke WJ. Frost's mysterious 426 toe injury that spanned the whole of 2015.

Here's a belated injury update from Misso:  Injury update: David Misson

The only longer termers (not mentioned) who I can think of are Vanders, JKH and Wags.

Not too bad going into Round 1, but match fitness is clearly an issue for a few.

and touch considering Hibberd has played one match in 18 months and Kent would barely have touched a footy this year.

This weekend's Casey game is a very, very important match for the MFC.

The other info from this is that Frost is a definite out for Round 1 as he'll be playing for Casey that weekend.  I'll be interested to see how the back line shapes up - does Jetta play the third tall or does Garland get the call up?

Id take Garland against the Saints, purely from a height/spring perspective @Wiseblood

I'm guessing Pedo playing back isn't an option. Garland against Bruce, Members, Paddy or Roo (when he goes forward) sends shivers down my spine. I think the Saints will take turns isolating Garland and Omac. If we give their forwards as much latitude as last time at Darklands it won't matter which.

Really need our mids and running half forwards to tighten up and pressure their mids from streaming forwards. If we do that and deliver forward with any advantage then we win.

I still suspect that if he gets through this week at Casey Smith will surprise many and come straight in as the third tall for round 1. I saw enough of him in JLT 1 and 2 to back him over Garlands JLT 3.

His JLT 1 was great, JLT was pretty average. If he plays well I'd think of pulling the trigger but if he doesn't look that impressive then it would be a fair gamble.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
