Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Confirmation bias is only valid when the info is confirmed as being true.

Confirmation bias is seeking information that confirms your existing views, while rejecting information that contradicts them. It's not about confirming information, it's about confirming your own views.

Whether those views are true or not doesn't come into it.

There's a lot of back pedalling going on...not too many apologies.

A lot more has been made of this than needed to be not because of any Watts outrage but because of the hand wringers who are unable to process anything that doesn't align with their long held beliefs.

Objectivity is a rare trait.

Have you listened to the Max Gawn interview? I'm paraphrasing but says something along the lines of Jack Watts would be in the starting 22 on talent but at this stage was unable to get into the 24 man side. Then goes onto to say Weid has been training well and was picked as a result.

You don't need to be a genius to read between the lines.

I also heard this

"'Wattsy' has come a long way in the seven years that I've known him and he's probably in the best headspace he's been in for a long time.

"So I don't think it's an attitude problem this year. The Jack Watts we saw last year will be the Jack Watts we see this year, we just didn't see it on the weekend."

As well as discussion on experimenting with 2 true ruck men during the practice games.

There are many ways to read the situation. Could be attitude, could be his hand in a brace, could be trialling new/young players before R1, could be a mismatch against the Bullies backs, and so on. Might even be a number of these or more.

The only certainty is the gleeful bias of the op here.

Ok with what's going on it's important to remember a couple of things. 1) it's pre-season so reporters are trying to drum up stories to fill the papers. 2) every year there seems to a certain player at each club that's given a sort of "position not set in stone" kick up the bum, most of the time they are in there round 1. 3) there are two practice matches left and I'd be shocked if Watts doesn't play at least one of them, he will be given an opportunity to prove himself.

Jack had such a great year last year, I would hope he'd want to build on it.

What (pun intended) I'd like to hear from a Goody presser,

"We understand there are certain oxygen thieves in the media and on certain supposed supporter sites. We've decided to give this non story no oxygen, next question"?

I really do hope the media read this site.

After having watched T Mac's interview, it's clear that there's something he hasn't done that the coaches have asked of him. Perhaps there was something up on the camp etc that he failed to do, or a standard it seems that everyone is asked of that he didn't meet.

It's only fair by Goodwin to give the guys (and there's quite a few who can play that half forward role) a chance a head of Jack to prove their worth who did everything that was asked of them. Jack doesn't get a different set of standards just because he is in our top tier of players. I don't think it was a major thing, but, if you're trying to be consistent with your playing group, then it's unfair to put jack ahead of others purely on talent.

Let's all hope Jack has now taken that on board (which seems like he has based on the interviews) and can have another good season.

I have seen training three times since start of pre- season.

Jack Watts has trained hard, trained well and is a class and a half above ALMOST anything we have on the list! PERIOD!

I told you all why he was not picked on another thread. The club is unhappy with his preseason form and attitude. Simple as that. There are no walk up starts at the MFC anymore. Gawn is a leader. He knows why. Not going to throw him under the bus, is he? But he made it perfectly clear that nothing other than blokes doing harder yards over preseason had caused the 'selection shock'.

Well, I hope who ever passed on the news to your source gets cut off at the knees. I'm sure PJ is ecstatic about the leak ....

Whilst it's sometimes interesting to get the inside scoop, with the addition of "Chinese Whispers" it really doesn't do the club a whole lot of good.

Gawn intimated that VDB and Weideman deserved the opportunity last Saturday  to see whether they could edge a round 1 gig ahead of Watts.

Based on both of their performances, Watts doesn't have a worry in the world.

Watts will be a key part of our rise up the ladder both short and long term. He was our best forward last year IMO Had more impact than Hogan, set up heaps of goals, helped in the ruck and nearly topped the goal kicking for the club. If he continues on from last year he'll be near All Australian quality.

Weiderman has the potential to play an important role long term also as a key forward paired with Hogan. He's still building up his body and learning the game at senior level.

Vandenburg is delist material in a year or two. He's done great for someone off the rookie list, but he's a depth player and won't be part of our serious tilt, in a similar way to the Matt Jones and Dean Terlichs of the past.

Watts has nothing to worry about if they're his competition for a spot. If I was him and the coach gave those guys games ahead of me when I was fit and ready to perform I'd ask for a trade.

Those two weren't preferred to Watts because they are better but because they've put in the work. Vanders has questions over his skill level but I don't doubt his work rate and physicality, especially with tackling. Can you imagine how good Watts would be if he attacked the ball and then chased and tackled like Vanders does? Because to me that's what an AA level player would be.

Guys Sam Mitchell and Bontempelli didn't play either on the weekend... Where are the media stories about them not being starters despite not being injured??

Absolute joke this is seeing light of day. Poor handling by the club and Goodwin to not get on the front foot to squash the heresy being bandied about in the media too. Really disappointing from the club actually considering the medias history with Watts.

Jack will be fine come next week or Round 1. In fact, he'll be better than fine. He'll be one of our best players as always.

It's pre-season and the speculation about Watts is frankly insane. Up until last year I was no fan of Watts but he rose to a very good level last year and could well do so again this year. If the coaches have an issue with Watts then let them deal with it without ridiculous speculation.

It is my experience that the players know exactly what the club expects of them. They get minute level detail. IF Watts was left out for a reason, he and every other player would know why. The club doesn't need to come out and make a statement about it. The fact that other players that did media like Gawn and TMac were asked about it is not like the club 'sending' them out to deal with the Watts' question.

Let the coaches do their job.

The thing for me with VandenBerg is the 'default' chf role he plays whilst also being able to run through the midfield. He's built like the proverbial brick outhouse and isn't afraid to throw his weight around.

The coaching dept love his work rate and when he plays well we tend to go okay.

I'd argue that when Watts plays well we tend to win - he's our barometer.

I go a lot further.  I think the poster that "leaked" it should be banned.  I've got no idea if this is where the media got the story or whether it was from another source but on the assumption that Leoncelli_36 was given inside information he's hurt the Club and the player. If the MFC had wanted it public they would have announced it.

There are people on this site privy to confidential and potentially harmful information who show good sense and don't big note themselves by posting it.  We have a poster that didn't show good judgement and has hurt the club.  He's shown he's more interested in promoting himself than helping the club.

I'd take away his ability to do that here.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
