His brother looked just as inept early in his career so I won't put a line thru him but he can't play in the seniors atm. 

Doesn't have elite speed, read it well or composure to get away with playing underweight so until he puts on weight, he is a liability.

It is thanks to Garland and Dunn's inability to play defensive roles consistently and to a satisfactory standard which has seen them in and and out of the side. Dunn was again overlooked on the weekend and the coaches favoured O-Mac to take the other key defensive post alongside his brother and Garland. The fact that the coaches chose to bring Oscar in (who was hardly banging the door down at Casey) over Dunn says much more about what is going on with Dunn and also highlights our lack of key position depth. 

Due to Dunn and Garland's fall from grace coupled with an obvious lack of key position defensive depth playing at Casey, we've seen that this is the only area of the ground whereby players have been promoted from Casey to our senior side without necessarily having to 'play out of their skin'. Wagner and O-Mac are both examples. Compare this to our midfield and forward-line where we clearly have some great depth building and you'll find that players like Petracca and ANB have had to play to an extremely high standard for a number of weeks to get a look in. In seasons past, they would have both been playing well before their form at Casey warranted a senior call up.

I can understand why O-Mac was given a game in this case based on what I've just said, just as I understood why Wagner was promoted earlier in the season. 

However, it's clear as day that last weekend he was out of his depth. He wasn't ready. He was overawed. You cannot argue that. I don't care that he still managed 18 disposals and three rebound 50's. We won by 63 points. We were in control, and Brisbane's ball movement was awful. Do you watch the game man? Or do you just consistently defend players time after [censored] time like Saty?

I will be absolutely gobsmacked if Oscar keeps his spot this week.

 

Dunn doesn't follow team rules. He tends to blaze away or try and do too  much. Garland is a dud, something I know you agree with. I'd be playing Frost and not OMac. We should be offering Hurley the [censored] world. He would make us a 3 win better side overnight.

I think OMac's actually got good pace and mobility, I think like TMac those will be his qualities in due course.

I look forward to seeing him get another crack later this year or next year when he's had the chance to develop those traits in the VFL.

Dunn it would seem is not playing to instructions. Plus the footy dept might be keen to play tomorrow's players to develop them...

 

Having said that Oscar has a lot of work to do. Far too early to write him off but gee he looks a long way from it at this stage to me

Irrespective of his performance I wish folks would give the young kid a break. He is a kid and trying his best. However, a la Harmes and others he should be developing at Casey not in the senior team. Ron, I think Dunn is gone. We miss his beautiful kicking and that hurts us. However, he seems overweight and looks very slow both in mind and body. He is definitely not the future or even a player for next season based on current form. Is he better than our other options at the moment, now that is the question. Maybe but he needs to lift his game.

First and foremost though, the midfield needs to show up!

Gawn played ok, but early on their midefield and Trengove had the better which gave them first use. They were reading Gawn, and Trengove played real smart at ground level. Viney wasn't himself, clearly rattled early on given his frustration and will clearly put pressure on the team over the next several weeks as a result which is most disappointing.

The concerning thing that is hard to teach is his lack of intensity. He's like Cale Morton out there and just seems scared a lot of the time. 

I thought he did well early, certainly better than last week and it was good for his confidence, agree with the time and strength - I expect all areas of his game tio improve much like his brother did. I don't expect him to play the next block of games, as I stated last week. But who knows now, given Roosy's failures at the selection table in a few of the fixtures.

I wouldn't play him in the next couple of weeks. But he needs to come in now and then to develop into the go to player we need down back.

O Mac wasn't as bad this week.  Still woefully underprepared for AFL footy though - but that doesn't stop our coaches!  

It's ridiculous to have so many inexperienced defenders in all at once.  Both Wagner & Omac can't physically win a one-on-one so we're getting sliced up in multiple ways.  They both have a special knack of coming off second best somehow.  Wagner looks about as assured as a mountain goat with no legs.

The speed of which the ball has entered the defensive 50 dosent help.

If our forwards and mids aren't putting on pressure even SOS in the 90s wouldnt be able to stop the goal flow.

the amount of time that he's getting on the ground (yes, i am aware players need to build experience, but jayzus christ he is bad) definitely highlights the lack of depth and NEED for a solid experienced defender come trade period.. although we need outside speed and a few more mid's, surely a good defender is right near the top of our priorities.. and the sooner the coaches recognise that this new system isn't and hasn't worked the better! i love the attacking style, but don't care for these easy goals over the top and through the guts..

I don't understand how other teams like Hawthorn can develop players like Sicily in their VFL team for years but we are in such a rush to develop Oscar McDonald in the AFL team when for the first time we don't need to.

Totally agree. Oscar needs at least 12 months more in the VFL, taking the opposition's number one forward each week.

Then, and only then, should he be considered for AFL selection.

He has only just turned 20. He can have five years developing at Casey if he needs it (this being his second), and still have a ten year AFL career.

Why should he take the number 1 forward? Is that the role he's going to be playing in the AFL? 

The players have different roles. Playing on the number 1 forward every week may well limit his development, since it would only expose him to a very narrow part of the game.
