We need more long term guaranteed best 22.  We don't need more Bugg or Kennedy or slightly better versions of them.  We need very good players who will push Vandenberg and Garlett down to depth.  We should be chasing Mitchell and Hartlett.  We have enough talented youth coming through.  I'd be happy to put next year's 1st on the table.  It's self-fulfilling, with Mitchell and/or Hartlett in our team we finish higher.

Fifty 5 I am somewhat surprised about your constant banging on about Hartlett. He is extremely inconsistent and even at his best the cost versus output just doesn't stack up for me. Aside from that I am not entirely sure what role he plays he is a mid yes and reasonably rounded but not a great inside or a great outside. Nice penetrating kick but not necessarily effective. Taking players like Hartlett for overs smacks of the Richmond and North approaches of recent years that seem to make you look better but not set you up to go all the way.

Mitchell on the other hand I get but the cost versus adding another inside mid (granted a bloody good one) just doesn't make sense.

Jeez people on here overrate Melksham. What are his credentials as a backman?

Hunt was still a prospect when Melksham was targeted and Wagner was brought in for insurance.

He's an upgrade on Wagner anyway but the back flanks will be a contested position with Hibberd also now on his way.

Whilst there will be contest for the half back position, I think the expectation is that this will allow us to use some of these guys in advanced attacking positions. ie. It's likely Hunt or Melksham or Salem will play on a wing. This means we'll push out some of our fringers like Bugg and even Harmes. And if those two guys improve their game's, they'll put pressure on that half back or wing position and give us some happy headaches.

I'm beginning to think we'll need to strengthen our half forward role players, as Kennedy, Harmes, Garlett yoyoed in and out of the team this year. Kent kicked goals but was his usual wildly inconsistent self (which still makes him a question mark for mine). This is an area of the ground that needs new personnel. At least, better competition for spots from legitimate AFL players.

I wonder if we'll look at GWS or GCS small forwards/hapf forwards?

I know he's recently re-signed, and he may not have been gettable, but I would have loved to see Rohan join our squad.

Rohan Bail? I'm not so sure about that! Hopefully the doggies get up this arvo Ron, I'd reckon it would be hard living in Sydney this wk with two Syd teams in the grannie

We've tagged a small forward from the u18s as some sort of zone selection or something. If he doesn't get drafted he goes to us as our final cat b rookie.

Pretty sure the rumours of us being into Hibberd are solid.

There have been a few rumours in the media about Vardy, but that seems to have tapered off.

Last year one of the coaches said that we were done bringing in top end talent and our success would come from developing the players we now had. This would indicate a quiet trade period.

I think that's code for: we aren't a destination club, so we go the youth pathway.

i think it's code for "we don't leak".

Thats true as well, lately.   Good to see no evil, hear no evil, until the goods are produced.

* oh, do you mean onfield we don't leak, anymore.

Melbouurne used to have a very bad case of incontinence, onfield.

It depends on whether you're glass half empty or half full.  He's capable both inside and outside.  He is inconsistent but his best is match winning.  He can play HB, wing, HF and take his turn in the square.  And he has an x-factor with his kicking.

The cost?  What's this huge cost - a pick somewhere around 10?  It might be Dangerfield or Kane Lucas.

Why?

i can't understand the love for this guy, his career averages are very ordinary, from every perspective. I watched him in the final against GWS and his skill level was atrocious.

another thing is because of the way the Hogan situation sits and the raft of young players we have we can't afford to make huge offers to outside stars unless they fit perfectly.

if Jesse leaves it would be awful for the club, but the picks we got, say pick 3 and another first rounder we could offer up and try and bring in someone like Tom Mitchell and go to the draft and add another young player.

Hartlet's on massive coin so Port might find it tough to move him on.

Handy player though.

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

GAMEDAY: Rd 15 vs North Melbourne

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t
