It would be fair to say that the decline in Melbourne’s fortunes as it staggers towards the end of the season has provided us with a stark reminder of the need to replenish AFL team lists and maintain depth.

The coming months without participation in the finals will see activity in the trade, free agency and draft period that will determine whether the club’s slide continues or whether it can resurrect itself in the same way that Geelong has done this year.

But planning for list changes goes beyond the mere short term. Clubs are already looking beyond this year’s draft and on to 2025 and 2026.

As always, there are some interesting prospects coming up and the AFL’s futures trials are almost here.

Will be watching with interest! Kalani White and Tairon Ah-Mu... key position future right there.

Height is far from everything, but 1.98m for Kalani (and Tairon, plus Vic Metro's Miles Tyrer) is 'right up there', I see. Kalani has 2 of the 4 taller boys as teammates (Lions Academy- yuck) - must be something in the Queensland sun (or the rain/humidity...).

And there has been nothing to suggest with the lead up that they couldn't both be in first round contention. It is a real, this could be huge, moment for the Dees. If both end up being top line AFL footballers, that is some KPP and rucks sorted.

Watched most of the 2nd quarter. Ah-mu stands out for his size, but probably unsurprising at his height and age lacks a bit of athleticism and speed.

Agreed. I think he should model his game on Tom Hawkins. Very similar body size at the same age.

What's Ah-Mu's disposal like, please?

Didn’t get to see much in the first half tbh. He took a nice mark on the lead and just missed the goal from about 40m out. Kicking technique looked fine. Didn’t watch the second half.

1st quarter of the other game just finished. White wasn’t too involved playing full back, but he moves really well for a 198cm player.

Thanks mate.

And sounds like his old man. Who was mobile enough to play full forward on occasion.

if terms of comparative sizes / shapes / styles of player, are tom hawkins and mac andrew the closest analogies, @DistrACTION Jackson?

I think Sam De Koning would be similar to White, though I think white will be better below his knees. I don’t think he has quite the athleticism of Mac Andrew.

Early crow but how good is Cooper Duff-Tytler.  Very much in the mode of Luke Jackson. Duff-Tytler is a fantastic young basketballer who happens to also be a star ruckman in AFL. 200cms.  Weight unknown.  Competes in ruck and works as a ruck rover all over the field.  Dees might just have to keep the future 1st round draft pick for 2025 for him.  2025 draft - Dees could add him and Ah-mu and White.  Wow !!!

Someone please help me out. I do know we have (unless jibbed) dibs on Kalani White and Tairon Ah-Mu. The prospect of Ah - Mu excites me. Cooper Duff-Tytler as well or have I misread?

Think Duff-Tytler will be free to all teams

Ah-mu is an absolute unit. He will have to build a tank though I think to make it at afl level

He's  like Hymie from Get Smart. Look for number 5 Hailebury.

Cody Curtin is the one from WA recruiters will be watching 198, big tank and quick for his size. Strong and can take a contested mark. So much upside with him. Blake Kelly clean inside mid good hands and composure

Ryder Corrigan, Charlie McKinnon and Xavier Taylor stiff to miss out.

Sharp the early favourite for pick 1 while talls Ludowyke, Duff-Tytler and Emmet show great promise.

    TRAINING: Friday 6th December 2024

Some veteran Demonland Trackwatchers ventured down to Gosch's Paddock to bring you the following observations from another Preseason Training Session. WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

Demonland's own Whispering Jack was not in attendance but he kicked off proceedings with the following summary of all the Preseason Training action to date. We’re already a month into the MFC preseason (if you started counting when the younger players in the group began the campaign along with some of the more keen older heads)

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
