Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

In the modern game no one takes anyone's place, there are players rotated through different positions and there are players that are injured or lose form, based on your premise we should pick our best 22 in the first game and tell everyone else to take the rest of the year off.

Absolutely stoked that he has been retained, it's now up to him as to how long that's for.

No club has a "best 22" which plays week in and week out.

It's always changing.

Because you get things like "players out of form" and "injuries".

A club that doesn't have players that can come in to the 22 and perform has "no depth" and is at the mercy of a bad run of injuries. Look at North Melbourne. And look at the Bulldogs.

We don't say "Trengove won't take the place of Hunt, Wagner, Harmes, Salem, etc, so we don't need him in our squad." Because those guys will not play every game.

We say "Trengove is (probably) a player who can come in at the drop of a hat and perform. So he's needed on our list."

Might also have something to do with a no DH policy. May one or two on here are unfamiliar with that.

It makes Demonland such a wonderful forum for all!;)

Cheers all,

If you do have anything to do with coaching I feel for the players. Robust debate is fine YELLING FROM THE GET GO BEING THE "SMARTEST BLOKE IN THE ROOM" is a turn off. I much rather a turn on.

i wonder how many see him in the best 22? i know i don't. but do i see him as part of our best 30? absolutely!

if we get bit by the injury bug, then we need players who can come in and play a disciplined role.

jack can play multiple roles:

- as an inside mid, which is probably his best and most 'natural' position, meaning he'd replace the likes of jones, viney and tyson if they were injured

- as a half forward moving through the midfield a la vandenberg and to a certain extent brayshaw at the moment, and

- as a defensively-minded wingman, where bugg makes the side because he has greater pace than trengove does, and as it stands matt jones as first likely rotation in for that role ahead of trengove

trengove is next cab off the rank for a host of roles, and i - as well as the football staff, clearly - have faith that he's able to play the roles required with discipline and fitness required.

he has experience and a good football brain. if we simply replace him with a draftee we're getting someone who has to get to the aerobic fitness and game preparedness in less than a full preseason, as they don't join the club until basically the first week of december.

it's one more year, with some football in 2016, and a pre-season under his belt. we weren't going to get anything for him as a trade, so why not keep him and let us see what he can do.

Get with the times!

Nope Picket, you're onto it.  They don't come into.   Peter Jackson, Glenn Bartlett, Paul Roos, Goodwin, McCartney, Mahoney, Viney and everyone else currently sending this club backwards?  Stupid pricks.  Is there any chance we can get someone of your caliber down there?

The mids are rotated through the bench and it's not uncommon to have two of Viney, Jones and Tyson on the bench at one time. The same applies to the forwards, they are rotated off the bench, if a player dropped out before the game on the weekend, one of the emergencies would come in. If it is a player in a position that Jack can play in, it would be him.

I'm not sure why some on here are asking who he would replace, it's a question that has no direct answer, it depends on circumstances.

I'm happy about this, I feel that they've had a frank and honest discussion about where he's at and where the club is at and Trenners is backing himself to get back to what he can be after a full pre-season.

I wouldn't discount him but at the same time I do feel a lot of players have gone past him. I think he will be a fringe player in 2017 but who really knows. I feel it's a pretty low risk decision for both parties.

Great news. I am  a huge fan of Trenners and can't wait to see what 2017 holds for him. Interesting that the club believe the 2016 preseason was about rehwb and developmemt, and 2017 preseason is about performance.

Where will he play or where does he fit in? Jones, Viney and Tyson are well in front of him as inside midfielders,  and we have Oliver coming through also. His natural marking ability, strong tackling, and solid kicking have him inside forward 50. He definitely bumps out Vandenberg.

Pretty poor comments even by your standards.

He was always going to get another year to prove himself due to being injured for 2 years with a foot injury.

If he plays at Casey all year so what! He would not be on a lot of money anyway.

Hopefully he can prove you wrong like the McDonald's have.

Oh Ok so now he was signed for Depth eh?? Ok I understand perfectly now! Jack Trengove is in the 30-35 Core of Depth??

Still does not cut it for me!

Might be a good bloke and all but good blokes aren't going to get uis to a premiership!

Just to remind me again, how many games did he play this year??

And he is expected to improve and keep pace with a quickening game??

He was ready to go to Punt Rd was it??

Cheezus no wonder we haven't  won any  Premierships in 50 years!

Don't really understand why you're so outright upset about this decision Picket.

On the question of how many games did he play? He was emergency for many games and we had an extremely good run of injuries this year. Another year he might've played 10+ games.

Is he expected to improve and keep pace? Of course, like every player on the list. A full pre-season under his belt will no doubt assist that.

He was ready to go to Punt Rd? Yes, at our request when we put him on the market. He failed the fitness test and re-injured his foot, and we proceeded to aid in his recovery and rehab. I'm quite happy to see the club is seeing that through to the end.

Yes Picket we need depth. We need competition for spots. We need to make sure that any young player coming through the ranks next year knows there's a keen as mustard Jack Trengove nipping at his heels in case his form drops.

It's not all about the 22 blokes who are going to win the next premiership. And yes signing a one year contract allows us the use of him as depth and the possibility that he can fulfil his natural abilities and potential. As I said, I don't know why you're so emotional about it.

Good to see Picket covering himself in glory as usual. Signing Trengove for one more year is harmless, yet it seems as though it's going to force the club to fold going by his 3 year old style tantrum.

Clearly you have no insights into list management and the fact that every place on an AFL list is like winning Tatts!

Ok, the club has seen fit to give him another contract! In my mind it is a very questionable decision! Tell you what let's revisit this time next year and evaluate the sucess or not of this! Tell you what, if this is a success I'll not post here again EVER!

I am happy with the McDonaldd's actually. Your comments are over the top with them like they are with Trengove.

Why do you want to delist him? Would pick 60 or 80 be better than him? I doubt it.

Dawes, Grimes, Terlich and Newton should be delisted happy for the rest of the senior list to stay.

Can't delist everybody because you will end up with a heap of picks over the 60's and most of them are no good.

Absolutely thrilled for JT, a deserved extra year.

as for Pickett, suggest no-one take seriously a guy who was complaining about Juice Newton being delisted for three to four years after he was cut. This guy genuinely thought Juice was a gun. Pickett, showing how classy and knowledgeable he is, joined and started a couple of threads on the old demonology slamming Brad Green for being soft on the week of his 200th. History has shown him to be quite clueless on many topics, I believe JT will just remind us again how the fence is about as sharp as a plank.

Glad to see Jack get another year.   He is a talented footballer cruel led by injury . He could have been a champion and still could make a contribution. Judgements are made about a players use by date. Some are right some are wrong. Whose to say. Time will tell. However, some players bring something special to a team and the human fabric of a club. It creates culture and a belief in the essence of a club. Individuals make a difference to a club and how team mates and others view it. James NcDonald and Boomer Harvey come to mind. Trengove is a role model for others. He is what a professional athlete should be about. His return from injury is an inspiration to others. Jack is a leader and a great asset to the club. You do not lightly dispose of quality individuals. And if you do, it can have bad outcomes. Disposing of him now would have sent the wrong message to his team mates and ones sense of justice and fairness. In 12 months time, Jack may be gone. However, at least we will then know. And the decision will be fair.   Patience can be a virtue and I hope this proves to be the case with Jack.

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
