Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Trengove signs

Trengove played a number of games when clearly under duress so those games don't really count in my eyes.  In fact, there is no real form line for Jack unless we want to go all the way back to 2010/2011.

I see him as a talented mature age type who has been out of the game for a long period of time who has been offered a 1 year deal on a probable lowish salary.  With a total of 44 players on a clubs list, the risk in re-signing Jack for one year is low-risk from the clubs point of view.

There just aren't that many proven 'AFL ready' players in the system - more than half of all the 800 listed players & rookies have question marks over their heads.  So there is plenty of room for project players or role players by default.  Same as there's plenty of room for unproven youngsters.  There is no unlimited talent pool.

The issue with Trengove is recapturing a yard of pace, confidence and match day experience.  As others have indicated, some sprint training can help but I reckon his main issue is restoring his own confidence.  His main attribute is footy smarts and to display those footy smarts requires confidence and big match experience.

Unfortunately this thread, about one of the most popular players at the club, has been derailed by a poster who has some sort of obsession about player speed, I wonder what his view was on Tyson last year when he was playing injured and seemed to have lost his speed.

If Trenners can find his form, the form he had as a younger player, he will be an absolute bonus for us, he is a known quality and is certainly a better option than some 18 year old kid in the draft.  We have a few players that are in and out of the side, Kennedy, Pederson, Harmes, Wagner, Bugg and Choo Choo, then we have players like JKH and ABN who are going to get a game from time to time but not necessarily going to be fixtures, Trenners now fits in to this category until he proves he is worth a permanent spot or is asked to find another home.

Maybe picket feels we should get rid of all the players that don't have a permanent spot, except Oscar, he has a spot but picket reckons he's a dud as well.

Clearly you have no insights into list management and the fact that every place on an AFL list is like winning Tatts!

Ok, the club has seen fit to give him another contract! In my mind it is a very questionable decision! Tell you what let's revisit this time next year and evaluate the sucess or not of this! Tell you what, if this is a success I'll not post here again EVER!

Finally Pittle Feck says something I can get excited about.

Mods, is there a way to set this to reappear in a sticky 12 months from now?

Disappointing that we have to wait so long. 12 months more and the global supply of exclamation marks will have run out.

Anyway - to the test. By this time next year;

For Picket Fence to be right, then Jack Trengove's contract extensions needs to be shown to be such a bad decision it can be used as an example of the failed decision-making that cost us the last 50 years without premierships.

For Paul Roos, Simon Goodwin, Todd Viney and so forth to be proven right, Jack Trengove needs to play more games/make a greater contribution than the average of fourth-round draft picks.

It's good that MFC have demonstrated loyalty to a player who has worked hard to get back from a serious injury. Unfortunately Trengove is likely to turn out to be just another list clogger.

What's a list clogger?

Is it a player that might get 10 or so games a year, or is it someone that doesn't play as well as you think they should?

It always amazes me that this term is thrown around without any thought as to what the player adds to the overall team.

Hopefully we will see Trenners vying with Oliver to be BOG in Casey's VFL Premiership! ?

I am happy that he has another year, he deserves it for all he's been through and the loyalty he has shown the club.

I've been as critical as anyone of his lack of pace dating back to 2011 before his foot injury, however on reflection it's not just a lack of pace that is the concern but rather an all round lack of explosiveness.

As many people point out, Sam Mitchell isn't quick but where he differs from Trengove is the explosiveness of his play. Mitchell can fire off a quick kick or handpass in the blink of an eye and his first few steps are as quick as anyone which give him time and space in congested situations.

If Trengove is to get back to playing regular football for Melbourne he needs to somehow improve this, although in fairness I thought his two games this year were pretty good.

I opened this thread thinking it was something to do with Jack Trengove. Apparently I'm mistaken and it is instead a treatise in the inner workings of Picket Fence's psyche.

Ever since Toumpas left, Picket's been looking for a cause celebre. Now it appears he has found one. We should each be prepared to do one of two things. Either use Demonland's excellent facility of blocking users by blocking Picket or get used to his new obsession. Thanks to the Footy Department, we've just had that obsession extended by one more year. And I'm pretty happy about that. And I'm now going to block Picket.

Hey guys, as a hypothetical.. do you think things would have been different if we selected Trengove first then Scully second in the 09 draft?

I remember at the time that we weren't sure who we would have selected first until the day.

Would GWS have targeted Trenners instead?

Trengove is unlikely to make much of a difference to the performance of the team next year

Whether he signed or not is really of little consequence. Certainly not enough to become  a cause celebre

Well done MFC FD, with another pre-season will come confidence in his own body, we already know that he has a strong mind and the sort of qualities that can only help to speed up the growth of our very young and talented group. Good on you FD and Good on you Jack!! - Go Dee's!!!

I have a theory on his lack of speed and its very fixable if I'm right. He bulked up too much in his two years of rehab in the gym. He'll trim down in the pre season and get it right. His speed will come back to its best which isn't Hunt fast but which was fast enough.

There have been many examples over the years of players bulking up too much which has caused them to slow down too much. They have then needed to trim down to get their speed back. (Think the entire Dons playing list after Robinson's first drug infested pre season)

In the few games he played he showed he still has elite footy smarts, great overhead marking for his size and solid kicking skills.

The Club obviously believe he can get back to his best or they wouldn't keep him on for another year. I'm sure he'll be on an incentive based contract with plenty of upside for each game he plays. What's the risk?

You don't understand the modern game if you have to ask what position he has to play or who he will replace. At the worst, if he gets back he could play as a rotating player off the bench into the midfield, the half back line or the half forward line. Even forward pocket. If he gets back to his best there are many players his best is better than. Matt Jones played on the weekend. Bugg, vandenBurg hasn't shown a great deal this year, Melksham, at this stage Harmes. Vince will be gone in a couple of seasons, at this stage maybe even Stretch. Also ahead of a few fringe players such as ANB, JKH, Lumumba.

I thought he looked very slow on Sunday. Apart from 1 great mark was a shadow of his former self. Still cannot see the sense in resigning him next year and on Sundays outing just proved it even more! But what do I know??

I'll go out on a limb here and say Trengove will be BOG in the grand final this week.

When he gets interviewed after the game he will say he did it to stick it up 'picket'...

we put the kid through hell, making him captain way to early after some good early form and then he had an injury that most thought he'd never make it back from and he did, he's earned one more crack, a full pre season and then it's fair game, he either cements his spot or he leaves knowing he just wasn't quite good enough.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
