This season, he has led from the front, placed himself Hird-like in positions to effect the contest and kicked crunch-goals.  I remember a point in the Hawks game when he went into defence and really started throwing his weight around (and got knuckle-sandwiches in the process).

Apart from maybe Jack Viney or even big Treebeard Gawn, who do you think would take the mantle from Nathan The Midfield Jones?

Definitely leadership group material based on his output this year. But I still think Viney is next in line after a couple more years from Jones.

Too late!  Jones has anointed Jack Viney!  http://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/nathan-jones-says-jack-viney-will-be-the-next-melbourne-captain/news-story/b552d255ab4f756475f02935733d0921

Not up to Jones to decide I know but Viney is how the cards lie. He was born for the job.

Jack Watts is a happy lad, showing good on field leadership which will continue regardless of who is captain.

Viney, Watts maybe VC

Don't burden Watts with the captaincy. FFS. This is the first season he's played consistently good footy. Let's just allow him to play his role and he'll be far better for it.

I think Max Gawn would be a good chance/choice.

but 99.9% sure it'll be Viney.

Viney Captain

Gawn Vice

Viney - daylight - more light - another gap - gaping chasm - everyone else.

Viney is almost certainly the next captain. Brayshaw I still see as future captain material despite his hiccups.

Watts is looking a lot more like a leader though. Will be elected to the LG next season.

Yep, noticed Watts has been playing some great crunch time footy.
Wants to impact the contest when the heats on .
Loving his work ATM.

I would think it'd be Viney, but Watts would make an outstanding vice.  Always the first senior player to run to a young player after they've made a mistake and talk to them.  Him and Viney would complement each other well.

I find it pretty hard to imagine any scenario where Viney isn't the next captain.

Tom McDonald as one of his senior deputies.

Interesting a thread appears. Eldest lad and I were discussing this very thing last evening.

We reckon he's better as VC material. He's earning it.

He's stood up . Very impressed. Onya Jack

if watts maintains his form for the remainder of the year, then he's a lock for 2017's leadership group. jones (c) and viney (vc) for next two years, then viney to take over, with gawn/watts/t-mac (if he gets his act together) as the vc.

I've never seen a more obvious captain than Viney.

Jack Watts is playing great footy let him and all of us just have fun with that.

If it were to be an issue in the next couple of years I'd say Watts is a viable choice because we don't want to put it on Viney too soon.  If it's a question for four or five years in the future then Viney will be in his prime and more than ready for it.

Viney all the way for me as next captain but 100% will be a key figure in the leadership group next year and possible co-VC. I feel Jones will go around again as captain and Watts could be co-VC to Viney or deputy VC maybe.

But Watts's leadership has been outstanding this year.

Viney was born to captain the Dees, BUT Jack Watts is a legend and has started being a real on field leader so would make a servicable captain for sure.

JV7 next skipper for me, but i'd give Nathan Jones another couple of years at it though.

Posted (edited)

Even Watts would be happy to see "Jones  > Viney" but it would be a travesty for Watts not to see out his career as Vice-Captain!

Jack Viney was going to be captain the second he was born. Not saying Wattsy couldn't captain, I'm saying Viney was born to captain this club.

Viney with the C and Gawn as VC from 2018 or 2019. Wattsy does enough without the title, let him continue to focus on his own game without the added pressure of being either Captain or Vice.

I honestly think it could be more like 2-3 years but i see your point.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
