Bring in Juice Newton for the Weed! He'd kick 4 in the first quarter and between him and Hogan could clear the ball out of our backline into our forward 50 by clunking massive contested grabs!! Neddy could simply run out the back and take an easy kick from our goal square. We'd kick at least 30 goals this way!!

Small forwards ok with Garlett Kent Petracca Anb.  Hibberd strengthens defence. Melksham should play wing/half bk. He has played too deep in defence which is not his position. He was brought in for pace and midfield burst.

Brayshaw/Kennedy/Trengove on the cusp.

The Essendon ASADA players already look cooked 4 rounds in.  As a collective they have been woeful.

I don't know what to think.

I just hate the fact that Lewis and Gawn are out, and that had we had both of them (with Hogan) we'd probably be at least 3 wins and 1 loss.

Richmond will be a tough game. The absolute 'in' must be 4 quarter white hot intensity. No more 10-15 minute lapses.

Magner, M. Jones, Pickle Evans, Jordie, Tapscott, Nicholson, Sellar, Strauss, Bail and Toumpas (among others I won't bring up).

Doesn't matter who we bring in.

Having said that, our defensive issues are not the back six individuals. They are team structures and pressure up the ground. The third quarter was on the half-forwards and midfielders for failing to apply enough pressure, allowing Fremantle to move the ball with ease.

I agree Frost was better than OMac and I'm also an OMac believer, but I do concur with rjay in that we have massive defensive problems. There were times in the first 3 weeks where our zone actually worked perfectly, not all the time, but there were distinct passages where it was functioning to its intended purpose. But against Freo it was all over the place. I suspect they're really missing the presence of a Lewis back there, but TMac and Frost need some continuity together. Frost was rusty, I'm hoping he's less so this week.

Agreed, although I wouldn't be surprised to see us give Weideman a rest for Pedersen. The Richmond backline is ordinary and if we have Watts and Hogan always inside 50, with Pedersen rotating between the forward half and the second ruck position, it may well be too much for Richmond to handle. I think the Pedersen in is unlikely given Goody's determination to play Watts as second fiddle in the ruck.

 I think this is the excuse he'll roll out every time they are pumped this year. They're simply not that good as a football team.

Ok going by this VFL report it seems Hibberd and Trengove have put a strong case forward for selection.

Big game. Going to be hard to knock off Richmond with the hoardes of supporters they'll have. Any big club that are on a role are hard to beat. 

I'd have three Ins: Hogan, Brayshaw and Hibberd.

Outs: Weideman (corky), Tyson and ANB.

 

I admire ANB's role playing ability. But his ball use, decision making and banging it on the boot blindly is infuriating. 

Tyson similarly is just a numbers gatherer who doesn't punish the opposition. He's also a liability on the outside and when it comes to defensive transition.

Melksham gets one more chance and if release him up the field to a wing with hibberd coming into the side. No contested possessions last week. I'd be asking him to crack in, use his two-way running and kick long to the advantage of our forwards.

I doubt Tyson and ANB will both come out, but it's the way I'd have it against a nippy, fleet-of-foot Richmond side who will be desperately trying to break this mini hoodoo.

the Tigers have been a different outfit this year, exchanging Vickery/Riwolt forward to three smalls, who get a lot of long ball over the back.

not sure extra height is needed.  What we really need is clear execution from halfback (Hibbard), forward 50 pressure (Weids out) and better composure/class in the midfield (Tyson for Trenners?), (Viney etc to step up).  We also need our defensive zone to not get sucked too far up the ground.

then we can smash them in the contest.

Tigers are a condifence team so they will be hard to beat - we need to rough them up and get score board pressure on early

Melksham has been horrible, and as someone else mentioned, we can't carry two players in the side who haven't played for a year. 

For me, it's simple changes

In: Hogan, Hibberd

Out: Weids, Melksham

I think Hannan adds a nice dimension to our forwardline, and I'd leave him in at the moment.

Edit: I'd be happy to see Pedo in the side, if we feel it's better for balance

Nobody is talking about Trengove who is said to have been best on for Casey over the weekend. What is Tyson currently offering that Jack can't? I'd like to give him one more chance.

Hibberd in for Melksham - Hibberd looked a bit short of a run yesterday, but he is a class above VFL level and Melksham was ordinary on the weekend.

Hogan in for Weideman - I think Weideman will be a good player in 12 months or so but he is a liability at the moment. He particularly needs to go out this week given his injury. I am also not of the view that his progression will be accelerated significantly by playing Seniors. I think it will happen naturally with increased fitness and strength over time.

Other notes from watching the AFL and the second half of Casey's game:

• I would consider bringing in Pedersen for Hannan, because I felt he played very well in the VFL yesterday, but I would prefer to go with the extra pace of Hannan.
• I don't see a spot for Trengove at AFL level despite also playing well yesterday. Perhaps he could come in for Tyson, but I think Tyson adds more grunt at the coalface.
• Brayshaw needs to be cleaner with the ball (both in disposal and collection) to earn a recall. Likewise Kennedy.
• Maynard won a lot of the ball but is miles off AFL in terms of skill.
• Oscar McDonald will be a player with time and was generally good yesterday. As much as I was happy to see Frost come back into the Seniors this week, I think Oscar will be the better player long term.
• I would prefer to play Vince on the ball or wing and use Lewis in his role down back. This week I would push Salem back in his place.
• Spencer makes a lot of dumb decisions, particularly giving away free kicks in the defensive 50. It is going to be a long 12 weeks until Gawn returns.

Simple question. Does the statistic "turnover" only count kicks or handpasses that go to the opposition? Or does it count fumbles which are followed by the opposition getting the ball. If it's the former, I can't see how Melksham could stay in the team (although I didn't notice him as being that bad on Saturday). If it's the latter...I'm still not sure he should stay in the team.

Weideman (injured or omitted) out for Hogan. I suspect Hibberd if he's ready for Melksham. If he's not ready, Harmes goes to the backline and the best performed of Brayshaw/Trengove/JKH goes forward.
