  2. Born in the same month as RDB, and were great protagonists. I remember journo Michael Horan writing that as an 11yo the Weid took him to a game when he was captain. Parked the FJ in Johnston St, went into the Yarra Hotel and they both had a steak counter lunch; and 2 pots for the Weid. Then carry the Gladstone bag over to the changing rooms, preliminary to leading the Pies to another stirring home game win. Different days!

  3. Commiserations young man, it is a terribly sad fact that we all have to face and it stays with us for the rest of our lives, but you must remember just how proud of you your mum would have been, you have achieved so much in your young life span. Hang in there Kozzie and remember that you have the whole MFC family thinking of you and your family.!!!!

  5. Brown Knee, Hore ACL and Weid hip are unconnected injuries. This is the first soft tissue injury we’ve had for a while now (that I can recall) which suggests training methods, approach, load etc. are on point. If a pattern of soft tissue injuries emerges that’s when you need to worry. Burgess is the best in the business. He’ll manage injuries properly and have this team cherry ripe for Round 1.

  7. For some reason my all time favorite final is the win against Carlton in the 2000 final series, what a game and Malcolm Blights one sided commentary still rankles me. Green and Bruce played crucial cameo's in a solid team win, I can still remember that we were all jumping up and down as the scoreboard chopped and changed in that last quarter...Phew, I was exhausted.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. To be fair, I think quite a few in the camp against this rule change (myself included) aren't necessarily anti-change per se. Your first sentence highlights my main concern - we haven't seen it, because it hasn't been tested, nor does it sound like they have consulted with coaches. The AFL's form on this isn't great - they have introduced a raft of rule changes in recent years, mostly under the guise of reducing congestion and increasing scoring, and I'd argue that not a single one has worked as intended. The thing with these rule tweaks is that they will almost certainly have unintended consequences, which history suggests are impossible to predict without the benefit of hindsight, and tend to have frustrating teething issues with over-zealous umpiring interpretations. This one might turn out to be successful, or it could be an unmitigated disaster; the point is that I'd rather see potentially significant tweaks such as this to be trialed in state leagues first.

  9. Ernest I thought he suffered last year like a few others who were played out of position. He is a half forward or nothing IMO. It's like trying to turn Harmes into a Backman.

  12. I remember the bounce of the ball in the centre it went slightly angling towards Jeff White and Malcoim Blight, oh the opposition ruckman unfairly disadvantaged saying did you see the bounce. Spare me Malcolm ! Never ever had a good word for the Dees. Honestly i am not even exaggerating. He was a Whinger.

  13. Information from the club. Sinead Goldrick suffered a head knock late in last week’s clash against North Melbourne, and under the AFL’s concussion rules, is automatically ruled out. She was important for us with her drive from the backline.

  16. Channel 7: "first the lowest scoring season in 600 years, then the covid thing with short quarters ... we're trying to sell ads here, guys. Just remember the rights are up for renewal after this year. Give us more goals or you might find your product, your entertainment experience, whatever s*** you want to call it, isn't as valuable as you thought." Gil: "Yes Mr Stokes. I'm right on it, Mr Stokes." (back at AFL house) Gil: "Steve, find a way for these [censored]ers to score more goals or your [censored] is finished." Hocking: "Hmmm ... is that open slather?" Gil: "Yes" Hocking: Does it have to make sense?" Gil: "No" Hocking: *thinks* "finally!!!!" *aloud* "I've got one or two ideas, Gil. Leave it to me."

  18. Some good points Never. This issue is up to Ooze with other line coaches and Goody's game plan. I would expect 25% improvement in our use of Max and our Better than most midfielders Use of ball this season. Lets see.

  19. Boy you can dull a crowd OD! Where do you get your info from? The AFL are determined to keep to the draw as announced to Round 6 Without disruption. Talk is that at some stage each team may go interstate to play 2 games or similar but no hubs as per last year. Criwds are looking to start at a minimum 50% and improve on that. AFL are super keen to get the jewel in their crown Victoria up and running as trouble free as possible after last year. Thousands who have stuck with us over the decades are either in the Half glass full or empty category.or just go each year and especially so after a year off last year!! Just because you have already excused yourself from attending till July once the Covid conditions are applied by the Health Dept it's up to the individual if any other health issues are relevant. Of course you could always get your jab Which would be a positive start!!! I am looking to get mine ASAP so I can make choices about coming from interstate to go to the G! I BTW I am in my 55th consecutive years membership with Grand Final guarantee. Sorry that's a bit Too much positive for you to take in In one post!!

  20. I really don't think Max is utilised that well honestly. He taps like 90% over his left shoulder and instantly whoever gets it is under the pump. How about drifting forward instead of back occasionally? Our backline is great, we are constantly outnumbered going forward and this is in part due to Max always dropping behind the play. When he takes the mark in the backline he rarely hands off the ball by hand and tends to give it straight back quite often with a garbage kick. We may look better with Daw or Jackson in the ruck and learn to utilise Max more around the ground. Prefer forward to back as mistakes are not as costly. He gets a heap of Hit outs which gives him All Australian positions by default. Do we actually gain midfield ascendancy because of his dominance?? Not sure we do for how dominant he could/should be!

  21. A turning point at age 30, I don’t think so. He is not the future. We need to develop others. I thought last year that he had outlived his usefulness in footy terms.

  26. The three most memorable are the 1987 finals run where we beat Footscay, then North by 118 points and the Swans by 70-odd. That was peak optimism as a supporter The campaign for the whole season was do it for Robbie after he wanted to retire at the end of 86. 29. "who's up? who's up?" maybe the 6 foot 9 dudes facing each other, razor! the 'nominate who rucks' rule has to be the most superfluous of them all - if two blokes from the same team go up, it's a free...it ain't complicated

  32. Bad luck for him but a great opportunity for one of the new crop. Not perturbed by this at all. 30 this year but still contracted for 2022. May have to spend some time at Casey. Hope he does that with the good grace shown by Lewis.

  34. Respectfully you don't move a 3 time All Australian ruckman out of his best position. I don't mind the idea of occasionally resting Max deep in the forward line.

  35. This has the potential to make footy unwatchable with so many 50m penalties, but the big concern for me is it opens up another option for umpires to influence results. For example if they give one team half a second longer before calling play on after the player has actually played on, the ball carrier will be off and gone. There'll be no stats on it so it goes completely under the radar. Of all the rule changes over the last decade, this one has me the most concerned.

  36. From over here I would just say please do what it takes and stay on the side of extreme caution. The feeling in Britain is that Australia has done very well and is an example to follow in certain areas such as "go hard, go early". Massive errors were made here and the situation is a disaster with over 116,000 deaths. The vaccination program is going very well, they have got that right. I get my first one tomorrow. However there are still dark days ahesd. Take care.

  37. Unfortunately a false dawn. We were beaten by Freo the next week and complete rubbish for the next 10 years before a revival of sorts in 2016-2018. An often missed game 1998 at Princes Park V Carlton round 4 , first game for Nathan Brown who was insanely brave for a skinny 17 year old that day, great comeback and first proof we were a real chance of making finals after the disaster of 97.

  41. Can not understand the interpretation sometimes How can you run off line if you are out of bounds, if you do that it should be play on, then the ball is over the boundary line throw it in !!
    1 point
  42. I would add that if the player with the ball goes off-line 1 step it is play on. No natural arcs, off-line is off-line. If Buddy wants to go off-line he should start a bit further back. Edit. Including outside the boundary, off-line is still off-line, play on.

  43. I think one consequence of this rule change will be that, with the man on the mark anchored, it may well be so much easier to determine when the player with the ball moves off his mark, and hence many more play ons will be called, as opposed to 50m penalties imposed.

  44. I wouldn’t mind them being this rule in if it didn’t incur such a massive penalty, if it was 25m I think that would be fair. Like @Clint Bizkiti get the theory behind it but I think the execution is going to be interesting to see. I think there’s going to be a lot of frustration in the early rounds.

  45. It will be interesting to see how this pans out. I suspect there'll be criticism of over-officiating by umpires initially, but if this speeds up the game as intended, it may have the result of stopping flooding. Teams may well have to ensure they keep a couple of defenders well back to stop the breakaway forward movement from having a free run at goal. Nevertheless, I would prefer to see this rule change tested properly before it is introduced.

  46. It could be a nice, small rule change that opens up play just a little without causing any disruption at all. It has just the specific problem of over-riding coach's demands which will have been drilled into players from about 8 years old so it would be appropriate to have plenty of consultation, a good lead-in time for clubs to train the new habit, and a fairly generous interpretation in initial implementation. Zero from three. Good to see the Imperial office maintaining their batting average.

  47. The more money tv give to sport the less people actually watch that sport, ever since cricket was taken off free to air tv in the UK less and less people now watch cricket in England. It's actually a trap for sport, they lose viewers for more money, and in the long run they lose money.

  48. Sports that through greed or desperation put everything behind paywalls will suffer as well. Free to air TV still reaches the widest audience which then keeps it relevant and makes more money in the long term. The question is how much longer free to air tv will even exist and if everything ends up owned by big tech in the end. The thing I'd like to see is members rewarded with a free or discounted streaming package. Pay $300 for a membership, here's a link to access all 22 Melbourne games streamed to you.
