  1. He told him he sucked at Fortnite. Jetta responded by saying he's an adult and that he plays Dota and that Fornite is for little kids. Lecras then said Dota sucks. Cue fight.

  2. I have it on first hand knowledge that it was a disagreement about the principles of Hegelian philosophy. The sticking point was something to do with rationalism vs absolute idealism and they eventually came to blows overs the concept of sublation. They'd been at it all day and eventually the Frenchman cracked it because Nev had refuted his point using a solipsism.

  4. I suspect I'm not alone in thinking this year has the same feel about it as our 1987 experience. Back then we were desperately trying to break our finals drought for Robbie Flower. We had recruited well with three young guns in Todd Viney, Earl Spalding and Warren Dean giving us better depth than previous years. But we lost Chris Connolly to a knee injury early (shades of Lever), then lost the dash of star wingman Alan Johnson (up stepped Graeme Yeats to fill that void a bit) and then on that fateful day at Whitten Oval in Rd 22, saw our star youngster Garry Lyon break his leg. But we managed to win that day. A ball heading for the boundary in the third term bounced at right angles and Robbie pounced to provide a bit of magic and turn the tide our way. Jason Dunstall helped us a bit down at Kardinia Park as well and hey presto we were in the finals again. Those who were around then will recall how our side suddenly developed faith and confidence and we played like champions in the finals against North and Tommy Hafey's Sydney the following week. It's fair to say that if our game goes up a notch on reaching the finals this year, then book your ticket now for the trip west to play West Coast in the prelim, because it will happen. Then all we have to do is hope that the same ill-luck doesn't befall us as it did that day out at Waverley against the Hawks in 1987. Whilst our 1987 side had some absolute greats (Flower, Todd Viney and a couple of Brownlow medallists in Jimmy and Willo) and an outstanding back six, I reckon our current side is a tad better, although you'd hope so given the amount of time they work on their skills. Imagine if DL was around back then, it would have gone into overdrive with all the kicking errors! For those of you of my vintage, let us know if my comparison stacks up. 1987 PF team B: B.Lovett Hughes Wight HB: Stretch Spalding Grinter ? Yeats Chiron Newport HF: Flower Dean Bailey F: Jackson Wilson Stynes Ru: O’Dwyer T.Viney Greg Healy Res: Eishold, Campbell Back-ups: David Williams, Doug Koop Injured: Lyon, Johnson, Connolly, Moore Brett Lovett/Nev Jetta Have a look at a video of the Rd 22 Footscray game and you’d realise how good Brett Lovett was. So disciplined, so clever. Nev has similar niftiness, but doesn’t get quite as involved in offence. Danny Hughes/O.Mac Our nominated full-backs. Hughes in 1987 was up their with the best in the business back then. Both a tad slow, both thumping kicks capable of clearing the defensive 50. Hopefully Oscar’s confidence can continue to grow in the finals. Sean Wight/Sam Frost Hard not see the Wight resemblance in the way Frosty plays. Both gung-ho risk takers and excitement machines. Both capable of stunning turnovers as well, but even in today’s precise game, you sometimes have to take the good with the bad. Stephen Stretch/Christian Salem Salem has been our best defender this year. Stretch was our club champion in 1987. Stretch gave our defence amazing run launching us forward with his long- kicking, Salem is not as quick, but his footskills are cleaner and he hits harder. Rod Grinter/Michael Hibberd Rodney provided the fear that all defences needed and evened up the score a little against the Hawks in the PF, sending Chris Mew to LaLa land. He also had a good leap and thumping kick. Hibberd has provided a great mix of aggression and run to our current side. Both would be among first picked each week by coach. Dean Chiron/Jordy Lewis Both came to us from other clubs and both played their role with distinction. Jordy has given us elite distribution skills, Chiron (highly unskilled by comparison to Jordy) was the fearless tagger in the days when clubs needed at least two or three nullifiers, bordering on dirty. Earl Spalding/Tom Mc One of three gun recruits that came to us that year. The WA started out as a CHB that year and was moved to CHF in 1988 because he was an amazing mark – possibly the best we’ve had. He wasn’t always so reliable with his kicking and Northey got jack of him in the early 90s. Carlton realised his worth and he was a key part of their ’95 flag. T-Mac has already transformed into a gun forward and he is also a strong mark, judging ball flight better than just about anybody I’ve seen. Graeme Yeats/Angus Brayshaw Yater had a career-best season in 1987 having been moved from the back-pocket to the wing. He provided great run, was a handy mark for his size, and apart from that PF miss, was generally a pretty reliable kick. He was a significant midfield upgrade that year. Angus has done the same this year but is bigger and classier. Brett Bailey/ Jake Melksham Bails was a tough mid who drifted forward and kicked a heap of goals that year. He was the glue in our 1987 side and was the hero of our night grand final win, kicking the winner. Melky has come of age this year and is the glue up forward with his bullet passes. Simon Eishold/Alex Neal-Bullen Eishold held his spot throughout the 1987 finals despite some dissenters. He was a workhorse half forward whose kicking occasionally let him down, significantly the one from 10m out in the PF. ANB is a prolific workhorse and also has his dissenters, but has a little more evasiveness about him and despite what some DLers say, has some neat kicking skills. Stephen Newport/Dom Tyson Newy came off the bench to replace Garry Lyon in the Footscray game and had what some will say was his best game that day on the wing with Dean shifted to CHF. He was a thumping kick (just like Dom), but didn’t have his inside skills. Robbie Flower/Clayton Oliver Hard to believe that he had to wait 270 games to play his first final. He was the player that kept fans believing throughout the dreadful 70s and 80s. And he stepped up big time in his first two finals before being sniped by Gary Ayres in the prelim. Olly hasn’t had to wait long for a final, but there is already a case being made that we are looking at similar genius. Warren Dean/Mitch Hannan Dean’s arrival as a wingman in 1987 with Todd and Earl helped turn us around. He was very clever with the give and a thumping kick and had to play CHF in the 1987 finals once Lyon went down. He injured his knee in 1988 and never really recovered. I sense with Mitch that after nearly two years of adjusting to AFL, this might be his time to shine like Dean did that September. He has the tools – the leap, the pace, the accurate long kick – he just needs to put it together more often. Brian Wilson/CP5 Both have the hips that don’t lie and are showmen of the highest order. Willo won a Brownlow Medal in the middle and then became a mercurial baulking forward. Trac is just as mecurial. Ricky Jackson/Charlie Spargo We all loved tricky little Ricky and his pace caused mayhem back then. Charlie has the same cult following and whilst he’s not as quick, he has way more skill. Tony Campbell/ Bayley Fritsch Tony was used pretty much everywhere at the Dees, full-forward, wing and then as a key defender and on his day he was a pretty handy player. I never really got over the fact he didn’t handball to Robbie in the goalsquare in time on against the Hawks. Bayley gives us the same flexibility and is a much more skilful player – almost Floweresque. Jim Stynes/Sam Weideman OK, in 1987 Jimmy was still a baby and was brought in mid-season from VFA side Prahran. But he gave us a glimpse of his ability that season and his mobility meant he could pretty much play anywhere and he kicked 15 goals that year. Weid won’t be a Jimmy Stynes, but I was struggling to find a similar player from that year to marry him up with. To me, Weid has a bit of the TomaHawk about him, but let’s wait and see whether his game can go up a cog this final series. Steve O’Dwyer/Max Gawn Gawny would no doubt prefer the Stynes comparison, but Strawb was huge in 1987 (when not suspended) and gave us someone who could win the taps and dish it out to his opponent as well. Obviously Gawny has way more class about him and marks more like Jimmy. Todd Viney/ James Harmes Two young bulls. Todd, like Jack, was a well-developed teenager in 1987 who loved charging through packs and Harmes of the past few weeks has shown similar attributes. Harmesy is a better kick, but he has a long way to go to match Todd’s huge career. But I wouldn’t put it beyond him. Greg Healy/Nathan Jones Both are/were clever ball users and Sugar was already showing the leadership in 1987 that would see him replace Robbie as skip. Nathan’s career is nearing the end, although I’m expecting a final instalment as a defender to start next season. David Williams/Aaron Vandenberg Injury cost David his best years at the Dees, although he did kick nine one day. He wasn’t quite big enough to play FF, so often had to play as a half forward and I have a feeling he was dropped for the prelim, although maybe he was injured. Vanders has had similar luck with injury so far, but I’ll give you a tip – if we make the prelim, he won’t be dropped under any circumstances. Doug Koop/Dean Kent A talented player who Northey got plenty out of including a strong effort against the Dogs. Dropped for the prelim, he would have been the most likely inclusion for the injured Robbie or Willo had Jimmy not run over the mark and we had made the GF. We all got a reminder out west of what Kenty can do and hopefully he can keep bringing it for the next four games. Absent five Garry Lyon/Jesse Hogan Our Gaz was still a teen but already a gun when he broke his leg in the Footscray game. There are a lot of what ifs in footy and I just reckon that if Alan Johnson and Lyon were playing, we might well have stolen the ’88 GF. Jesse is a different story, but like Gaz, integral to our forward line. Whether Weid can continue to replace him with such vigour remains to be seen. But at least he isn’t showing signs of grizzling about the umpiring. Alan Johnson/Jack Viney For a while it looked like Johnno was never going to be able to get his hamstrings right. Ditto Viney with his foot issues. But the best of Jonno came not as the wingman who won his first Bluey in 1983, but the running defender who altered the way footy was played from the back in 1988 and 1989. Perhaps a healthy Jack can do a similar reformation. Chris Connolly /Jake Lever Connells had become a mainstay down back as a small defender and did his knee in Rd 5 that year and never really got back to the same level. Lever showed in half a season that he’s a terrific mark and spoiler and let’s pray he gets back to that level next season. Peter Moore/Joel Smith Having turned 30, Moore had a few back issues and missed much of the season which ultimately helped because Strawb and Jimmy got goes. Smith’s season has gone the reverse. He finally got his chance when Lever went down and showed us all what he can do with his leap, speed and tackling ability. Will be interesting to see whom he replaces in coming weeks. Peter Giles/Bernie Vince As with Moore, Gilesy’s career as a gutsy defender who could occasionally be sent forward and turn games was coming to an end, although he played a key role in the night GF win in 87. Injury has seen Bernie miss his final shot at glory, but he has been a similarly revered asset in the rise of the club in his 100 games.

  14. I think I'll support the club how I like and everyone else can do the same. There isn't anyone on this forum who does not support or love the club. For me, over 30 years of paying memberships, constant donations during down times, voluntary work during mid 000's, travelling to every away game interstate which is expensive (until this year). For anyone who questions my support can get stuffed and I certainly wouldn't question anyone else's. Its a football "forum" FFS, not a lovey dovey fan boy page. I will continue to call it as I see it, both good and bad, just as I will continue to support this club until the day I die. Oh and seeing some of my posts were quoted from the Goodwin thread, I called it as I saw it, and it's hard to argue with most of those things "at the time." It certainly didn't stop me attending games and cheering on the boys, just like others who posted in that thread. Weird post TBH. Oh and this post: "Goodwin is coaching a side that is mentally weak, has poor leaders, has no defence, fails repeatedly in big games, finds new stupid ways to lose games we should win, has one manic style game plan with no ability to stop other teams scoring when it matters." Most of it was actually true. Oh and don't forget to counter it with the positive posts where I finally gave Goodwin some credit about changing and am happy for the club to bring in experienced assistants to help him next year. As for support, watch the Dees fans come out in droves for our finals, after what this club has put us all through, I respect the fact that they all keep coming back.

  15. That's a good example but any post match thread after a loss this year will do. Constructive critical analysis is always welcome and posters like @Lucifer's Hero do provide it in that thread and others. But there is too much poisonous negativity where posters let their own personal historical demons over-ride their reason. Some pause, reflection and perspective would benefit these posters and the club. Here's a quick sample from just a few pages in the Goodwin thread @Nasher references. I'll call it out for what it is.

  21. Warning THIS IS A RANT. I have never been to a final before. My husband (hawks) has been to a zillion finals plus 4 grand finals. You know what he said when I told him I would be road tripping it to Sydney if we end up having to play there? "You aren't single anymore, you have a family & kids to look after. Plus your team is not the only team in the finals (i.e. if you go to Sydney I have to stay home & MIND MY OWN CHILDREN & hence will miss out on seeing my team play finals". My response "ok ok, we will cross that bridge if it comes to it, stomped out the room & yelled BUT I AM GOING & YOU CAN'T STOP ME....!!! Bloody selfish poos & wees supporting husband..... Rant over. Thanks for listening my fellow demons :-)

  22. I take exception to this and actually find it quite insulting. As someone who went through Reach as a 14 year old I saw first hand the impact that this man had on so many young lives. We all saw the Gillon press conference at the time the punishment was handed out, he could not categorically explain what tanking even was. I don’t hate Caroline, I don’t think she is a bit*h. However if you think that moving a few magnets completely voids Jim’s body of work then you might need to re-think your priorities in life.

Now don't get me wrong, I love tights. I've been perving on sheilas wearing tights since they became a fashion item. The trouble is sheilas have become cunning and wear long jumpers that they pull down over the best bits. Very unsporting! Let's strip the sheilas of the long jumpers and give them to the blokes. Simples.

I think the inprovement in the AFL side has been mirrored in having a really strong VFL program. Hopefully the boys, who will be going in probably under manned, win in the weekend it’ll be a great reflection of where the club is at as a whole.

  28. If she said that she is just a b-tch. Jimmy through Reach, did an amazing amount of good work for the community and was a trailblazing Irish footballer, who won a Brownlow and holds the record for consecutive games, often playing through serious injury. He is also not alive and unable to defend himself, not that he needs to. Comparing trying to get a PP, which many have admitted to doing, with injecting unknown drugs into players. Disgusting comment.

  30. Ideally: Sydney to beat Hawthorn. Melbourne to beat GWS. This would set up a Richmond v Sydney, and Melbourne v Geelong in the first week. Provided Richmond get the job done, and we do against Geelong, it would pit us against Sydney at the SCG, an ideal scenario imo. Get the job done there, and this would set us up for a Prelim matchup vs WC in Perth, or the Pies at the MCG. IMO, the best case scenario would be to avoid Richmond at the MCG, and Hawthorn as well. EDIT: obvs we'd have to play Richmond at the MCG at some point, which just prefer it to be in the GF.

  31. Turning up to games is great, buying memberships is great, no one denies it's been a tough slog since our last flag and particularly the last decade. Letting your anxiety and frustration out on the current group of players (they can definitely feel the crowd vibe out on the G) is not being supportive. Throwing your hands up in the air and crying "same old Melbourne" is not being supportive. It's not a tough concept to grasp, I'm not sure why so many find it so difficult.

  37. THE STYLE GUIDE by Whispering Jack The graphic shown this week during a segment of “On the Couch” laid out some extraordinary statistics about the Melbourne Football Club’s season to date. The numbers read as follows:- • Contested possessions differential – #2 • Pressure – #2 • Points for – #1 • Points against – #9 • Points from turnovers differential – #2 • Points from clearances differential – #2 • Inside 50 differential – #1 • Time in forward half – #1 • Forward half intercepts – #1 • Points from forward half chains – #1 This was a selection of the numbers available and is by no means all inclusive about the story of the team’s style this year. They tell the story of a team that’s willing to take games on and that plays an exciting, attacking brand of football but, while the both the style of game and the actual figures are impressive, until last Sunday, they raised a question mark about why this team was desperately fighting for its life as a 2018 finalist, rather than sitting comfortably in the upper echelons of the competition preparing for qualifying finals in the coming weeks. The question was answered partially by Age writer Michael Gleeson before that game in The questions the Demons need to answer where he wrote about the alternate AFL ladder:– “It is the ladder that says what would happen if the team that lost the close games won them instead. So what would happen this year if the teams that lost games by 10 points or less won them? “The answer? Melbourne would be two games clear on top of the ladder.” Gleeson also alluded to the positive statistics such as the Demons’ #1 ranking in the competition for contested possessions but raised the spectre of its then inability to beat a top eight side and pointed to a wide gulf between its performances against top and bottom half teams. The answer according to Gleeson was that the team’s inability to stop the ball going the way of the opposition when it attacks. “Actually, the point is that Melbourne don’t defend.” That was part of the answer but it needed empirical proof and that came by means of the way that Melbourne finished off the game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium on Sunday. In those final ten minutes, after their game-long lead had evaporated before their eyes and their season was on the line, they defended stoutly and showed they had learned the lesson of their soul-destroying loss on enemy territory a month earlier against Geelong. And they did it with the style that should hold them in good stead in the weeks to come. The Lever departure required some tinkering with the defensive line up with which the selectors grappled, struggled and finally got right. There were other elements that required attention, small kinks here and there but despite the pain of the last gasp defeat by Geelong and the confused mess of the Swans game, the 17-point victory over West Coast last weekend, proved they were worthy of participating in the finals after an absence of twelve long years. The irony is that Melbourne’s tough run leading into the finals with three matches on end against three fellow finalists is going to hold it in good stead in September. As far as I’m concerned, coming up against Sydney, West Coast and the GWS Giants represents a perfect preparation, immeasurably better than say, the Cats, who were given the task of playing against witches’ hats on their own home turf in the finals lead up. For the Demons, the game against GWS presents a perfect opportunity to tune up against quality opposition without in any way releasing the pressure valve. Aside from the remote chance of making it back into the top four should the Pies stagger against the Dockers, there’s a home final at stake (although Melbourne seems to play just as well away from home these days). Thankfully, the failure of Port Adelaide and North Melbourne to stitch up opposition teams in recent games, has allowed the Demon faithful some temporary respite for their fraying nerves knowing their team will definitely be featuring in next month’s action. They will no doubt recall the humiliation of their team’s encounter with the Giants in the national capital last year when, after kicking the first three goals against the wind, it conceded an unanswered 8 goals 6 behinds before quarter time to be well and truly blown off the park. The carnage in Canberra this week pales into insignificance against that dark day. The star for GWS was Josh Kelly who returns for them this week to make for a fascinating battle of the midfields. We know how strong the Demons are in this area with their young guns and iron man Nathan Jones. They will have the support of All Australian big man Max Gawn who should match up very favourably against Rory Lobb in the ruck contests but the Giants are the highest-ranked clearance team in the AFL. Ultimately, I believe the Demons will triumph because of their forward line strength (they are the highest-ranked team for scoring, inside 50s and marks inside 50), the defence has at long last settled with Oscar McDonald and Sam Frost solid, and the visitors have the deeper injury list. That’s enough for me to tip Melbourne to win an epic encounter at the MCG by 5 points.

  39. It’s a perfect opportunity to give Bugg a last chance this week, in for Spargo who's cooked now. Bugg runs great, excellent endurance, strong who'll run, tag, compete, stick tackles and harass all day long. Yes we’ve focused on Bugg hate over his set shot kicking which has improved at least a bit, but his good qualities are so good, we forget that his 7 week suspension made us immediately weaker back then. I suspect they’ve wrongly stamped Buggs papers just as they wrongly stamped Lynden Dunn and Stef Martins. We’d be silly not to try him with little to loose now, and plenty to gain because Spargo’s cooked while Tommy B is strong and fast all day long. He could take any of their midfielders out of the game and, like with Frost, people will wonder why we didn't try him earlier.

  40. I think the "crowd affirmation" works on more then just umpires. Was sitting at the game with my very level headed WC mate and by the last he was getting in (the ferals around us were filthy from the opening bounce) on the "you've had a good day with the umps" bandwagon, he was pretty surprised by the free kick count at the end. Maybe Joeboy got pulled in by it too? The problem with the stereotypical WC supporter is that they believe that a free kick should be paid to WC at every single contest and most of the time the free that they want is non-sensical. It must be said they aren't the most educated footy crowd, but that is probably understandable given the amount of media froth that goes on about WC in Perth, the old duck who I had the displeasure of sitting next to repeated told me that she knew footy because she had been an Eagles member since 87, she then proceeded to loudly repeat ad nauesem that the umpires were wearing red and black under their green....i didn't have the heart to tell her Melbourne doesn't wear black. My take on some of the contentious decisions OMac - this is the only one that we got away with - clear holding the ball AVB - enough said about this, bad decision by the non-controlling umpire - goal WC Tyson on the goal line - watch the replay - he's got a fist in his throat - if the Barrass/Spargo free is high contact then so is this one Tyson at the top of the goal square - is tyson lucky, yep, does he get hit in the head, yep - there was a WC free on the wing for one of their players driving their head into Weideman, same, same Unfortunately my WC mates don't seem to understand that you cant have it both ways

Would be interested to know exactly what the problem was. I was mentally punching LeCras in the side of the head every time nev gave him a jumper punch.

  44. No, but we can perhaps bring in Joel Smith.

  45. Disagree Oscar has shown MUCH better kicking ability than big brother did in his first several years in defence, to the point where he can be relied on most times to find a target, and gets to plenty of contests. For his age and size, he is progressing very nicely. Just needs a heap more strength, and we will have a first class tall defender.

  47. A few points, if I may: 1) What supporters have jumped off? In the last 5 years our membership has been growing. We had record attendances at games last year. To me that shows great support for the current generation of players, coaches and staff who in the main have arrived during those 5 years. So imo supporters don't deserve the label of burdening the current players with 'posionous negativity'. 2) Some have volunteered, bought memberships and made donations for decades regardless of our on-field performance. Some go to every single game. All of us stick up for our beloved Demons when anyone outside the 'demon family' criticise us or our club. We proudly wear our colours even after we lose/get thrashed. So, I would say demon fans have shown incredible resilience and loyalty for our beloved Demons. 3) Re the last para. Everyone on this board has supported the club and will continue to support 'through thick and thin'. In recent times through a lot more thick than thin, really. Why do you think they will stop supporting the club? 4) Perhaps you want DL posters to write only jolly stuff? Maybe you want them to never question? TBH I find the constant optimistic posts as boring and robotic as the constant negative ones. Neither group of posters will change nor be objective and it is really annoying when they bog down threads in [censored]-for-tat insults. Both groups give as good as they get. I enjoy the posts of reasoned commentary, reasonable questions and yes at times criticisms when done respectfully. Along with the humourous ones is what brings me back to DL. And DL helps people vent once in a while. If you would like to see Demonland sanitised then maybe the moderators can delete relevant threads and posts. Not that it matters as players wouldn't read DL anyway. When Paul Roos was on DL podcoast he had never heard of it! Mostly, I would like to understand what type of supporter behaviour you are looking for. Edit: didn't know t*t-for-tat was banned on here ?

  48. I was unemployed when I tipped in $300 to the debt demolition campaign. And I have a general dislike of self-appointed cheerleaders giving sanctimonious little speeches which presume anyone, anyone at all on here is a soft supporter. Not at all your best moment, Fifty-5.
