PREGAME: Rd 05 vs Brisbane

Casey played a praccy match against Carlton at Princes Park on Friday evening. Lachie Hunter played and Taj got some more miles into his legs after his brief Adelaide cameo on Thursday night. Sestan not playing.

Well done to Max, Rick and Petts for turning up in the cold gloom to support the lads in a “crowd” that was comfortably outnumbered by the players on the field.

Kynan Brown was excellent, as too was the Kolt. Taj and Bill were also good.

I think there is a spot for Hunter this week.

Where?

On form alone he's certainly not taking Lamgdon or Windsor.

He can bide his time if need.

Billings would be the obvious one, but having watched the replay he was much better than many suggested i thought.

He was knocked for not being  strong enough in the contest, but that's not his go (as the club was well aware when trading him in) and made a couple of strong tackles.

I think it can be hard to assess pperformance n the role billings is playing, given it it involves so much unrewarded running and the chance if being stuck on the dead side of the ground.

To me it was a reasonable game except when he had a chance to score from general play he rushed his shots.

Tom Morris saying Oliver a chance to miss this week with that finger issue

It's funny i have cracked my ribs and broken a finger that required surgery playing footy.

I can assure everyone the cracked ribs inhibit you alot more. Unless Oliver has done more damage i doubt he would miss. He is obviously struggling with the hand but why rest him now after playing a couple of games?

I'm amazed May is playing that is alot worse

Maybe his hand isn't getting better through incidental impacts in matches so needs to rest it so it can heal. Resting one week now effectively gives him a 3 weekish window.

He shouldn't have played then. We probably wouldn't have beat Port if he didn't dominate the last 1/4.

Gawn went in to round 0 crook, Oliver playing with 1 hand and May is playing with cracked ribs.

We look good but is it sustainable? Our best players are playing when they shouldn't.

Maybe he was OK to play but expected improvements haven't come. Now have a chance to give him an extended break without missing multiple weeks.

I'm only guessing, and have no ownership of the issue at all. Just thinking less linearly than you.

I don't think asking the question if it's sustainable to keep playing our best players when they have medical issues is thinking linearly

Yeah dunno that’s just what was reported…perhaps they think a 20 day break would be good for Clayton as well and it’s a bit about managing our list through the season

Billings is worth persevering with. He’s coming off two years plagued with injury-setbacks, and is finding his feet at a new club. He was never going to play his best footy in the first few weeks.

(Oh and, my phone seems pretty determined to spell his name as “Billing’s”, so I can understand the errors)

AMW must play, perfect time to give him a crack to see how he goes.

BBB out, looks tired. Perfect debut for Fullerton v his old mob.

Billings under the pump also.

HF - Chandler, van Rooyen, Neal-Bullen

F - Fritsch, Petty, Fullerton

I'm on the side of resting Clarry -- he is clearly hampered and we need him to be right - so let the hand heal. I know it is not like for like, but perhaps bring Tommo back in as he is pretty versatile. Maybe bring Salo back into the middle - even though I don't think it really suits him and put Tommo in defence. Perhaps Salo could play a run-with role on Neale.

If Brisbane play like they did on the weekend, we should win easily. From the bits I watched, Hipwood and Cameron are still out of form and Daniher mostly got his goals from easy opportunities.

I'm glad we have a bye after this, if we can a win it's a perfect time to give our sore boys a rest. Hopefully we have VFL in the bye week?

Goodwin has proven to be loathe to make change above what's necessary. With sustained time off courtesy of a R6 bye I can't see anyone being rested and am of the view no one is currently due for ommission.

So based on what we know to be facts today IMO, it's either

  • no change

or

  • Pup Brown for Pickett

Purely based on role Brown and Spargo are the closest matches but the latter is unavailable.

McAdam probably not quite ready? Other options like Woey 2.0, Kolt, AMW, Laurie, Hunter, Sestan etc. play a different role. Not to say Goody couldn't/won't shuffle things around, just feel like evidence suggests it's not his preferred approach.

Unfortunately for Taj I think this would mean he is sub again.

Rest players after Brisbane. Perhaps Clarry but I suspect he is better off playing footy. You can’t rest to many players at the one time but playing injured players worries me. The body can only take so much before it breaks down and more damage is done.

Players coming in must be selected on form. I am firmly against selecting players on reputation. You want players who are knocking the door down at Casey, who deserve their selection based on form.

I'm a glutton for internet idiocy. I've just gone on Big Footy and read insane drivel on Brisbane's forum. Some of my favourite points:

- Fans still carrying on about their Semi Final win against us from '22.
- Calling Viney an old man.
- Lions to win by 19 points.
- Bayley Fritsch has been inconsistent over the last 18 months.
- Melbourne only seem to beat Brisbane when Oliver and Fritsch have a big night (both of whom didn't play in last year's G win).

I believe we win by 5 goals, but would absolutely love to see an 8+ goal shellacking. Any time I see Zorko walking off the G with his tail between his legs, I'm a happy person.

I actually think this will be a really close game and I certainly won’t be underestimating Brisbane. Getting the monkey off the back last week will help them and it’s Neale’s 250th so I imagine they’ll throw the kitchen sink at us.

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
