In the words of one of the bevy of great commentators we have right now. "It's probably the last time these two great combatants of the game will play against each other!"

True. They were both on AFL 360 during the week so they must have discussed it then. Also I guess there careers are so similar & they were drafted in the same year.

West Coast are legitimately entering Fitzroy territory. What the hell is going on there? They have an obscene amount of resources. You can’t just wipe out 3 seasons of footy because of ‘injuries’. It’s bizarre.

They're a tanking club.
They're either in the top 8 and contesting or they're on the bottom scooping draft pics.
No in-between.

A few people here are being harsh on West Coast.

West Coast have about 26 players able to train throughout the week.

Is it any surprise they any get within 7 goals of literally anyone these days?

I’d shudder to think how we’d performed with 8 of our best 22 out.

Another overlooked against Smith just then.  Ye olde AFL "different rules for different folk" trick

Such inconsistencies (and the frequency across a game thereof) are now deliberated, not merely appearing as little mistakes from the umpires. The AFL is doing nothing, once again, about this cancer to the game whose prevalence is with us forever in the future - as footy fans will not be able to interpret any difference now that it is embedded. It is no longer as case of ' ...having a flutter on a roughie in the last and watching the nag get up...'  The playing field is now totally uneven.

Eagles in a world of pain. Didn't watch the game but they must have been putrid to lose by 70 points at home to the Suns.

Eagles supporters are quite arrogant, and I would have thought rebellious but there doesn't seem to be any supporter angst yet. Surely Simpson is on shaky ground.

I'm sure our WA brethren are enjoying it though.

Get on Freo at $3.30 Vs Sydney tomorrow let alone next week.

Freo are more than a sneaky chance to roll Sydney on the road.

Freo have beaten Hawks, Eagles and pulled one out of the fire against the Suns. Their form line is not good at all. Why do you think they'll beat the Swans at the SCG?

Just a gut feel. And I’ve mentioned it earlier in the week in the Freo thread.

Sometimes a club needs an early kill to turn their season and confidence around. This may have happened last week to Richmond.

Sydney aren’t flying either and don’t deserve the heavy favouritism they hold.

I’m going to look like a genius or a fool either way.

What struck me was hardly any booing. Haven't turned on their own yet. Saw a kid playing clearly recruited from East Perth primary school. I am enjoying their demise.

The ump dept needs a full review and reset 56.

In particular...

> it's reluctance.to call HTB after more than sufficient prior which sometimes results in a dangerous sling tackle

> it's inconsistency with interpreting HTB, prior, insufficient attempt & incorrect disposal

> the stand/outside 5, delay of "play on" calls once player behind mark moves off the mark, in particular set shots where the player shooting for goal is often allowed to arc off the mark and ends up kicking the ball around the player on the mark instead of over it allowimg a much closer shot at goal.

> The stand rule where the mark is set for player standing the mark but player with the ball is often off to the side of the mark and is, with few exceptions, not asked to move around to his correct angle behind the mark, where the goals and the player on the mark should be the reference for determining that angle.  This often results in player with the ball being able to run up to or past the player on the mark before the umpire calls play on allowing player with ball a massive unfair advantage.

> The protected zone.  More emphasis now on players moving out of the front of the zone whereas the rule was brought in to stop players from sitting inside the players lateral zones in order to try and prevent player with ball playing on into or kicking to someone on a 45.  Oppo players now quite often run through the lateral protected zones and are now not called for 50 meters.

> On occasions players who are clearly asked to stand, move backwards off the mark after they took the option to stand.  And visa versa with the outside 5 rule.  My understanding is you can't do both and once the option is excepted by player in question, to do otherwise is an immediate breach and 50 meters.  Fairly certain this was adjudicated as such strictly early on....but some or many umpires have now backed right off on enforecement.

> Unless the above issues with the stand rule are resolved with a massive tightening up of how it is adjudicated and governed.... it should be scrapped entirely and we revert back to the old system where there was no stand/outside 5 rule.

Bottom line is...from an umpiring perspective the game is a complete mess and state of flux.  Major overhaul needed.  Will the AFL recognise this and do so?  Nope.

How are they in such a bad position with injuries for the third year in a row? It’s not just bad luck. It’s bad management.

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
