Netflix and live sport

Recommended Posts

An interesting development in the US with Netflix to stream some NFL matches. It's apparently Netflix's first entry into live sport.

I wonder whether Fox/Kayo will finally get some competition here? Would that be a good or a bad thing, if they did?

its definitely good for competition, but given how greedy the AFL is, it will more than likely canabilise the broadcasting by splitting up different games by day, platform, etc.

We can be thankful there is at least one broadcaster showing every single game in the AFL season.

I don't like it.

As much as I dislike Foxtel/kayo, most of it is in one place.

I am frustrated that rugby union is now on Stan, meaning I can't watch it without another subscription.

Splitting it further will mean I watch less of these sports.

i can't see any international streaming service having significant interest in a small domestic competition like the afl or nrl

Might be a cheaper way around local content laws.

I hear you. I got a Stan subscription to watch Melbourne Rebels matches this season. Also have Optus for soccer (Euro 2024 and Everton in the EPL). It is not cheap. Honestly, would love a pay per view system where I can just pay per match I would like to watch.

Hope we never go down that route, seems like a logical nightmare for football(soccer) fans  in the uk.

Miss the simple days of Foxtel though, now sport so fractured and everywhere for soccer.

Apple - MLS

Paramount - A-league

Optus - Premier League and Spanish League, Euros

Stan - Champions league, Europa league, Europa conference league

bein - Copa America, championship, SPL, serie a, bundesliga.

I hear you, but if it’s Netflix which most people already have, it means saving $30 a month on Kayo which I’m all for.

If the mega streamers come in they will try and buy rights to one game. Friday would be their preference or Thursday if Friday is not available.

The issue is that Kayo would scream blue murder and threaten to substantially reduce its bid. Kayo (Foxtel) already pays the lions share of the rights money for a rather raw deal.

Can't see it as the cost of providing a standalone broadcast and commentary team for one match for a six month period would make the deal highly unattractive.

Then again Kayo could team up with the mega streamer delivering kayo a lower rights price for the gamble that the loss of one game to the mega streamer will not impact its overall subs.

Frankly as WSW mentions I cannot see a mega streamer being interested in a one off deal in a small market. For them it just doesn't scale and would take up more management time than its worth (unless kayo presented them with a complete package wrapped in a nice bow.)

Also need to remember that the mega streamers are hemorrhaging money and are not so ready to buy market share as they were a few years back.

Well of course not. I assume you’ll have to pay extra but I doubt it’ll be as expensive as Kayo is, if you’re already paying for Netflix.

I only use Kayo for footy. The minute our season is over I cancel my subscription. Whereas I always have a Netflix account so I prefer to pay an extra for access to football, than to have another stand alone subscription.

Amazon Prime has the exclusive Australian rights to the upcoming T20 Cricket World Cup in USA.

A different value proposition to AFL but it does demonstrate that the mega streamers will go into the Sports market.

Sky Sports has the UK rights and Willow TV (a specialist cricket streamer) has the US rights. Disney has the non TV rights for India with Star TV holding the TV rights

This year I have got Kayo to work reasonably. A wise person told me to update my Google Chrome and now it works without the spin of death. Picture quality is not as good as 7, but that is a small price for no Brian.

I just misread your last word as "brain". Doesn't change the meaning one bit.

Apologies if you thought I was having a dig at you Old Dee. I was actually trying to say that "no Brain" meant the same thing as "no Brian Taylor".

Oh I get it now. I am on 15 second delay these days. I might need to stretch that to 30.

On this point surely Kayo should have a setting that allows you to at least mute commentary from broadcasts while retaining the other sounds. In this digital age it shouldn't be difficult and would make watching matches so much more enjoyable.

Last year I was watching Celtic in the Scottish FA Cup final. For the first half the commentary feed failed but the crowd noise came through.

It was bliss

I watch via the app on my Apple TV.  Rarely an issue. If there is, its a router issue.

    CONSISTENCY by The Oracle

"I think we have got a team that can win a premiership, and if we get in this year, I don't think there is a team that is going to want to play us. This year is not a write-off, I don't concede that. Not at all." — Collingwood President Jeff Browne. I love this sort of optimism from the Magpie President after his club’s eleven goal defeat at the hands of the fast rising Hawks. It’s consistent with the fighting spirit of the club that won last year’s flag.  I only wish I could say the s

    FEARS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne’s worst fears about the absence of Max Gawn were realised when it received a shellacking from Fremantle’s ruckmen Sean Darcy and Luke Jackson who dominated the hit out tally in their game at Optus Stadium on Sunday by a massive 47 to 19. As a result, the 50-point deficit at the end of the game proved to be a loss that was long foreseen that was two years in the making and demonstrated a complete lack of hindsight and planning from the club. To add insult to injury, Jackson was a D

    RAIN CHECK by Whispering Jack

The Frankston Dolphins broke a run of six straight losses against their neighbours, the Casey Demons and kept their hopes for a long-awaited return to the VFL finals alive with a 27 point victory over at Kinetic Stadium. Casey was welcomed to the Peninsula by grey skies, heavy rain and angry seas with threatening white-capped waves whipped up by gale force winds. After a slow start in the opening term when they failed to take advantage of the breeze, it appeared that the Demons had decided
