PREGAME: Rd 07 vs North Melbourne

The Demons return to the MCG for their Round 7 clash against North Melbourne. Last years wooden spooners have been a lot more competitive this season under new coach Alastair Clarkson and will be looking to take a scalp. Who comes in and who goes out next week?

Out:

Hibberd (rested)
Hunter (rested)
Petty (rested/sore)

In:

Turner
Spargo/Laurie
Schache

We have to play as a squad on a short break. Petty looks like he can barely move at times.

Fresh legs and managing veterans are important.

I think think our coaches are open to resting and rotating players more so than we have done in recent seasons.

I don't think we can take Norf lightly but If May is carrying a niggle I'd rest him and give Disco a crack.

Similarly if vineys knee needs a rest Give Dunstan a run.

Same goes with Grundy. If he needs a freshen up after covering as a sole ruck, let Shaq a run along side Gawn.

Provides an opportunity to reward strong VFL form too

Did Rivers hurt his leg? Looked lame in his last horrible turnover kick then subbed off? Fritsch and Hibberd both had ice on their feet in the rooms post game too

Wouldn’t be surprised to see May “managed” with a sore calf, maybe Turner in.

Spargo will miss and I’m pretty sure we won’t see Brown or McDonald after the Casey loss.

Fresh legs needed. This was a grueling game and we have 5 days to recover.
If May is hurt, and he looks to either be sore or to have suddenly aged 10 years, he should have a week off.
BB needs to come in and Petty to go back. Larkey is a good match up for him.
And we don’t want McKay on JVR. BB needs to come in and take the heat off him and Fritta.
Spargo will come back if cleared. We need his pressure and kicking inside 50.

Heck, why don't we just bring in the Casey side then ?

you'd think there's going to have to be some changes given the five day turnaround

why is spargo out another week? i would've thought he was fine as he's past the 12 day protocol for concussion symptoms and he was back in the training mix during this week

(just saw the goodwin presser and he said spargo remains out for a further week)

may was very sore and rivers was subbed out; wouldn't surprise me if either missed

the other consideration is rotation of ruckmen - grundy has now played a lot more minutes probably than originally anticipated - and midfielders - i'd be keen to see someone other that sparrow given an opportunity

bowey was poor in the first half - wasn't on his pat malone - but second half was much approved, as was the entire team

OUT: may, grundy, rivers / sparrow
IN: harmes, schache, brown

laurie remains the sub, with petty returning to defence

You want to lose do you?
Petty doesn’t need a rest. If May is hurt he can have a week off and Turner can play.
North have a very solid forwardline. If we just [censored] this game in we will lose.

It’s going to be a tough game. Max and Lever will be better after coming off long breaks and Oliver was probably still a bit under the weather but got it done in the end.

I’d only look at bringing in BBB and move Petty back as Norf will try to stack talls.

Larkey is the main threat and is probably too agile for May… Petty is a better matchup

Gritty win.

Yes we're playing well below our best which is strange given our pre-season and pre-season form.

At least it's now however instead of leading into finals. Need to click eventually and a few individuals are well down.

Steven May. What's going on? Looks old, slow and as if he has zero confidence.

Oliver and petracca. If you want to claim best midfield duo mantle, you simply need to settle your heads before you dispose of the pill. Take more care. Do that and our forwardline will have a better chance of putting scoreboard pressure on.

Rivers was cramping only seconds before that awful turnover to Baker. Was subbed out not long later.

There were a lot of very sore boys from both teams in the last who could barely run. I'd be expecting several changes to rest some sore boys and reward some performances in the 2s with a short break coming up

I’d like to see the running numbers - I think there was a lot of total distance covered tonight.

The ball was zipping back and forth and the game really opened up in the 2nd half.

Bowey is the one for me. 11 uncontested possessions (no contested) and our defence is terrible defending ground balls.

This area has to improve.

Dunstan and Harmes should be included to give us some fresh legs. Pickett needs to move back into the midfield to find some footy. Ben Brown, despite kicking 0.4 needs to support JVR, draw the best defender and let JVR work his craft. Petty to go back if May is injured, and give Turner a shot. Schache is another option, and must have been close tonight

Intense game and a 5 day turnaround. If we've learned anything from last year we'll rotate and manage players.

May is not right. Give Disco Turner a spin. Would like to see BB play so Petty can go back.

Like this. Maybe reward Dunstan. Big test - North should like their chances

The five day break between games will influence selection this week, ahead of yet another interstate trip the week after.

Luke Dunstan, James Harmes and Daniel Turner are all in the mix for selection along with Josh Schache who was rested this week.

The first post match training session will determine which players get managed this week. We’re in the fortunate position of not only having the playing depth and being able to afford to use it but we don’t want to get too arrogant just because we’re up against North.

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
