Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Petracca’s goalkicking

Recommended Posts

Tracs kicking is easy to fix Fritta did it and look at him now so ok you say how, I would say Chocco help Fritta run directly over the mark and when he goes on an arc to kick his percentage is down, Trac always kicks on an arc which in turn makes you hook to ball because that is the way the leg is going, he just needs to go back to basics.

Unfortunately Trac’s goalkicking woes in 2023.
12-19 so far and 9 out of bounds on the full. 12 goals from 40 shots.
He looks devoid of confidence and more likely to kick goals from quick snaps than prepares set shots.
He missed 3 gettable goals v gws giants (amongst our 5/15 debacle and a bad 2 point loss). His return of 0.4 led commentators to call out his woes.  I’m fact inside forward 50 he seemingly now looks to handball off to teammates.
Trac is a legend. One of our greatest.  But he is a very very good footballer.  Not elite.  Elite comes with the responsibility to kick telling goals. To grabbing games and winning them. He did it in 21 GF.  He can do it.  I hope he works to ensure his goalkicking is an asset and not a liability.

I posted this in another thread.

Since 2022, Petracca has had 115 attempts on goal for 31 goals.

The bold is the total shots on goals. Top image is 2022, bottom is 2023. First number is total goals.

As mentioned in the game thread, he would be a very worthy Brownlow medallist IF he were to get his kicking right. Set shots and field kicking.
Question is how to fix it?  I am sure Mark Williams has tried but whatever it is it is not working.
Any serious suggestions?

It’s the only thing stopping him from being an absolute superstar and legend of the game.

He is a very very good player with a serious flaw.

If you saw him walking off the ground at half time, you could see how upset he was. He was visibly distraught.

At this point in his career there is absolutely no doubt in mind it is mental. All in his head.

This is a guy who kicked an impossible soccer goal in a grand final when everything was on the line. He is a NSM and one of the best players in the game.

He needs to seek help to get over the mental demons that are haunting him around goal, because nothing he does at training seems to be working when he’s out on the field.

Once clarry is back we should play Trac at full forward.
BUT we must clear out the forward 50 for him and let him win the game off his boot….even if he kicks 5.10

He’s a great mark, knows where to lead and will have the third oppo defender if brown and JVR play in the same team

His field kicking not “he’s”.

Instruct him not to kick around the corner.  Instruct him to line up the leg, ball and boot straight at the target.  JMac kicked like a backman until went forward and lined it all up.  The guys approach the goals like a dancer with an empty garter. So this applies to them all.

If he does not do that drop him until he agrees.  Take the  drop-off of hardball gets on the chin.

If he has been instructed to do so but is not doing so, we are screwed and there is always next year.  We know how that works.

Bloke needs to see a different sports psych. I know the club has one, but he needs external help. It is completely in his head. He also needs to get to work on his deficiencies. Like, seriously work on them. Tracc loves being a personality of the game, but right now he needs to look at fine tuning his skills, which may mean focusing solely on football. I am all for players having a life outside of football, but not when they are out of form to the degree he is. I will probably cop heat for this post, but his primary job is to play football. He has talent but knows he is not performing to the level he is capable of

Good point KITP and Your namesake Kossie would do well to do some some searching on his game and attitude ie flying for MOCentury and no hope of getting it. His job is to crumb and wait at the front mainly ( occasionally at back ) for opportunities to convert.

One of the best players the Dees have ever produced. But we can't put him into the Dusty category because his goal kicking is 2nd rate. When he kicks them they are usually blinders but running through 50 shooting at goal he is simply a poor shot at goal, and his set shots are average at best.

One cannot be too critical of Petracca - he does so much that no other player can offer - and he can do it right across a game. Regarding his goal kicking, he does 'over-use' fancy grips and drops of the ball that have affected his goaling approach and accuracy. Some are phenomenal. Most are catastrophic, at present. He is also required/expected to/depended upon (to) make good the shortfalls and unreliable efforts of almost every midfielder and forward in the whole team approach to going forward and scoring goals - particularly in the absence of his comrade in arms, Clayton Oliver. Frustrating management and implementation of his absolute class and skills - jumbled and disjointed. He initiates and springs eternal in nearly every forward push as a matter of 'instruction' from those ignoring similar skills in those players available for selection in the hope that he will hit every target and every potential opportunity across the team. It just ain't fair; and yet, none of us can imagine a better powerhouse - we just wish he was better utilised.

It's the reason why he isn't played forward more often.

He is a very good player and a big part of our recent flag.

His goal kicking issue hinders him from simply tearing games up.

Has been worse this year.

Guess you take the bad with the very good skills with a player like Trac.

His goal kicking accuracy is the only thing stopping him winning the Brownlow this year. He’s a brilliant footballer who has struggled with accuracy this past 1-2 seasons after a great year in 2021.  Even with the inaccuracy he’s a top 5 player in the game and a weapon around the ball. I’m not piling on like some here saying he cost us the game etc. if he didn’t have the game he did, then we wouldn’t have even had the shots on the first place. He’s not alone in his accuracy woes, but at least he’s contributing in other ways unlike a lot of his teammates.

The club needs to help him with the mental side of it. He’s clearly capable, just needs help. Not sure if that’s a sports psych or someone else.

3.12 and who knows how many complete misses from the Hawthorn game onwards. He started the season in reasonable fashion with 9.7 after round 7.

Hard to believe he once kicked 26.6 in one of his earlier seasons (2017).

Imagine the player he'd be if he went at 80% this year. He'd already have Charlie in his pocket in the absence of Oliver.

With that being said, I hope he plays more minutes up forward with Clarry back next week. Under the roof, he'll snag a couple next week from 4 or 5 opportunities.

As a club, I'll be horrified if we dish up another 7.18 / 6.19 type of score in perfect conditions next week.

His and our expectations are too high.

Some of those shots were not easy, they were 50/50's at best.

Unfortunately he's taking those on board when he gets the easy shots and it's effecting him.

Easy to say, hard to do but if he just took the Ted Lasso advice to be a goldfish his conversion rate would rise significantly.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
