I’m sure he’s pretty happy with the call now but from pure money and contract certainty perspective she was probably right at the time. He might be worse off in a financial way but now he’s a premiership player I doubt he cares much!

Certainly been a rollercoaster ride for BBB over the last 2 years! Sorry Caro, no amount of money could buy him the premiership medal and ecstasy he has now!

Is she wrong?

Financially it was probably the wrong call. 3 years 750 = 2.25.

Didn't reports have him signing for us on about 4 year 500?

Clearly he's gone to a much better footy situation and seems to be happy with the culture here where there was significant friction between Brown, his family and North towards the end. So financially he lost out but there's more to life than money.

North also moved on and nabbed Stephenson at a cheap price who fits their list build and will now get CCJ from the Tigers who fills the void left by Brown. Larkey goes to Brown's role. CCJ goes to Larkey's role. They are happy.

Hindsight makes fools of all of us. Not her biggest mistake by a all long way.

Not a Caro hater but she had a shocker grand final week. Kicked off with a nothing story about a club curfew and followed up by comparing the tanking saga to the Essendon drug saga. Not her finest work at all.

Professional sportspeople play to win the ultimate prize. Of course she was wrong. Journalists love to go off early and make ridiculous statements, more should be called out when incorrect.

There would be a very long list every week ET.

Wasn’t incorrect though. Brown is on far less than that deal he turned down. He is probably happier than he would be if he sign that deal with NM but still a lot less cash.

Great for us tho. $1.8m over 4 years I think it is. Bargain.

Yeah, I'm really not a Caro fan, to put it politely.  Your second paragraph could sum up any given week for her.  More often than  not all about stiring up the dregs of rumor and innuendo of the AFL.

Brown to the MFC was such a winner for both these parties in my eyes from day dot.  Wow, imagine picking up the leading goal scorer across the previous 4 seasons for practically nothing?  The way he was clunking them in the last 3 or 4 games, you can tell he's got his mojo back again.

Now I'm just salivating at the thought of BBB kicking multiple huge bags over the next few seasons on every other week when it's not Fritta, Weid, T Mac or Kossie that does the damage!!!

I think he does ok at MFC from a financial point of view as well ... we just added an extra year to what Norf had offered and smoothed out the money $$$

I imagine that Clarry, Trac, Gawn and many others could attract a bigger pay packet if they went to North, Carlton or just about any side bar the Pies right now.

The other side of the equation that North have lost out on is the presence of a highly skilled, knowlegable and quality human being, with a great footballers brain to foster the next generation of young players at their club.  The way he BBB was able to accept and adapt to a different role at the MFC within the space of half a season is testament to that.  Advantage MFC.

I agree. This is a profession for the players. This is not a past time or passion. He left $1 mln on the table? Yes, from an achievement point of view he's benefitted. No question.

Because its sports, the thinking seems to be it not a bad decision to give up 1 mln dollars over the most important 5 year period of your career for being part of a more successful firm/employer/enterprise?  I could understand 50k or 100k, but $1 mln when your potential total income over your career is likely to be at most $4-5?

Wouldn't have thought that about other profession. Anyway, glad hes in the red and the blue. Full preseason hell be ripping next year.

Have never seen the amount reported that MFC are paying just that it was less per annum than Norf. Where did you get $1.8m from out of curiosity?

Beautifully summed up, she is a great lover of opening up old wounds that have been closed long ago. As for the curfew, biggest non-story ever. Ask the players now if they could care less about being told to be professional for a 1 and half week period before the biggest game of their lives.

She tries, I think, a little too hard to be the policewoman for the AFL’s morals. She gets some right, but when she gets them wrong she looks like a real goose (not unlike many others in her industry).

I once rang 3AW before a match between Richmond and Melbourne spoke to Rex Hunt saying every team at the start of a year over rates their list and aim to win premierships and Caroline Wilson poo me for suggesting such a thing.

I have been in the MFC dressing room before game between the late 1960's and 1986 and found that optimism is always there between the training staff and players.

In 1981 when we won 1 match by a point the players were told by Barassi at the start of the season he believed they would go very well that season even though he told the Journalists that he had a 5 year plan.

What he did not know that during the season  injuries would wipe out more than 1/2 of the playing list.

But 2021 was a different animal and Brown and Co now have the reward and what ever was said in the past was an opinion peice from a paid journalist who like sensationalism.

After North offered him that contract they treated Ben very, very poorly. That’s worth a lot more than you can know - until you are free of that situation.

I make about half of what I was making a few years ago. I love what I do now. I’m happier, more focussed, and feel like I offer more than I did in my previous job. There’s no amount of money that could get me to go back to my previous job, because I was treated poorly.

Besides, my hips don’t have the flexibility to get back on the pole now anyways.

far less?? 2.1m over 3 years or 1.8m over 4 years. *Unlikely to get a 4th year you imagine

300K less and you go from a wooden spoon to at least one flag and multiple tv and advertising opportunities. I don’t know a player than would turn that down. The manager looked after his client very well and was clearly not one of the biggest mistakes of the year

Ben Brown is a smart cookie. He won't be relying on his footy earnings to survive once he hangs up the boots.

Many players turn down bigger offers to move so they can stay and enjoy premiership success. I highly doubt he regrets his decision to join the Dees.

The money from playing is fleeting.

The words 'Premiership Player 2021' on your record are etched forever...*

(*And open up greater opportunities for media and advertising.)

Yes she is extremely wrong.
it is about winning Flags

Ben will do very nicely from now on, could get another Flag before he retires.
Sets up many opportunities for later…

How much money has he the potential to make being a Melbourne Premiership player? Who knows and I doubt he would really try to squeeze every dollar out of it but he could make some serious cash in his current position.

That assumes Ben wanted to leave North, which I doubt early on in 2020 or definitely before that he didn’t want to. If he wanted to stay at North he turned down a contract that with time was more than fair.

He also joined Melbourne. Didn’t exact jump to Hawthorn post 2013 or Geelong post 2007.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
