Been a big supporter of the Weid and reckon he did just enough to hold his spot but I have to admit I was very worried after his first half nearly performance. He has to take more marks. Hopefully those 2 goals will give him the confidence and belief to kick on from here.

Any thoughts on Hunt to the wing and bringing in another half-back instead?

At the moment I'm not a fan of moving a player out of his set position.  But I think it is a matter of managing the risk.

I like that idea of Hunt to the wing, mainly because he has been running along side Langdon all year from the backline so he knows Langdon's positioning and moves and could more easily slot into the role than someone who hasn't played a game for a few weeks and not familiar/practiced in our ball movement from the back half.

Brisbane isn't brimming with small forwards so bringing in someone to replace Hunt in the back line is the lower risk option.  Less risky than replacing Langdon with someone not in the team.

I think Jones is too slow for the wing.  Could be a candidate for the Hunt role if he is moved.  Other candidates for Hunt role:  Lockhart, Sparrow, Bowey if they want to give him a taste of AFL.

Rivers to wing (safer than Hunt and he’s going to end up a midfielder anyway), Lockhart in to halfback.

I assume people realise we play a role based game its one in one out. Baker and Rosman play the wings at VFL. Baker was named MFC best player behind Caseys Munro in their last game with a 26 possession game on the wing. I would argue he got 70% of his possessions in the defensive half. It’s Langdon for Baker with Melksham on watch again for me.

I think you are right with Baker but I am very afraid!

I think that Weideman did not do enough to justify keeping BB out.

Rubbish.

Weid last night - 6 disposals, 5 marks, 1 tackle, 2.1 goals

Brown (at VFL level) - 4 disposals, 0 marks, 2 tackles, 0 shots at goal

We've waited so long to build a genuinely competitive culture and so many want to throw it out the window at first chance.

Interesting choice. On gut feel I like it. Does he have the tank?

@big_red_fire_enginemade the point about the team being based on roles and that Langdon’s replacement will come out of the wing role pool. It’s spot on but I disagree with his conclusion that it has to be someone from the VFL team. Brayshaw has said on the podcast that all players have a second role that they train and practice in, even if they don’t necessarily use it in AFL matches.

I wonder whose second role is “wing”? The pool of players available to replace Langdon are players currently in the side who are nominated as capable wingers, and the full time wingers in the VFL. We don’t know who is in the former group, but what I’m absolutely certain about is that they won’t play a player in there who hasn’t previously trained for it, which may exclude the likes of Rivers, but who knows?

I've been on record saying Ben Brown shouldn't have been dropped but Weid is so close, sure he only kicked 2 goals but he got both hands to the ball a bunch of times. won't be long and they'll stick for him and he'll kick a big bag.

we've gotta back him in because the signs are very good. unless Ben or Mitch Brown goes absolutely nuts in the 2's i reckon Weid gets the next 3 games at least

Weideman must either be completely unfit or just unwilling to defend.

I can live with him dropping the odd mark, but he doesn't make any effort to spread and pressure. The sight of him jogging around while others around him bust a gut, was killing me.

That said, he's probably a better option than both Browns but I hope he gets a kick in the backside and comes out with a bit of intensity next Friday.

Good call, would like to see Lockhart get a run, and love Rivers acceleration, it would be great going into forward half.

Interesting. I like it.
Bowey could also play halfback for a taste.
Rivers has pace and is a clever user of the footy. Does he have the tank to play wing tho?

Out: Weid, Langdon (if injured)
In: B.Brown, Baker

In some ways I'd like to keep Weid in to build his confidence, but at the same time it's important to drive standards, and Brown deserves a chance to build confidence in the 1s as well. Looking forward, Viney comes into this team but I have no idea at who's expense.

Id prefer Bb but Sam gets another game. The club cant just keep swapping them about .

Besides we did get a brief glimpse of Weids skill with thos two goals.

Hopefully he can build on that.

We won with a few players not at their best in Jackson, Kozzie, Hunt, Salem and even Langdon was a tad quiet.

Hopefully no injuries so ...no changes.

On a side note...so much focus has been on Trac as our superstar but for me its Oliver by a country mile.

The club clearly has their heart set on a Jackson Weideman double act. They brought in BB to replace Tmac. Then Tmac decided to go be a sensational player again and now the plans have gone to [censored].

Would be good to see him on the wing but I think hes just too valuable in his current role.

I’m a fan of Bowey too Jaded but I’d rather introduce him in the Collingwood game. Will be that extra ‘link player’ we are after but playing a first game in humid, slippery conditions may be a big ask.

The Rivers to wing idea is an interesting one. Concerns about his tank could be alleviated by rotating Hunt through there to give him a breather, and bringing in Bowey or Lockhart to fill the role in defence?

What are people's thoughts on managing Jordon through the season? He's been on limited minutes and even though he's been on the list a few years he's been going pretty hard for a first-year player.

I'd be tempted to leave him out versus Collingwood (in place of Viney) for a two week break. Just need to make sure he's fit and ready come finals time. After the bye, you'd have to leave out Melksham no matter how well he plays in the next two weeks.

On the Langdon issue, I would have said Baker (who's underrated around here), but really liking that Hunt idea. He was dangerous around goals in 2019 and the last part of 2020 and he knows the role.

In defence in his place Lockhart deserves his chance. We need to find out if he's suited to that small defender role for a future without Nev and Hibberd.

As a team that is top of the ladder with one loss absolutely no changes whatsoever except for injury.  Last night everyone did their job, even melksham fell over at the right time.

Give baker another chance.

HUGE loss.

Alex Neal Bullen has the running power to play the role, and Tom Sparrow could come in and play as a pressure half forward

Agree. N-B has the tank.

What about Bedford as an in? Pressure forward. Been really good in the 2s I believe.

Weideman stays. Jumped for lots of marks and just failed to clunk a few. Brought ball to ground Brown needs to show something before a call up.

Is Lockhart an option?

Been working in defence. He was BOG for Casey last week and a dead cert for selection soon,  but I'm not sure he matches our needs right now.

Edit: the suggestions that he takes the spot of either Rivers or Hunt so they can run the wing is one I could def get behind.

Weideman was rubbish for 90% of the match last night. He'll no doubt get offered another chance against the Lions, but another game like that and he's trade bait as far as I'm concerned. So tired of waiting for him to "break out". It's been years now FFS.

As for Langdon (and my doesn't it hurt to have him out for even just one week), somebody has to match his work rate and the only player who really could is our best gut-runner, Nibbler.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
