Wow BBB OUT....we really are getting tougher with selections. Last year he would have been in every week automatically. I felt he just wasnt timing his marking right at all.....but Weid can kinda do the same thing.

....dont really understand Milkshake back in....but what would i know.

Brown was pretty poor on Sunday I thought. All arms and legs going for marks, no pressure when the ball hit the deck, didn't impact the scoreboard. At least Weid has shown a willingness to tackle, I'm not sure Brown fits that well into our structure. Good backup though.

So Melk wasnt dropped last week he was the medical sub and after a stellar performance as the unused medical sub he is straight back into the seniors.

I guess I just dont see what others do in the Weid and accept it must be me. OK. I cant believe we have not yet allowed BBB a bit of a paddock and told everyone to get out of the square as we brought in an expert. Thats my flawed view.. Instead we have the Weid who "looks" dangerous. I got it wrong with Kozzie thinking he wouldnt work so ok maybe the Weid is the key. I just hope we are not going to bomb the goal square which I see creeping in. Helps no-one.

2 weeks ago? So you've been wrong for 2 weeks? So using this logic, if i say we should drop TMAC, and then he has two very mediocre 0-5 possession games. I would've been RIGHT and ahead of everyone by saying we should drop our best performing forward for a Weid & Brown forward line against Adelaide? Rightio Nostradamus

umm yes, you would be right in your hypothetical. Stating the obvious?

We mightve given Goody too much credit for the Melk dropping last week. It may have been only about weather. A dry Adelaide oval deck pr9bably has Goodwin thinking we need Melkshams class by foot more so than pressure. And we don't have much pressure on that high half forward role right now. Jones or Chandler? Laurie in a year? I think it's one area of recruitment or trade that we need to look into. A Harley Bennell at his peak would've been ideal there. There was a reason we all got excited about his potential there. And I don't think we've completely replaced that position yet. (Just to nitpick list management areas)

Strange selections

Hopefully there's some logic but for those thinking Weid is a better bet than Brown.... Nah

There's something more and I will leave it to each to paint with their own palette.

Melksham for Chandler?.... I'm lost

Pretty simple really. Weideman was playing better vfl footy than Brown and Brown was incorrectly promoted ahead of Weideman. They persisted with Brown for 3 weeks where he didn't impress and now he's dropped. What else do you need a hand with?

I thought BBB was signed up to be a distraction and headache for the other coaches. That freed up our other forwards to kick goals and it worked .

I wonder if Brown has ever been dropped.  He was doing OK imho. Melksham gets the nod. wow. This game has suddenly become more interesting.

Yeah I’m not sure what the reasoning is behind Melks selection but I have been thinking that for nearly 2.5 seasons now.

Any player that plays for us now needs to have BOTH skill and pressure.

But too much crystal balling going on is what I mean. Browns first game was passable. His following game against Sydney was decent. How do you know Weid comes in and makes a difference? Maybe we lose a few of Ben Browns big marks and goals. And maybe we lose to Sydney. My point being that you have to reward form, you can't just drop a player because you have an inkling that they may have a run of poor form. You could be wrong.

There’s no doubt Melksham brings more than Chandler did last week. But we can’t talk about selection pressure and players putting in at Casey and then bringing in Melksham when you’ve got multiple players in the VFL working their backside off for a chance to play.
What’s the motivation for Bedford for example to keep going when Melksham gets a week warming the bench and is then straight back into the side? What has he worked on while being a sub? Because he was obviously dropped for a reason.

We don’t know what the basis was for Melksham being left out in the first place. Everyone’s assumed it’s for this, that and the other behavioural type stuff, but it could have just been a horses for courses change. Perhaps with the different mix of talls, we thought we also needed a different mix of mediums and smalls; now that the tall mix is more like before, we put the medium-small mix back to how it was.

If that’s the case, the message to Bedford and whoever else is plugging away at Casey is that Goodwin and team will pick the team that suits whatever we’re trying to deliver, so make sure you’re putting your best foot forward.

We can only guess the reasoning, but if this change is mystifying in the context of your guess, then maybe the assumptions around why he was left out in the first place need revisiting.

Goody seems pretty close with Melksham so I feel he is favored, but he really needs to start performing as he is no where near what he was a n 2018.

You know we’re in a good place when the extent of our complaints and arguments over selection is whether Melks or Chandler should get the nod. Both borderline best 22.

I would have given Chandler another run but he showed very little against Carlton other than one no look handball that set up Spargo for a goal. He was pretty ordinary overall.

Last week I liked Chandler in for Melksham given we had two tall forwards with less skill at ground level than Jackson.

With Brown out and Jackson back, we effectively get a tall player who is very good  when the ball is on the deck. Chandler has less value. Melksham’s marking ability comes back into play with Brown out and Jackson not being a stay at home forward. I also didn’t think Melksham’s form was terrible before he was dropped. Chandler was far worse. Sparrow is showing promise, but isn’t a forward.

That’s about the only way I can see Melk back in.

Brown has not looked particularly fit, whereas I thought the Weid covered the ground well and looked in good condition. Let BB know he’s not an automatic selection, might get the best out of him.

We suddenly go from looking a bit tall and immobile to really flexible and better balanced.

We still don’t have the mix quite right but in an amazing position to keep tweaking before the hard road begins.

I think Weideman is a marginally better option than Brown at the moment and Tmac and Jackson are automatic selections. Weideman is a bit more mobile and offers more flexibility than Brown. And Fritsch will get a bit more space inside 50 without Brown. That said, it’s a long year and Brown will get more opportunities.

Melksham is our best kick inside 50 and our offensive play can still improve. We will be a better side if he can return to form. I like Chandler but I can’t complain with either change.

Sparrow will be sub to see his family.

yes I agree. but Brown's form wasn't better than Weideman's in the vfl so initially it didn't seem like a fair promotion. Nonetheless I was totally unimpressed with Browns first game that I felt that he deserved instant demotion. His dropped mark and a sloppy free kick in the forward 50m he gave away in the last quarter were momentum killers and he could've lost the game against better competition.  So I was calling for his demotion immediately. And just like all of these people saying 'oh you can't drop Chandler after 1 game' nonsense. Of course you can!

Weid deserves another week. I feel the same about Chandler but acknowledge you can’t get away with 4 touches in a Melbourne side sitting 9-0 at the moment.
I thought this was the week to try all 4 talls because Adelaide has a poor backline we can stretch. Perhaps we are giving Brown a rest ahead of a short break. He surely plays at Marvel next week to stretch the dogs.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
