You know, watching all these replays of the umpire contact, I have been thinking that whilst I don't condone any intentional agressive behaviour towards umpires, the umpires also need to get out of the face of players and out of their personal space a bit.  Thought the May incident was almost accidental and that the Carlton one was more just a natural almost instinctive reaction of someone intruding on another's personal space.  Really don't see why the umpires should have been as close to the players as they are in these instances.

nope, i disagree and curnow the senior should absolutely be suspended for a week :)

i notice often in the nrl, (when a player engages the referee) the referee will hold one arm out, palm up to indicate player is not to invade his space. they are quite insistent in this.

One thing that is really cheesing me off right now.  I was just watching the Geelong Collingwood game and listening to the commentators raving about what a great backline combination Howe and Dunn are.  What amazing discoveries they were by the Collingwood recruiters, who would have thought Dunn would turn out this good when Collingwood gave him a chance...  They make it sound as if they were recruited out of the bush leagues by the savvy Collingwood recruitment staff, not already established players who played a substantial amount of football with Melbourne.  How about acknowledging that Dunn was developed ad persisted with for years at Melbourne to become the defender he is today?

They also forget Dunn had an AA season with us. Dunn’s a veteran and retirement is near. We got Omac in his place who appears will be a great key defender for a decade or more to come. Plus we have Hibberd and Lever who will be around for a while and will provide far more value than Howe gave us. Collingwood are not going  to build a premiership side with those two. Good luck to them to have found a good superannuation club and still being serviceable but if the old won’t go away then the new won’t come.

It takes a bad start to the year and a loss to carlton to make them have a meltdown, not a systematic doping regime....

They still are debating their innocence on that board.

To be fair, we still have 'The Fat Lady Sings' thread here but it usually gets updated when one of that crew bobs up in the media.

We also have the odd 'we never tanked' post turn up but I think most of us now recognize that was a dark chapter in our club and that the blokes who came up with it were incompetents and self promoters of the highest order.

In some ways, I can see how the club are trying to put it behind them. Lindsay Tanner has mostly slapped down talk from the Sheedys of this world intimating that it was everyone's fault besides Bombers and Jimmy's.

However, I can see Essendon's fan base becoming as great a bugbear to their administration as Richmond's was through the 80's and 90's. They hounded Matty Knights out of his job to get Golden Boy in and will be more than vocal the second Woosha looks wobbly.

Just look at @daisycutter's post. How different is that from microwaving your membership?

I would not take that as a reason for him not to be captain, who else could captain them that  has not been convicted,  he is over rated as a player, the bombers played above themselves last year, I never rate heppel as a player. They have recruited very poorly, from the time they picked parish I always thought he was never going to be any good, I mean he was classed as a inside mid, he is too slim for that I can't see any tricks to his game, he does not get much of it his kicking is just average, he is weak lucky we have Jason Taylor because in the past we would have picked him, he is Cale Morton mark2, can anyone tell me his best weapon?

I think the big difference with the tanking thing is that it was pretty much encouraged within the rules at the time. Everyone knew we were terrible and everyone knew there was a certain/max number of games we could win. We all thought we'd be better off with an extra high draft pick too.

Apropos of nothing, Michael Hurley has laid 6 tackles in 8 games this year. Great AA defender.

Even Jack Watts, who has always been 'measured' against Hurley as they were taken in the same draft has had 23 tackles!

How can Dunn be a whole lot fitter without being a whole lot thinner than what he used to be?

Meanwhile Moore eyes the inevitable change sides.....

Rance on Brown, two of the biggest stagers in the league, intolerable sods the pair of them

Why doesn't anyone ever seem to call out Ben Brown for his staging for free kicks? Every week, he seems to run himself under the ball, but then flops forward, arms flailing, and the umps buy it. The tv will show a replay, and the commentators just sit there in silence. It was karma he missed those set shots at the end.

North are the biggest stagers in the competition, and what do you know, 33 free kicks yesterday...

watched North live a couple of weeks ago against Port.

Certainly the North supporters holler for a free kick to Brown every time he doesn't mark it. In the main they weren't given but I take your point.

He is a big unit and I think his style lends itself to the free kick. Luckily Oscar had his measure a few weeks ago.

Gee whiz, imagine playing Carlton without the Curnow brothers.  Not too worried about the Blues, but after last years two matches were way too close for comfort, not having those two will make Carlton much worse.

I assume by gear they are referring to the club's performance enhancing drugs and related paraphernalia (needles, swabs etc etc). I would too. It's clearly not working

Or perhaps gear is more old schools and just refers to some of Bombers products. If that is the case i wouldn't be burning it if i was them. They are going to need some mood enhancers this season.

This just proves AFL footballers aren’t too smart. After all the carry on last week with Hawkins you would think the "Don’t touch the umpire, there are consequences" message would have got through.

For the sake of the lower grades and kids level footy both Curnows and May should go for a week. It would reinforce the rule and show consistency by the tribunal. Having said that I think they will all get off..

You couldn't make this shite up could you??

Both have to go. Intentionally touching an ump, if Hawkins deserved a week then same must apply here.

I really like Brown as a player but this is spot on, did it against us a lot too.

Looking forward to next week, i dont think i can recall seeing so many 1 sided games? There are 7 of 9 games that are pretty much heavily favoured to one team, with the other very little chance of winning or even getting close.

Is our even competition suddenly starting to turn into the haves and the have nots......?

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
