best 22?

no such thing in modern football

and naming backs to interchange is great fun but obviously not how we play

if, say, this was best 22 for round 1:

B: Jetta - Frost - Lever
HB: Hunt - O Mac - Hibberd
C: Salem - Jones - Lewis
HF: Petracca - T Mac - Melksham
F: Hannan - Hogan - Garlett
Foll: Gawn - Oliver - Viney
I/C: Brayshaw - Tyson - Pedersen - ANB

it really equates to:

normative defenders: lever, o mac, frost, jetta
rebounding defenders: hunt, hibberd, jetta, frost, lever
roll-back options: lewis, salem, vince, jones, brayshaw
core mids: gawn, jones, viney, oliver, tyson, salem, lewis, anb, petracca, brayshaw
push up forwards who can move right up the ground and perhaps thru the middle: petracca, anb, hannan, maybe brayshaw?
defensive forward: melksham, garlett
normative forwards: hogan, t mac, garlett
relief ruck / rotation forward: pedo

the game is so fluid - part of what makes it so great to watch

I don't think Weidemann will make it. He just lacks something.

Too early to say IMO. Give him another two years. Next year will be interesting.

Firstly, what a joy is it to pencil a mock team-sheet with Lever at your disposal.

Hibberd     Tmac      Jetta

Frost          Lever        Hunt

Our starting back six as befitting our game-style: balanced but dynamic, hard at the ball, with aggressive rebound and the potential to be miserly. See ball, kill ball. Intercept/win the contest and go for broke.

Tmac in a simplified defensive role with reduced offensive responsibilities (ahem, restricted offensive authority).

He was good up front this year, especially in what we were missing in terms of leading forwards, but I get the sense it's either/or; when Tom is firing our A-plan is off and the rest of the front half isn't functioning. Also, he has a pretty poor turning-circle, and I don't think there's room for both he and Hogan in our intended pressurised set-up (with Pedo or Max thrown in as well).

Available to pinch-hit when our system isn't working/we want to change it up.

Not to forget: Tom was on AA track in the front half of 2015 in this role (until, admittedly, he was slaughtered by Cloke and lost his mojo), and he really was in fantastic form for spoils/intercept marks on the opposite number 1's. That was, until he took on the dual roles of both offensive and defensive marshal in the back-line.

Yet, he and Lever could form quite the formidable duo, with Jetta being Jetta, and Frost for support with less defensive responsibilities.

Frost ahead of Omac because he has greater weapons and adds an extra dynamic. Brayshaw (and Jones and Lewis) to rotate off HB with Salem shifted to a HFF (to take Watts' role? As Watts doesn't play tall, I'm not exactly sure he provides that Salem can't). Vince at Casey or forward of the ball. J. Smith our first back-up, and poor Wagner not to get a look-in. Sorry Josh.

The rest I don't care about/or selects itself on form.

Always a favourite for us dreamers - the Rd 1 side, selected four months out. As much chance of it coming up as ... Richmond winning the flag in 2017!

Now that we have got our man I thought I'd go for it. Note: I'm one who rates VDB because of his gruntwork and his scary tackling and, barring injury, I reckon he's a monte.

B: Jetta Frost Hibberd

HB: Jones Lever Hunt

C: Brayshaw Oliver Lewis

HF: VDB T.Mac Nibbler

F: Garlett Hogan Petracca

Ru: Gawn Tyson Viney

Int: Salem, Harmes, Melky, Vince

Emerg: O.Mac, Hannan, Maynard

My team not knowing the rest of Trade period.

B: Jetta OMac Hibberd

HB: Vince Lever Hunt

C: Brayshaw Oliver Lewis

HF: Hannan T.Mac Melk

F: Garlett Hogan Petracca

Ru: Gawn Jones Viney

Int: Salem, Pedo, ANB, Tyson

Emerg: Frost, VDB , Maynard

Cant see OMac not playing. Also Jones starts in the guts for me! And Vince Half back Tyson off the bench and Hannan in for VDB, Think VDB would need a few games at VFL level before coming back and Pedo for Harmes!

Vince could easily replace Salem, but see him not starting 22 at this stage. This excercise shows up one missing link - our forward line is still one player short of being able to trouble the best opposition defences. IF Weideman develops that will solve the issue. TMac goes back to defence and Frost moves to the bench or Casey.

This also troubles me Maldon, especially in view of showing Watts the door and seemingly not looking to recruit any forwards.

Weideman is the big question mark in this matter

Watts is better than about ten of the above players -that's why I'll be taking up yoga on weekends next year if we trade him.

Was about to post exactly this...without the yoga part. Weideman really needs to lift next year. Who are the precise deliverers into the forward line now that Watts is going? Salem, Lewis, Who else??

Naturally it will evolve through the preseason.

Jetta           OMac          Lever

Hunt            Frost           Hibberd

Brayshaw   Viney           Lewis

Petracca    Hogan         Melksham

Garlett        TMac           Neal-Bullen

Gawn          Oliver           Jones

Tyson     Salem     Harmes    Hannan

E: vandenBerg    Vince    Maynard

Balic will be a Dee.  His summer will be interesting.

I really like Joel Smith.  He's another watch.

We'll use 32-35 players, so plenty will get their turn to impress.

I don't want Gawn, McDonald, Hogan and Pedersen in the same team, so Pedersen reverts to depth.

I hope AVB gets a decent run of it, because I think he can provide value.

Bernie is just about cooked for mine.  But he'll be good for 10 or so games.

I really hope Billy puts his hand up and forces his way in.

Finally, I'm a real Brayshaw fan.  I reckon he can be a gun.  Let's hope the bad luck is behind him.  He's the sort of talent that could be the difference between 6-8 and top 4.

You'd have Lever at CHB?

Would that be not good RTG? I really still see TMac at CHB. Now with Lever the defense and rebound is top level modern football.  Tom can still also be that swingshift forward much like Harry Taylor, to switch it up, but nobody is too sure when.

No personal history at all.Jones has been a super player for us but he is selfish ,he turns the ball over too much,as does tyson

and when the game is on the line he does not communicate or stand up.

i am sick of him running round the back for a quick stat and then bombing the ball long to a contest

he needs to change the way he plays

may be a half back roll is right for him in his last couple of years.i would play Maynard in the  in the midfield rotation ahead of jones and tyson

my view

Nathan Jones will go down as one of the all time greats of our club.

Everyone has faults, but Jones has lived through the worst period of our history, and survived to lead our push to respect again.

Ok, he is not perfect, but damn he is a Dees champion.

To be honest, I'm not sure who I would play at CHB. Oscar? I think I'd be playing Lever on a flank as a third man up - his Adelaide role.

Playing positions in defense went out the window 10 years ago... It's a back 6 and players play on whoever the best match up is.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
