Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Balic might surprise.  He has more skill and more upside than Harmes and ANB.  I also agree with some that Vanders is a lock.

Frost on the wing?

I think he could potentially be good as a defensive forward, only to be used against teams that use a key back to spring-board their offence the likes of Rance, Hurley, McGovern etc. teams that use the more traditional smaller players then he'd be better down back. Given his height and speed, those guys who peel off and try to intercept mark or spoil would have to give him some respect, if he was told when they go up he's to run back Josh Jenkins style and try to get himself on his own 10 meters from goal.

I would never start him forward without a role like this, he's a better defender than forward, but as a defensive 'tagger' he might work.

You don't beat Rance by tagging him because that means he still dictates his movements & plays his game of going to the ball regardless of his man 'tagging' him.

You beat him by effectively playing through his man like Geeling did with Taylor or how our forwards have played ok on him previously or by effective short balls into the forward line or by quick crosses that shift the whole defense with a quick hit up to a lead.

Its all easier said than done & that's what makes them great defenders, but that is how you normally beat a dominant 3rd man defense up like those that have used Rance, McGovern & Lever.

I really think Lever will be huge for us for this very reason.

I actually think frosts best position is probably centre half back where he can use his run and attack. Oscar will be the full back and lever the third tall. Very solid set of attacking key defenders. Hibbered, Jetta and hunt is probably the three best medium/small defenders in the comp.

FB: Jetta - Frost - Lever

HB: Hunt - Oscar - Hibberd

C: Lewis - Viney - Gus

HF: ANB - Hogan - Trac

FF: Garlett - T-Mac - Pedo

R: Gawn - N.Jones - Oliver

I: Harmes - Melksham - Tyson - Salem

E: Vince - Hannan - Weideman

Next in line to come in with injuries: Maynard, Stretch, J.Smith, Vanders, Bugg

That's a pretty solid unit of 30.

Wow! The depth in our back line is outstanding!

I suspect the coaches will give Joel Smith a run at it early which would likely see O-Mac and Frost out.

I'd also rather see T-Mac play back, further complicating things.

I think Weideman's progression will be a huge factor to our ongoing success. If we could get 20 goals out of him this season, that would be huge. That forward line is the only area that causes immediate concern. A second dangerous tall is crucial to its success.

Exciting times!

No Tyson, no Neal-Bullen, who was top 5 for forward-line pressure in the AFL in 2017, plus you've included Pedersen instead of another runner when McDonald can pinch hit in the second ruck role.

Fair to say I don't like the team.

Looks good.

And you've overlooked Salem and not considered Balic.

Get rid if OMac, give it back to big brother at FB, Hogan cannot kick 50-60 metres so he's no CHF - so take him back to FFwd. Use Melksham as a CHF utility. Get Lever to CHB and Frosty to the HBFlk,

Fair call - you could well be right. However, exactly why I think we have a very bright future - we dont have so many auto top 22's.

1/ I would prefer TMac not to be used as 2nd ruck option - if he was to be moved it would be to go back into defense, then Pedo plays 2nd tall, or Pedo plays 3rd tall / ruck back up

2/ Tyson vs Vandenburg - I went the later for his extra height/weight up forward

3/ Harmes vs Neal Bullen - it was a real 50/50 and Id be happy to have either in the side

But fair calls on your behalf

Looking at the list I can see that we have good looking depth in most areas of the ground. Looking at the way the players on the list have presented coming back for preseason it would seem we are looking at a very mobile team. A number of the players look to have dropped a few kgs. and will be looking to get a lot of run in their legs. It will be interesting to see how the players and our game plans develop of the off season.

Here is my crack at the team for round 1.

B: JETTA, OMAC, LEVER

HB: HIBBERD, FROST, SALEM

C: PETRACCA, OLIVER, HUNT

HF: MELKSHAM, HOGAN, NEAL-BULLEN

F: GARLETT, TMAC, HANNAN

FOLL: GAWN, JONES, VINEY

IC: TYSON, BRAYSHAW, LEWIS, MAYNARD

EMG: STRETCH, HARMES, PEDERSEN KENT

In defence I will be interested to see the development in Omac and Frost over the off season we do need them to step up a notch. If one of them runs into a patch of bad form we will need to look at who slips back there. Keilty might get a run there or they could swing Pedersen back there. I think we are committed to keeping Tmac forward this next season.

This next season our midfield will really be a strength with some emerging A+ players and good developing depth. A lot of players in this team to rotate through there. Oliver, Jones, Viney and Tyson all pretty much pure mids. I would like to see Petracca spend a majority of his time in the middle this season. Rotating through there would be Hunt, Neal-Bullen, Salem, Garlett, Brayshaw, Lewis, Melksham  and Maynard. I did like it when I saw Hogan in the center at the bounce a few times.

In the forwards Hogan, Melksham, Neal-Bullen and Hannan to be allowed to roam far and wide. TMac to be at the pointy end of the attack with Garlett doing what he does best. in some cases I could see Pedersen in for Hannan or Melksham.

Of the others running around I will be interested to see how VdB comes back after last year with his injuries. I want to see Weideman bulk out a bit and start to impose himself a bit more. I like what I have seen so far. Want to see what we have with Balic, as I have not seen anything of him.

1. I'd far rather another runner than a another tall.  You're aware Richmond used Grigg as a second ruck in 2017 ?  Pedersen won't be played in addition to the incumbent talls.  Pedersen was reserves bound all year until Gawn and then Spencer went down.  He did a great job, but he won't be part of the 22 with a fit Gawn, Hogan and McDonald in the forward-line.

2. Tyson and vandenBerg are not competing for a position.  vandenBerg is competing with Harmes, Hannan and possibly Balic..

3. Harmes v Neal-Bullen is more like for like, but Neal-Bullen's pressure ensured 11th position in the B&F compared to Harmes 17.  I have both in my team, but certainly Neal-Bullen deserves to be picked first.  I wasn't a fan of his this time last year, but he walked the walk.

interesting that - judging from the very early reports - frost seems to be being trialled as a spare parts mid / ruck role, presumably a la blicavs?

i still tend to think he'll be best 22 for us, but it'll be interesting to see how we structure up; i always saw frost as returning to that running chb role that he played well when in form, but perhaps there's a surprise in store

B: Jetta - O Mac - Vince
HB: Hunt - Lever - Hibberd
C: Salem - Jones - Lewis
HF: Petracca - Hogan - Melksham
F: Pedersen - T Mac - Garlett
Foll: Gawn - Oliver - Viney
I/c: Tyson - Frost - Hannan - ANB
Emerg: Brayshaw - vandenBerg - Weideman

You can bet your bottom dollar that Vince will be in the team list come round 1.

Think you are missing the followers and put the interchange in the wrong spot.... Assuming Gawn Viney and Oliver??

Midfield speed and spread still  a major issue.

Overabundance of slow big bodied mids.

A bit of outside pace would be great, but Viney, Oliver, Petracca have above average speed.

Tyson is slow.  Jones OK.  Lewis won't spend as much time in the middle.

Brayshaw will be a big bodied mid and his pace is fine.

I agree that we need speed, but I don't see a plethora of slow big bodied mids.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
